Teac SL-D80 Nostalgia CD Player with AM/FM Radio, Silver Review

Teac SL-D80 Nostalgia CD Player with AM/FM Radio, Silver

My wife and I had been looking at under the counter, space-saver CD/radio units for some time, with mixed results. They're not found in stores except around the holidays, and we received one such unit as a gift.I don't mind telling you that the gift, a GPX, was possibly the worst piece of garbage ever.Neither the CD nor the radio on it worked out of the box.Further investigation of Amazon reviews found some troubling trends among better-name manufacturers: while the sound was OK on these under the counter units, the reliability looked spotty at best.

We decided that maybe a simple countertop CD/radio unit would be the best bet after all.But again, we found little satisfaction at retail outlets.Finding a compact player for under $100 that sounded nice turned out to be trickier than one might expect. With the cornucopia of electronic stuff out there today, you'd think we'd be tripping over nice combo units at every step, but no...The problem with the ones at our price point was either that they were "mini-systems" that took up too much room (and too often looked garish and geared toward adolscents), or the bass response was nonexistent, or if the bass was there the treble and midrange sounded boxy. There was just no winning.

Credit to my wife for a little Internet research of her own.She found the Teac SL-D80 and liked it based on its looks. But we couldn't find it in stores. What they carried was the D90 unit, which came at twice the price. We tracked one of those down, liked the sound, and took a chance on the D80 being comparable.

We were wrong. The D80 is actually superior to the D90 in several regards, not the least of which being price.I assume the D90 is being rolled out as the new model, so I would suggest getting the D80 sooner than later. The D90 had some minor changes to the CD loading mechanism and the tuner and volume knobs, none of which we thought an improvement. We actually hesitated to order the D80 because the D90 CD loader stuck on the in-store models. No such trouble here. The volume and tuning knobs are straightforward analog knobs, and the "upgrade" knobs seemed kind of goofy and hard to handle.

What really stands out with this unit, aside from its sleek retro styling that fits with mod decor as well as older style, is the great sound (for the money).Don't expect some fabulous sound system. What you get is a unit that has a very even balance of bass, midrange and treble, with enough volume for a kitchen or small room.I popped on a copy of Van Morrison's song "Moondance," because it has bass, piano, guitar, and vocals, and I figured that song would give me a decent picture of the Teac's range. Not only was the bass forceful without overpowering, the upper range was fully represented and not at all boxy.Beyond the natural sound reproduction, I even noted that the instruments were well spatialized. That is, the instruments all sounded crisp and distinct, and sounded as if they emanated from different spots in the room.

That's the kind of performance you really don't expect from a unit at this price. No, you won't rattle the windows with this Teac, and it's not going to sound like a thousand dollar system. But at the price, I most definitely recommend it, especially for a kitchen or den.And get it before it's phased out entirely.

Product Description:
Relive the era of sock hops and soda jerks with this classic Teac '50s-style stereo system. The SL-D80 combines a mid-20th-century aesthetic (witness the jukebox-like front panel and classic chrome highlights) with a modern touch (a top-loading CD player), letting listeners tap into their CD catalogues while fondly remembering when 45s were all the rage. The system also includes an analog AM/FM tuner with a rotary dial and a pair of integrated stereo speakers. It's the CD player that steals the show, however, as it not only plays your favorite tunes, but also offers 20-track programming and shuffle play functions, letting you create a custom soundtrack or mix up your selections depending on your mood.
Though the SL-D80 offers stereo sound, listeners can opt instead to connect a pair of headphones through the 3.5 mm headphone jack for private listening. And thanks to the built-in digital clock--which comes with its own alarm--listeners can wake up in the morning to either the radio or the CD player. Additional features include a sleep timer with 30-, 60-, and 90-minute settings; a rotary volume control; and a four-digit LED display. So whether you need a good tabletop stereo for listening in your basement bar or you're a nostalgia nut that needs a reliable CD system, the SL-D80's blend of classic and contemporary is an ideal choice.
The system measures 11.69 by 6.81 by 7.09 inches (W x H x D) and also comes in black, jade green, white, and red colors.
What's in the Box
SL-D80 stereo, user's manual.

Unfortunately I can't give this device less then one star.
My point - even $40 is way too much for this piece of junk that only can be used as a paperweight with some basic radio and electronic clock functions.
Yes, it looks really not that bad and clock/alarm functions are OK and I don't care that the clock display is somewhat too light in the night.
But the main problem of this "audio" system (the quotes are on purpose) is HOW IT SOUNDS!
The sound quality is not just bad - it's TERRIBLE!!! Period.
Since I have some background in electronics I clearly see that the analog amplifier of this device was designed by someone who has very little idea about sound at all. May be by some guy who spent most of his professional career disgning cheap $1 radios.
Horrible sound distortions (my guess - around 15%-20% at least),the noise level just kills your ears (my guess - the signal/noise ratio is not better then 30-32 dB), _very_ bad design of the power supply and filters for the analog subsystem - every time your iPod hard disk drive starts you hear all details of how it's starts spinning, etc...
My point of view is that probably iLive decided to save on few good quality parts and that lead to absolute failure. They probably saved few bucks but killed all good that was in this product.

From another point of view - this baby will wake you up for sure - you'll do anything you can to stop these terrible sounds in the morning. :-)

The bottom line - I don't think that I will ever buy anything from iLive.

PS. I tried 3 (three) different devices - all the same. Glad that got rid of it now.

A nice looking product, but form should follow function....and it doesn't perform that well. Clock is somewhat difficult to read...darker than any other led clocks I own. Also, the radio is difficult if not impossible to tune. Most of my favorites come in mixed with another.Alarm works well however. And for $10 what was I expecting?
So it went in the guest room.Let them complain.

With 20/20 vision in bright light, it is very difficult to read theswitches that switch between cd and radio. Two switches must be set correctly to switch between radio and cd. If you're only going to use it for one use, radio or cd then it's ok, but if you want both, do this test. Look at the unit in the store, imagine you're in bed in dim light and try to switch between cd and radio modes. If you can do it, buy it.

TEAC R2 Premium Edition AM/FM Mono Clock/Radio (Black) Review

TEAC R2 Premium Edition AM/FM Mono Clock/Radio
Average Reviews:

Frankly nobody seems to care that most alarm clocks are complete eyesores. Teac comes out with this wonderful effort, including a backup rechargeable battery. However there is one major problem that seems to be cropping up everywhere nowadays:

The LED display! This thing barely has any contrast, so you really can't see it well at night. Also, even at the dim setting, it is like a flashlight. Instead of using a nice LED display with simple brightness settings, you get this indistinct display that lights up your whole room.

Teac, please put an LED display on this thing. The styling is great. The button placement is fine. As is, unless you wear a night mask, I really can't recommend this clock radio.

Sony ICF-CD863V AM/FM/TV/Weather Clock Radio/CD Player Review

Sony ICF-CD863V AM/FM/TV/Weather Clock Radio/CD Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Was looking for a reasonably priced, good sounding CD clock radio to replace my old Sony cassette clock radio that had great fidelity. Overall, this unit was a disappointment especially for the price and the Sony name. Despite two front speakers and a rear "subwoofer", the sound is tinny and lacking in power. My old cassette unit, with only one 4" speaker sounds much better. Also, reception is weak. Only the closest, most powerful stations come in clearly. Others are full of static and you have to change the direction of the wire antennae for each; a nuisance. Another annoyance is the chirping noise made by the CD when changing tracks, especially long while it searches for a track in random play.

While very full featured, the controls are a bit awkward. Those on top are easy to use thanks to the tactile dots on the critical buttons. The ones on the front are hard to find by feel. Several are very small and awkwardly placed. The primary radio on/off and CD play buttons are flush with the face and almost impossible to find without looking. The display is large and easy to read, and has lots of information, though fades when not looking head-on.

I'm still using this though I continue to search for a better sounding unit with more thoughtful controls.

Seiko Clock - Seiko QHR008SLH Radio Controlled Get Up N Glow Bedside Alarm Clock

I will never buy another Seiko product again!!

First of all, the display was very dim, even when the backlight was on. Second, when lying in bed at night, I couldn't read the display with the backlight on unless I lifted the back of the clock and tilted it toward me. Finally, I found that the alarm was starting to go off an hour early. I thought I was going crazy because the clock and the alarm times were set properly. The clock then went off again at the correct time.

So, during the daytime on weekend day I set the clock alarm for a time in the near future and waited to see what happened. Lo and behold, the hour number displayed flickered from time to time to next hour. I set the alarm accordingly and sure enough the clock went off an hour early!! (The clock was only 3 months old at the time.)

The clock had a 1-year warrantee so I contacted Amazon and they washed their hands of the deal referring me to Princeton Watches who actually sold the clock. Princeton of course passed the buck to Seiko. I contacted Seiko and they told me that they would fix or repair it. However, I would have to find box to ship it in. They wouldn't pay for the box or the shipping. They told me that it would take 4 to 6 weeks to return it to me. I asked if they could send me a replacement first if I gave them a charge account number which they could debit. When they got my broken one, they would credit it. Seiko wouldn't do that.

It just wasn't worth the further bother to fix. So, I threw the clock in the garbage, a $45+ mistake. I bought a nice Timex clock locally for less than two thirds the price.

Tivoli Audio SongBook AM / FM Alarm Clock Travel Radio, Silver Review

Tivoli Audio SongBook AM / FM Alarm Clock Travel Radio, Silver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
With iPod auxiliary, premium speaker, and above average AM/FM reception, the Songbook is an attractive radio. I've had mine for 3 years. It locks on stations well. The speaker is not overwhelming in volume or bass but produces a warm sound. The speaker is not as rich as Tivoli's brother, the Model One, but the Songbook, perhaps because of its telescopic antenna, gets far better FM reception. One of the advantages of the silver color is that it is aluminum, not rubber like the other colors and the rubber radios hold dirt, which is not easy to clean.

If the Songbook is too pricey for you, you can get similar speaker sound and superior AM/FM reception from the similarly sized Sangean PR-D7 (3-inch mono speaker) or the Sangean PR-D5 (2.5-inch dual stereo speakers).

SharpTech SPC303 LCD Travel Alarm Clock with Folding Metal Case (Champagne) Review

SharpTech SPC303 LCD Travel Alarm Clock with Folding Metal Case

(More customer reviews)
I bought this alarm clock today (April 7, 2007) at Bed, Bath and Beyond for $10.I wish I had seen the reviews first.I bought it because of the product name, small size and variety of options.Unfortunately, I realized it wasn't a great buy when I brought it home...and spent a few hours trying to keep the battery in a certain position so the clock would stay on.The connections appear to be very sensitive and the battery doesn't stay in place.
The clock light is pointless. It's supposed to help you see the time in the dark, but unless you have the clock at a certain angle everything will appear blurry.Actually, the screen is blurry in most positionseven with the light off.
As for the alarm, it's pretty quiet. If you're a sound sleeper or live in a noisy environment, this is not the clock for you. You'll only hear the alarm if you sleep with it under your ear.
A final note on this product: The clock has been on for almost an hour without any problems...but only with the battery cover slightly open.If I close the cover all the way, the clock shuts off.If you want an alarm clock that will last awhile, I suggest buying something else. You get less than you pay for with this model.

iHome iP39 Kitchen Timer and Alarm Clock Radio Speaker System for iPhone/iPod (Silver) Review

iHome iP39 Kitchen Timer and Alarm Clock Radio Speaker System for iPhone/iPod
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have a small kitchen, and an old microwave with a dim, barely readable clock and single timer. In addition to my desire to replace the clock/timer, I had a set of speakers taking up valuable counter space, and was always searching for a safe place to set my iPhone where I could read recipes while cooking, but not risk knocking it over or splashing on it.

Enter the iHome Kitchen Timer. It's small - a lot smaller than it looks online - but not too small. Compact is really a better description. The retracting iPhone/iPod dock is great for extra space saving. I was able to replace a set of speakers, and get two timers and a clock, all with this one device. It sits neatly in the corner out of the way, but the iPhone is still usable when docked. The clock and timer is really easy to read, and it displays the date as well, or the audio source when playing. To set the time, I just docked my iPhone and hit the "clock sync" button on the iHome. Each timer has its own button for setting the desired time, and timer 1 is also a "quick minute" button which is very handy.

Sound quality is more than acceptable for a device of this type, and it can play from any of 3 sources: radio, iPhone/iPod, or "auxiliary" which means anything you plug into the input. I generally use the auxiliary input to stream music from an Airport Express without issues, although the iHome was rather picky about cables and it took 3 tries to find a speaker cable that didn't result in static while streaming music. A remote is also included to control iPod playback, but my kitchen is so small that I don't have any reason to use it so I can't comment on how functional it is.

This is really a handy little piece of equipment, and the sleek black and silver design blends right into my kitchen. My only real complaint so far, and it's not much of one, is that there doesn't seem to be a way to dim the display, although the default brightness seems fine with the lighting in my kitchen.

Pros: dual timers, easy to read clock, iPhone/iPod dock with speakers, space-saving design
Cons: no dimmer on the clock

As for device compatibility, my new iPhone 4 arrived this week, and it docks and works with the iHome iP39 without any issues or warnings about incompatible devices.

I've been long needing a new alarm clock/radio for my bedroom now and luck has it that SDI Tech just put out on the market something that I was looking for. The iHome is essentially an alarm clock radio with a docking station for the iPod. The unit is no bigger than a regular clock radio, measuring 9.2 in [234mm] width, 2.7in [69mm] height and 5.5in [141mm] depth so it can comfortably fit even on a small nightstand. Packaging contains the unit itself, instructions manual, removable docking station to fit the different kinds of iPods, back-up batteries for when power goes out [we all hate to see the flashing 12:00 when this happens], power adapter and an external radio antenna. No remote control though! You have to purchase it separately and it comes free if you buy one of their hard iPod cases for around $40 if I remember right. A smart marketing move, but deplorable. Just include the remote!

Sound quality is what to be expected of speakers of that size. SDI claims to be using an innovative "tunnel sound" system called Reason8 [resonate, how cool :/]. They're pretty loud at full blast but I was hoping they would offer a deeper, stronger sounding bass. I have a similar sized pair of computer desktop speakers that came with one of my old Hewlett Packard computers that offer better sounding bass. For those that don't listen to a lot of techno, I suppose it's no biggie. Reason8 does sound better than most other competitors out there tough, but doesn't quite touch Bose or Altec Lansing.

The iHome has some very cool features. Even without a docked iPod it can still offer quite good functionality: alarm clock, radio. On the back of the unit there is aline in on the back so you can connect pretty much any audio device and listen through the speakers. The Snooze button also adjusts the display brightness, offering 3 different settings. Also found on the back of the unit there is a small button for daylight savings time, sleep volume adjustment and clock set-up.

Dock an iPod and things get interesting. While charging it, you can listen to music directly through it, you can set it so it automatically shuts off at intervals ranging from 120 minutes to 60 to 30 to 15. As the timer approaches zero, volume slowly and subtly turns itself down.
You can set it so when it's time to wake up, you will be awaken to the sound of music coming from your little mp3 player.

Gripes:
Remote control not included. What gives? Smart marketing move, as I've mentioned above, but it would have been nice to have it included, given the unit's price.

Even on the lowest brightness setting I still find the unit too bright for my taste. The blue hue lights up my whole room. I sent an e-mail to SDI tech support inquiring about ways to make it dimmer, no response yet. If this is to be an alarm clock radio, why didn't they offer more than just 3 brightness settings? If nothing else, I think I'll find some translucent duct tape and put it over the front display, trying my best to make it blend with the design.

Buttons on the top have a different color than the front display. The front is a warm blue, the buttons are orange. I personally think from a design standpoint the unit would have looked more ballanced if it was in a single color.
Speaking of buttons, they seem rigid to the touch, giving off a loud click when pressed. The round turn buttons for volume and settings are a bit tricky to use. It may be just my unit but I found both to be sometimes unresponsive and when they finally do work, they are too touchy. I think it would have been a very nice feature if, for the price claimed on such a unit, the buttons would have been replaced with tactile wheels, just like the iPod.

Radio antenna cable has a plug that's actually in the middle of the cable itself. It would have been nice if the thing actually plugged in the very back of the unit, so if it wasn't needed [like in my case], one wouldn't have to worry about ducking away 3 inches of useless tangle.

Another nice feature would be the ability to select exactly what song on the iPod to wake up to. Presently, the thing just picks up where it left off playing the night before.

My Samsung cellphone is at fault for the following gripe, having spoiled me rotten. My phone has 3 settings for alarms: daily, Monday through Friday or Saturday and Sunday. Would be nice if the iHome had a similar feature, so if you go to bed late on a Friday and forget to turn off the alarm, you won't be awaken Saturday morning.

Final Thoughts:
I purchased this unit primarily because I wanted a system that allowed me to listen to my tunes as I read a book before going to sleep. I also needed a new, functional alarm clock. The SDI iHome paired these two needs into one nice option. I had $100 worth of gift certificates at Best Buy so I figured why not. If it wasn't for my abovementioned "overdue" needs, I probably would have waited. Wait and see what the competition comes out with. Wait for the price to go down a bit because as it stands right now, it's a bit high. If you end up purchasing it, rest assured that it's a nice gadget that will surely serve you well. Nice features, good sound quality, best suited to be used in a bedroom.

Product Description:
With its built-in docking station and clean, contemporary design, the iHome iH5 clock radio is the perfect complement for your Apple iPod digital music player. Not only does the iH5 let you listen to your iPod music free from cumbersome headphones, it lets you fall asleep or wake to music you've loaded into your iPod. You can also wake or sleep to FM/AM radio or wake to a traditional buzzer.
The compact unit measures roughly 9 x 3 x 6 inches (W x H x D) yet comes complete with stereo speakers, drift-free digital FM/AM radio tuning, a multifunction LCD with adjustable backlighting, and the ability to charge your docking iPod's battery right from its center seat. (The iH5 includes handy inserts to accommodate any type of docking iPod: 3G, 4G, iPod mini, or iPod photo.)
Immediately upon plugging it in, the clock will set itself, drawing on its factory-installed 100-year calendar (year/month/day, 2000 to 2099). The clock will maintain accuracy all on its own, even self-adjusting for daylight savings time and leap years.
Fall asleep to your favorite station or a carefully chosen iPod playlist using the unit's programmable sleep timer (15 to 120 minutes in 15-minute increments). Gradual Wake and Gradual Sleep features will increase (on wake-up) or decrease (on sleep) the system volume so as not to startle you. Adjustable sleep volume lets you select a comfortable "sleep" volume level without affecting the wake-to or listening volume levels.
A supplied analog audio interconnect affords hookups with non-docking iPods, other MP3 players, cassette players, or other audio devices. Other features include automatic frequency control (AFC) for enhanced FM reception, an amber backlight on all primary buttons, and optical knobs for precise volume/tuning.
For extra security, if you've selected iPod as your wake-to source and your iPod isn't docked, a buzzer will sound instead. The clock also comes with Sure Alarm battery backup--just install two AA batteries to activate the feature. In the event of a power failure, or if you disconnect the AC power cord to move it, the Sure Alarm system will maintain your clock and alarm setting for the life of the batteries, ensuring that the alarm will sound at the set time.
The iH5 is "Made for iPod"-certified by Apple.
What's in the Box

Okay... so I've only had this clock for a few days now, so I can't comment on how long it'll last, but so far this is the best CD alarm clock I've been able to find for under $50 bucks!

It was important for us to get a CD alarm clock as we like to wake up to nature sounds. My old Timex had nature sounds and they sounded terrible, not to mention you could hear the speaker click on a few seconds before the alarm would go off, just enough to startle you awake.

Anyways, here's what I like about this RCA model versus a few others I tried. It allows you to wake to a CD (ability to pick from multiple tracks), color changing choices for the LCD which on dim mode is great for not lighting up a room at night! It's easy to use, I found the directions simple and understandable, I also found the wheel easy to use and not a problem to grab. The unit does make slight noise when waking from CD, you hear the drive spinning up and a slight click on the speaker, but it's not enough to wake us up. It's pretty darn quiet. The sound quality is very good compared to others in this size. By no means is it a hi-fi system, but it sounds good for its size. It has speakers on both sides so you get stereo sound versus many of the mono speaks on other clocks. I also like the generally simple square shape of the clock, others are awkward or huge! I considered some of the Sony's but they were gigantic for a CD alarm clock. The snooze is fair and is adjustable. The Philips I had snoozed in 5 minute increments and could not be adjusted at all, not to mention the screen was way too bright even in dimmed mode.

The RCA does have a gradual wake up, but it only works on the buzzer. It takes about 40 seconds to reach full volume. I tried a Philips that had gradual wake as well, and it took about 15 seconds to reach full volume. Both too short of time in my opinion. Both started at a medium volume and rose to loud. Wish they'd start at zero volume and rise over 2-3 minutes. Since we're waking to CD's it really doesn't matter. As long as the CD motor and speaker noises don't wake us up before the sound starts playing. I customize my CD's to fade in over 5 minutes so gradual wake isn't super important to us, but it is a nice option to have. The graduake only works on the buzzer for this RCA. I also like that the RCA has battery backup and the alarm will still sound if the power is out.

The RCA only gets 4 stars because the graduake feature only works on the buzzer mode, and the buzzer is nasty. It'd also be nice if the LCD had the option of orange and red to choose from. You get red when the alarm goes off, but not as a stable color choice. Setting the alarm times takes awhile as the forward and back buttons control just that, there's no independent hour and minutes adjustment... so you may have to hold the buttons down for a while. It'd also be nice to see what CD track is playing at any time, versus just for a few seconds when the new track begins. The RCA doesn't have a date display so I guess I'm out of luck if I forget what day or year it is. Otherwise, it works, it sounds better than most small clocks, and the little screen is super cool with decent color choices and won't blind you at night in dim mode! But hey, it's an alarm clock! :p

Update May, 2008: The other one thing that is slightly annoying, is the viewing angle. Other than straight on, I would say if you go beyond 30 degrees to either side you can't read the display. So far the alarm clock hasn't failed us. :)

We bought this for a bathroom radio and works well for that.We wanted digital tuning with presets so we could switch between several stations easily. After we got it, we tried it as out alarm clock but it only lasted one night.

The first problem is the blue backlit LCD display. It only has two brightness setting and they are both way to bright for a bedroom. It could work as a bright night light, but I recommend you don't face it towards the bed.;-)

We blocked the light for the night because what we really liked was the digital volume control. We thought it would let us set the radio volume each night without guessing how loud it would be in the morning. So the next morning we were rudely blasted awake.Reading the manual I found out the volume is factory set to fairly loud then gets louder if you don't turn it off.So if that is the right volume for you, you're in luck.If you think it's too loud (like we did), then you're out of luck.

So we have a nice bathroom radio/CD player. But for us the alarm is no good.
