(More customer reviews)[After using this machine for two months, I've got to express some displeasure with the 21 tiny buttons on the face. Unless the unit is in a lighted area and in front of your face, count on some intensive sessions devoted to nothing but memorizing the uses and locations of the buttons--and be sure to rehearse those assignments every week.Even punching the right ones when you first awaken is no more of a picnic. For a company that seduced the public with the elegant simplicity of its first radios (we have 2 of them in the house), Tivoli appears to have had a newly licensed airline pilot run amok with the design for this one. They've succeeded in creating a sleek face panel without telling you it's the consumer's job to solve each of the "pimples" on the instrument's visage to get it to play right! I'd gladly settle for 2-3 big knobs to cover the volume, tuning and time set, along with two conspicuous protruding buttons for eject and on/off.Better yet: knock off a few dollars and make it available without the clock radio.]

Call it the Bosendorfer of clock radios or the Volkswagen of compact, one-piece audio systems, it works either way. And when I see the current cost of a Tivoli iPod radio (good sound providing you keep the volume backed down), the price of this model seems less extravagant. Even though Tivoli keeps throwing in new "performance" gimmicks, the primary appeal is still the audio quality. It's not "miraculous," and it won't cause true audiophiles to forget the days of building a system from the ground up, beginning with a four hundred dollar cartridge, but the sound quality is nonetheless unlikely to leave you wanting. It replaces a Model One, which had a bit too much bass (why anyone would want to add Tivoli's "sub-woofer" eludes my understanding) and too little treble (a ride cymbal has got to sizzle). This machine addresses the problem, since it has a bottom-firing speaker and a tone control, permitting you to tease more treble out of the speakers. Moreover, it solves the problem of getting only a single channel from your input source. Finally, this machine smokes my Tivoli iPal. Fuller, better defined bass, sizzling ride cymbals (I cheated on the tone control a bit), "true" piano tones, some power to spare (thus eliminating distortion problems), and beautifully balanced sound. If you've got a well-recorded CD, you won't find a system of comparable size and weight capable of realizing its potential as fully as this Tivoli.

The clock radio takes some practice--for example, to get the sound source and volume set just right, especially if you choose to nod off with a different sound source or to plug a pillow speaker in the headphone jack. I love the CD player, but it too requires gentle handling. It seems to balk at the slightest bit of moisture, or even fingerprints, on a disc, and it takes its time responding to the listener's commands. At one point I nearly returned the machine when it appeared to eat my CD, refusing to give it back. Going over the instructions, I noticed a single sentence directing the owner to unplug the machine for 60 seconds when such an event occurs. Problem solved, though it will recur, especially if you become impatient. Treat this instrument like you would a Steinway, not a player piano, and it should respond in kind.

It's a quality little unit, but it doesn't butter your toast--or even toast it, for that matter. Or perhaps, like setting the alarms and operating the CD player more efficiently, that's simply a maneuver I haven't mastered yet.(later) I've moved this out of the bedroom, permitting me to crank it up a bit and listen from 12 feet away.The unit sounds sweeter than ever (even if I'm occasionally questioning the how much and why of the clock radio).

(More customer reviews)I have owned a Tivoli Model One radio for about 1-1/2 years. It has been the model to compare to in its price range, praised for its sensitive, quiet tuner, balanced high quality sound and high quality wood cabinet. When I wanted a new radio for my office, I considered buying a 2nd one. I heard a Boston Receptor radio at a local dept store and thought it sounded better than the model one, but it was more expensive and had an alarm clock with many features that would go to waste in an office. I read reviews about the Cambridge 705 that, although favorable, ranked it below the Boston and the Tivoli in both sound and reception performance. When I found it at Amazon for 89.99 + 9.01 shipping I thought I'd take a chance and buy one.(I have owned other Cambridge products that always performed better that their price would indicate).I must disagree somewhat on the reviews I read about these radios. To my ears,at medium to high volumes, the Cambridge is superior in sound quality to both. It also plays very loud for its size, closer to the Bose Wave radio at a fraction of the cost. At lower volumes the Boston and Tivoli seem a bit warmer than the 705(but it still sounds fine). I will agree that the tuner is not as sensitive as the Tivolis but, this is noticeable only on the weakest of stations. The 705s rubber coated knobs are also superior to the Tivoli's somewhat slick controls. The 705 has a separate power button that glows green when "on" and amber when the sleep timer funtion is activated. Unlike the Tivoli, this allows you to leave the function switch in the preferred mode-a minor but useful advantage. The 705 has a tone control that the Tivoli doesn,t. It is mostly useful in turning down the treble that tends to vary greatly on FM stations. On a strong station it sounds best close to the max bass setting between 9 and 10 O'Clock. Besides its slightly better tuner, the main advantage of the Tivoli is its solid and very attractive wood cabinet(no matter what finish you choose.) The Boston has a more solid composite body than the 705, however the shiny onyx cabinet that houses the 705 is very well done and much more expensive looking than it appears in web photos . It does vibrate more than the others but this does not seem to affect the bass performance, which is quite impressive, especially at the higher volumes that the other units can't match. I intend to purchase another 705 to give as a Father's day present. Cambridge has these on sale until Father's day for 99.99 which I believe is the reason other distributors are offering it at reduced prices.(it was originally 119.99). If you are in the market for a good table radio you might want to grab one at this price.I was expecting a radio good enough for office use. What I recieved was a radio that I wouldn't hesitate using in my home. A solid 4 stars for the underdog.

This little radio is amazing and sounds great!The tuner is very sensitive and very well made. This is not like tuning a clock radio, not even close!The whole radio has a high quality feel to it.

The sound quality, although mono, it excellent for this radio. It's not Bose quality, but it's not Bose price either.It will fill a room with clean sound, just don't expect anything window-rattling.

My wife and I are big NPR listeners and we really enjoy this radio. And if you don't like listening to radio all the time, there is an auxiliary port to plug an MP3 player or some other external device.

A great device that you can only appreciate by buying it and seeing for yourself.I also have the Kloss Model One and I prefer this radio to it, but not by much. They are fairly close in performance

One reason I hesitated purchasing was because I planned to use this as a table radio more than a travel radio--the lack of external antenna jacks was a concern because I have trouble with AM reception in my area.The real surprise was the reception--this small radio locked on and pulled in signals that I have trouble pulling in with some of my better radios like the GE Superadio or Grundig Satellit 800--all while delivering a clear, clean signal.Admittedly, I'm not a DXer, and I'm not suggesting this is the radio for that purpose, but it's performance, particularily on AM, is impressive for such a small package.

Performance was great using the aux input on a Sirius tuner as well as MP3 and CD.

Overall, it has the look and feel--as well as performance--of a quality product.

One thing that you should be aware of--this model uses an outboard transformer--a relatively large wall wart.That negates some of the travel versatility, IMO, but isn't a problem for home use. (More customer reviews)With iPod auxiliary, premium speaker, and above average AM/FM reception, the Songbook is an attractive radio. I've had mine for 3 years. It locks on stations well. The speaker is not overwhelming in volume or bass but produces a warm sound. The speaker is not as rich as Tivoli's brother, the Model One, but the Songbook, perhaps because of its telescopic antenna, gets far better FM reception. One of the advantages of the silver color is that it is aluminum, not rubber like the other colors and the rubber radios hold dirt, which is not easy to clean.

If the Songbook is too pricey for you, you can get similar speaker sound and superior AM/FM reception from the similarly sized Sangean PR-D7 (3-inch mono speaker) or the Sangean PR-D5 (2.5-inch dual stereo speakers).

(More customer reviews)The new Tivoli Songbook is one sweet, versatile radio.I was reluctant to order it because it was brand new model and I couldn't find any reviews, but I'm glad I overcame my reluctance and purchased this radio.I consider it expensive for an AM/FM radio so I expect serious performance for the money--I was not disappointed.It's Tivoli, so I expected sound quality and Tivoli delivers.The sound isn't quite as full as the Model One, but it's more than adequate.For talk radio, it's simply the best sound I've heard from any radio.

One reason I hesitated purchasing was because I planned to use this as a table radio more than a travel radio--the lack of external antenna jacks was a concern because I have trouble with AM reception in my area.The real surprise was the reception--this small radio locked on and pulled in signals that I have trouble pulling in with some of my better radios like the GE Superadio or Grundig Satellit 800--all while delivering a clear, clean signal.Admittedly, I'm not a DXer, and I'm not suggesting this is the radio for that purpose, but it's performance, particularily on AM, is impressive for such a small package.

Performance was great using the aux input on a Sirius tuner as well as MP3 and CD.

Overall, it has the look and feel--as well as performance--of a quality product.

One thing that you should be aware of--this model uses an outboard transformer--a relatively large wall wart.That negates some of the travel versatility, IMO, but isn't a problem for home use. One of the smart design features is the wall hang slot on the back--I promptly mounted the thing over my nightstand and cleared off the space formerly eaten up by my cheap, tinny sounding clock radio.

It's a rare day that a product meets my expectations, much less exceeds them, but this is a great radio!

(More customer reviews)Several years ago I inherited a KLH 21--the inspiration for Henry Kloss' current Tivoli Model One.It is among my most cherished possessions, but sentiment aside--this radio is an advancement of the KLH "original" in nearly every aspect.

Audio tonal quality is much like "beauty"--it's in the eye (or ear) of the beholder.Considering the price and genre of this radio--I consider its audio fidelity to be exceptional--powerful and very pleasing.I prefer its design objective that incorporates ONE superior amp and speaker--opposed to TWO lesser channels for stereo.I've never been able to rationalize a "stereo" design where the speakers are separated by only eight-inches of face-plate!

FM RECEPTION:I own way more than my fair share of radios.Is this product on par with the classic $1500-dollar McIntosh MR-78?Not at all, but remember--Amazon is asking you for a mere $120 to own this radio.Within all reasonable considerations--FM performance is excellent.I suspect the criticism of FM reception you read here is due to a couple factors that are not the fault of this radio.First, NO GOOD FM TUNER can tell the difference between a weak distant station and all the "RF trash" generated within your environment by computers, "smart" appliances, and security systems.In fact, a superior tuner is MORE prone to such interference.Secondly, EVERY GOOD FM TUNER requires a good antenna--lose that included 12-inch "rat tail".I use a C Crane "FM Reflect" tuned wire dipole which terminates directly into the 75-ohm coaxial external antenna connector on this radio.FM sensitivity, selectivity, and capture ratio are very good.I routinely receive distant signals with good quality, and I have NEVER seen this radio overload from a strong local signal at a reasonable distance from its transmitter.

AM RECEPTION:My major criticism of this product is ironically my major accolade!Out of the box, this radio is unresponsive to all but the most powerful AM signals, and it IS NOT equally sensitive across the full 540-1700kHz band.This deficiency CAN be rectified with a $40 addition of the Terk "AM Advantage" inductively-coupled loop antenna.Set it atop or beside this radio, and the AM reception character changes dramatically.Maybe there is a "blessing" in this design--as there are NO "whistles", intermod, or overloading apparent on this radio's AM band reception!With the exception of a very few (and expensive) specialty receivers--the Model One provides the finest AM audio I have found in a mass-market radio.If your option for music lies on AM, you will be very pleased with this radio!

My favorite feature is the very smooth 5:1 geared ANALOG rotary tuning.It's generally accurate, and the wide bandspread and variable-intensity tuning light make it a joy to use.Analog tuning is technically superior in EVERY respect to today's commonplace "digital" tuning.Inconvenient?Maybe ever so slightly, but worth the minimal effort.

Sangean WR-2 Digital AM/FM Tabletop Radio, Walnut Review

(More customer reviews)This is a very appealing clock radio with digital readout that gives you name of song, artist, and other information as you listen. The mono aural speaker is warm and full. The radio is attractive, solid and well-built, evincing nothing cheap or plastic-laden. The AM is very good. Most FM stations come in strong. But hard-to-get FM stations like 89.3 from Pasadena (I live 40 miles away in Torrance) requires that I move the FM antenna, but this is not a big deal, just a nitpick.

Most listeners will love the WR-2. But if you're a radio buff like I am and enjoy the outstanding FM reception of the Grundig S350, the Kaito 1101 and 1103 models (called Degen in China), then I'm afraid the WR-2 will disappoint. To be fair to the WR-2, the more expensive Bose radio suffers the same problem of mediocre FM reception.

Another important point: Because this radio has a remote control, it works great in your computer office. You can keep the WR-2 six feet or so away from your computer and avoid interference as you toggle stations and volume with your remote.

Post Script: Make sure to turn on the external antenna switch in the back of the Sangean. It improves reception by tenfold.

Update: I bought a second WR-2 (in black) three years after the first and get excellent FM reception so apparently the radio has improved in newer models. New rating: 5 stars.

And unlike most tabletop radios, the WR-2 lets listeners adjust the treble and bass levels via the variable volume control. In its default mode, the rotary volume knob displays the volume level from 1 to 60. Tap it once, however, and it turns into a full-range treble control, and two taps creates a full-range bass control. Additional features include a clock with an alarm (radio or buzzer), an auxiliary input jack for connecting such devices as an iPod or MP3 player (both of which sound great through the speaker), a recording output jack, 10 memory presets that help you quickly find your favorite stations, and a full-featured infrared remote control.
A final bonus stems from the power backup function, which plays the radio for six minutes during a power failure (ideal for emergencies) and retains the memory preset and clock values for about an hour. The WR-2 measures roughly 9.5 by 4.5 by 6 inches (W x H x D) and weighs 5.5 pounds.

(More customer reviews)I purchased the unit for it's renowned tuner but also for a replacement of my clock radio. The tuner is everything as claimed and nearly as good as a very high end tuner I currently own. The sound quality is also much better than expected. Where this unit falls apart is with the sleep functions. I could not get the snooze function to work as the radio would never come back on. An email to Tivoli revealed that the snooze must be activated within 120 seconds or it simply turns the radio off. This information was NOT in the manual! I know I'm not counting down from 120 seconds the moment the alarm awakes me from a soind sleep... Poor design. I've also discovered that the clock runs from the single AA battery at all times. It should run from the AC and only rely on the battery for back up. Another poorly thought out design. The two most important sleep functions are an afterthought and in my opinion not worth the cost or questionable functionality. If one were to add a second speaker the total would be $250 or $100 more than a model Two. That $100 only gets you a cheap battery operated clock and useless snooze function. Instead, spend your money on the model Two, the $80 sub and a wall timer. That's what I'm doing... You'll have a better system and save a few dollars as well!
