Philips AJ300D Clock Radio with iPod/GoGear Dock Review

Once you get past the fact that Amazon has really misrepresented this item, I can say that it really is a what I needed. Yes, as mentioned by another reviewer, there is NO CD player funtion at all. It would have been fantastic if Philips had designed it with one in mind, but I think it would have killed it's compact size which is why I bought it.There are only 5 presets (not 20 as per Amazon's description and the unit only plays FM, no AM). This is mentioned in the "Technical Details" of the description page, if you click on it. The detail that there is no CD funtion is there, too - very contradictory.
I love the fact that it's small (I can move it from room to room). There are three wake-up modes (FM radio, gentle wake buzzer, and iPod dock). But, the best item would have to be the wOOx technology for powerful bass, on the back of the unit. That sold me on this "Play and Charge" unit, and I love that feature the most. The sound is excellent for the price. You can still connect a portable CD player, VCR or even an iPod Shuffle, through the AUX port and cord supplied. So, it's not a one trick pony.
The clock function is good, with 3 brightness settings (Bright, Low and OFF), and both Sleep and Snooze funtions on the alarm.I found it simple to set the clock and alarm(s).No battery back-up is a negative.Even a simple 9V would be enough to keep presets and radio function if the power went out.
Overall: I like it, I really do.

About 90 days after purchase my iH9 began to fail. First the lights on the display started to flicker, then the radio tuner stopped working. Now nothing works. The warranty is only 90 days, so I have no recourse. Stay away from this product!!!

We bought this alarm clock because I like to listen to music while I am upstairs (just bedrooms) and I don't want to have a separate stereo in already tight quarters. The design looks simple, much better than my old alarm clock. After a brief glance at the instructions, we had it up and running. We used it with both my old 20gb click wheel iPod and my daughter's newer 40gb iPod video. Both worked great. Here is what we think:

Pros:

-Dual Alarm
-Battery Backup (comes with batteries)
-Sets the time itself
-Looks nice, clean design
-Charges my iPod so it is always ready
-8 FM 4 AM preset stations
-Remote with battery included
-Adjustable brightness
-Sound quality is nice for a product like this
-Slide a switch for Daylight Savings!

Cons:

-You have to wake to iPod (or buzzer if no iPod is docked) for first alarm, radio for second alarm
-Control by remote has a little lag time
-iPod cannot be in a case or skin to be docked...I wanted to get this for my daughter, but I know she will not pull hers out of the skin to dock it every day and I told her she has to use the case to protect the video screen.(My iPod skin is older and the bottom folds out of the way so mine works.)
-When you turn on the iPod, you can only play what is already selected...a playlist, CD, or just all your songs...you can't pick and choose, but you can skip forward or back in order.

Overall I like this clock a lot and would recomend it as a way to have music when you want it in a bedroom!

iHome iH26 Portable Travel Alarm Clock for iPod (Black) Review

iHome iH26 Portable Travel Alarm Clock for iPod

This is a fun little device - the perfect size with plenty of features. It fits on my nightstand in place of your typical alarm clock, not taking up any extra room.It easily packs up to go on the road with you.It has custom adapters included for every size of docking iPod, as well as a connector for non-docking iPods.Great sound, great control of sleep vs. wake volumes, and a nice dimming feature with 4 settings to it, so that the light of the clock doesn't keep you awake. And if you forget to dock your iPod, the buzzer alarm will still sound (actually it's a beeping alarm).

If you are a heavy sleeper, or like 90 minutes of sleep music in addition to your wake music, I recommend putting your iPod on shuffle all songs before docking it on this station so that you won't get to the end of your playlist and run out of music.

I only have two complaints about the iHome 2 Go travel alarm clock. One is that my clock seems to gain a few minutes every day, so it ends up being very fast.I reset the time once a week. The other is that I have to remove my iSkin to dock my iPod.I was sure when I bought the skin that it said I wouldn't have to remove it to dock the iPod, but because of how the docking works on this station, I do.

The sleep timer function is programmable for a 90, 60, 30, or 15-minute countdown, and even features an adjustable sleep volume that lets you select a comfortable sleep volume level without affecting the wake-to or listening volume levels. The iH26B also comes with a remote control (battery included) that lets you control all its major functions from a convenient distance.
The iHome iH26B uses two stereo neodymium micro driver speakers to provide clear sound across all volume levels. This alarm clock includes extra convenience features such as the ability to store your shuffle's USB cap while your iPod is docked, and a sure-alarm battery backup (battery included) that maintains your clock settings and ensures the alarm wake-up time in case of a power failure. I just got this and it works very well.I first bought the Eton Sound 50 Speaker Dock, which had a great sound, but the problem with it was that it was too loud for the office.I finally decided to get this one and having used both now, I can say this is the better system, for the office. The reason is that this system is much quieter than the Eton system.I haven't tested its highs yet, but it's lows are low enough that I can play any type of music I want. With my old system, I was only able to play solo piano music.

The only aspect to this system I do not like as compared with the Eton speakers is the functionality of the remote. With the Eton system I was able to control the iPod completely with my remote so that I could scroll through menus and select songs. With this sytem, the remote only allows you to skip to the next/previous song and not through the menus. It's a definite drawback if you plan to put the dock further than arms' reach away.

SDI iHome iP99BR - Clock radio with iPhone / iPod cradle Review

SDI iHome iP99BR - Clock radio with iPhone / iPod cradle

(More customer reviews)
With the "Logitech® Pure-Fi Dream" now an aborted project (a Logitech sales rep told me, point blank; no chance), and the ExtremeMac "Luna X2" getting pushed back AGAIN and AGAIN, iPhone and Touch users are finding it pretty difficult to track down a compatable alarm clock.

I bought an IH9 from iHome, and tried it out for a few weeks. A great unit, with one deal-breaking exception. Humming at low volumes!! I tried turning off the Wi-Fi...., lowering the backlight... but I still had this annoying hum. When the device is 3 feet from your pillow, and you use it for going to sleep, this flaw is unforgivable.

Returned the unit, and just received my iP99BR direct from iHome.

Well, I love it. The design is slightly less sexified than the IH9, but the sound seems slightly bolder. The remote is larger, and feels weighted; a comfortable fit. One disadvantage of the design is that the display is straight-on, whereas the IH9 seemed tilted up slightly, which gave a better visibility. Not really a major complaint.

The key difference is that the iP99BR appears to have corrected the horrid humming sound at low (and all) volumes that plagued the IH9. I suppose they shielded the speakers correctly, but in any case, my only real complaint has been resolved.

The bottom line is, for iPhone and Touch owners, the iP99BR is the only game in town.... certainly at this price-point.

I won't bother to go over the feature set. Just look at the product description and reviews for the IH9. They share identical features, which are legion, and are great.

First of all, a word for those who have the latest gen iPods...

You will not be able to charge them on this clock without some sort of adapter (which will be an extra 25 bucks or so). It is not the fault of the manufacturers, it is Apple's - who in their infinite wisdom decided to change how the electrical innards work. Adapters can be purchased to remedy this, and so now I can charge my 2G iPod touch and play music at the same time. This clock has been in the market for at least 2 years. The manufacturer had no way of knowing Apple would make their product not work with the clock.

NOW that that's out of the way - the clock is adorable. The speakers are very good, and it does what it's supposed to do. I have a small night stand, so this fits perfectly. With that said, I do have some gripes -

Due to the flat surface of the buttons, it is very hard to figure out what you're actually pushing when lying down in the dark next to the clock. You can not see what you're pushing unless you're looking straight at the buttons. The alarm has a tendency to get louder and continue to get louder, and there's no way to actually prevent this from happening. Also, the clock's display is bright even on the lowest setting. I have it turned away from me when I sleep.

Overall, it's a nice clock and the latter doesn't really bother me that much (and it was also a gift from my boyfriend). If you have a pre September 2008 iPod, this will play and charge it. If you have a new iPod, you're gonna have to look into buying a 25 dollar adapter to charge it. Whether or not it's worth it is totally up to you. :)

This is a mostly very well thought out clock radio.I list below my LIKES and DISLIKES, so that you can more easily determine if this would be a good purchase for you:

LIKES:

* It charges your Ipod

* The alarm can be set to wake you up to your Ipod music (you create a Playlist on your Ipod called "iHome" with whatever song(s) you want; then when setting the alarm, you choose the option to wake to playlist)

* The alarm is a gradual alarm.Whether you choose to wake to a buzzer, iPod, radio, etc., the sound of the alarm starts gradually, before it comes on too loud. This is a nicer way to wake up, I think

* The digital display is very bright on its brightest setting. This can be useful as a nightlight in your room. However, if the radio is close to your bed, the brightness can easily be adjusted lower by pressing the "snooze" button until you find your desired brightness

* The sound quality is fine.Obviously, it cannot match full-size speakers, and for the price, it is not going to be quite as solid as similar sized radios which cost twice as much (or more). But, for this attractive price, the sound quality is fine, acceptable, etc.!

* It can be programmed to only way on the 5 weekdays, 2 weekend days or all 7 days.Although, as noted below, this may not be working correctly, or maybe I am missing a setting

* The price is very competitive for the features you receive on this radio

DISLIKES:

* Setting the alarm requires spinning a wheel-like dial.If you set different times regularly, and especially if those different times are far apart from each other, spinning the dial can be troublesome.

* Even though you are supposed to be able to set it for "5 days" (meaning it should only wake you M-F), I cannot seem to make that work properly. So, I work around this by telling it to wake me all 7 days, and on the weekends when my wake up schedule is different, I simply change the wake up time.

SUMMARY:

The LIKES greatly outweight the DISLIKES.This is a great iPod clock radio.

Be warned, this product only has a 90 day warranty. After owning this product for only five months it began producing an overwhelmingly loud hissing noise that could not be remedied. Thinking I had a year warranty like most modern products, the iHome company quickly informed me of my expired 90 day policy. Now I have a defunct product not even six months old, complete waste of money.

iHome iH5 Clock Radio and Speaker System for iPod (White) Review

iHome iH5 Clock Radio and Speaker System for iPod
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been long needing a new alarm clock/radio for my bedroom now and luck has it that SDI Tech just put out on the market something that I was looking for. The iHome is essentially an alarm clock radio with a docking station for the iPod. The unit is no bigger than a regular clock radio, measuring 9.2 in [234mm] width, 2.7in [69mm] height and 5.5in [141mm] depth so it can comfortably fit even on a small nightstand. Packaging contains the unit itself, instructions manual, removable docking station to fit the different kinds of iPods, back-up batteries for when power goes out [we all hate to see the flashing 12:00 when this happens], power adapter and an external radio antenna. No remote control though! You have to purchase it separately and it comes free if you buy one of their hard iPod cases for around $40 if I remember right. A smart marketing move, but deplorable. Just include the remote!

Sound quality is what to be expected of speakers of that size. SDI claims to be using an innovative "tunnel sound" system called Reason8 [resonate, how cool :/]. They're pretty loud at full blast but I was hoping they would offer a deeper, stronger sounding bass. I have a similar sized pair of computer desktop speakers that came with one of my old Hewlett Packard computers that offer better sounding bass. For those that don't listen to a lot of techno, I suppose it's no biggie. Reason8 does sound better than most other competitors out there tough, but doesn't quite touch Bose or Altec Lansing.

The iHome has some very cool features. Even without a docked iPod it can still offer quite good functionality: alarm clock, radio. On the back of the unit there is aline in on the back so you can connect pretty much any audio device and listen through the speakers. The Snooze button also adjusts the display brightness, offering 3 different settings. Also found on the back of the unit there is a small button for daylight savings time, sleep volume adjustment and clock set-up.

Dock an iPod and things get interesting. While charging it, you can listen to music directly through it, you can set it so it automatically shuts off at intervals ranging from 120 minutes to 60 to 30 to 15. As the timer approaches zero, volume slowly and subtly turns itself down.
You can set it so when it's time to wake up, you will be awaken to the sound of music coming from your little mp3 player.

Gripes:
Remote control not included. What gives? Smart marketing move, as I've mentioned above, but it would have been nice to have it included, given the unit's price.

Even on the lowest brightness setting I still find the unit too bright for my taste. The blue hue lights up my whole room. I sent an e-mail to SDI tech support inquiring about ways to make it dimmer, no response yet. If this is to be an alarm clock radio, why didn't they offer more than just 3 brightness settings? If nothing else, I think I'll find some translucent duct tape and put it over the front display, trying my best to make it blend with the design.

Buttons on the top have a different color than the front display. The front is a warm blue, the buttons are orange. I personally think from a design standpoint the unit would have looked more ballanced if it was in a single color.
Speaking of buttons, they seem rigid to the touch, giving off a loud click when pressed. The round turn buttons for volume and settings are a bit tricky to use. It may be just my unit but I found both to be sometimes unresponsive and when they finally do work, they are too touchy. I think it would have been a very nice feature if, for the price claimed on such a unit, the buttons would have been replaced with tactile wheels, just like the iPod.

Radio antenna cable has a plug that's actually in the middle of the cable itself. It would have been nice if the thing actually plugged in the very back of the unit, so if it wasn't needed [like in my case], one wouldn't have to worry about ducking away 3 inches of useless tangle.

Another nice feature would be the ability to select exactly what song on the iPod to wake up to. Presently, the thing just picks up where it left off playing the night before.

My Samsung cellphone is at fault for the following gripe, having spoiled me rotten. My phone has 3 settings for alarms: daily, Monday through Friday or Saturday and Sunday. Would be nice if the iHome had a similar feature, so if you go to bed late on a Friday and forget to turn off the alarm, you won't be awaken Saturday morning.

Final Thoughts:
I purchased this unit primarily because I wanted a system that allowed me to listen to my tunes as I read a book before going to sleep. I also needed a new, functional alarm clock. The SDI iHome paired these two needs into one nice option. I had $100 worth of gift certificates at Best Buy so I figured why not. If it wasn't for my abovementioned "overdue" needs, I probably would have waited. Wait and see what the competition comes out with. Wait for the price to go down a bit because as it stands right now, it's a bit high. If you end up purchasing it, rest assured that it's a nice gadget that will surely serve you well. Nice features, good sound quality, best suited to be used in a bedroom.

Product Description:
With its built-in docking station and clean, contemporary design, the iHome iH5 clock radio is the perfect complement for your Apple iPod digital music player. Not only does the iH5 let you listen to your iPod music free from cumbersome headphones, it lets you fall asleep or wake to music you've loaded into your iPod. You can also wake or sleep to FM/AM radio or wake to a traditional buzzer.
The compact unit measures roughly 9 x 3 x 6 inches (W x H x D) yet comes complete with stereo speakers, drift-free digital FM/AM radio tuning, a multifunction LCD with adjustable backlighting, and the ability to charge your docking iPod's battery right from its center seat. (The iH5 includes handy inserts to accommodate any type of docking iPod: 3G, 4G, iPod mini, or iPod photo.)
Immediately upon plugging it in, the clock will set itself, drawing on its factory-installed 100-year calendar (year/month/day, 2000 to 2099). The clock will maintain accuracy all on its own, even self-adjusting for daylight savings time and leap years.
Fall asleep to your favorite station or a carefully chosen iPod playlist using the unit's programmable sleep timer (15 to 120 minutes in 15-minute increments). Gradual Wake and Gradual Sleep features will increase (on wake-up) or decrease (on sleep) the system volume so as not to startle you. Adjustable sleep volume lets you select a comfortable "sleep" volume level without affecting the wake-to or listening volume levels.
A supplied analog audio interconnect affords hookups with non-docking iPods, other MP3 players, cassette players, or other audio devices. Other features include automatic frequency control (AFC) for enhanced FM reception, an amber backlight on all primary buttons, and optical knobs for precise volume/tuning.
For extra security, if you've selected iPod as your wake-to source and your iPod isn't docked, a buzzer will sound instead. The clock also comes with Sure Alarm battery backup--just install two AA batteries to activate the feature. In the event of a power failure, or if you disconnect the AC power cord to move it, the Sure Alarm system will maintain your clock and alarm setting for the life of the batteries, ensuring that the alarm will sound at the set time.

iHome iH5 Clock Radio and Speaker System for iPod

I bought the iHome after recieving a Black Video iPod for Christmas, thinking it would be the perfect companion to my new toy.I have had a number of alarm clocks in the past including many CD alarm clocks, and the important thing for me was (1) that I could choose the song to wake to, and (2) absolute reliability of the alarm. On those two counts, the iHome is a champ.Simply cue up your iPod to the song you want to wake up to, hit pause, and it will start right in when the alarm hits. And if power should be lost, the iPod unseated, or if you forget to plug in the iPod, no problem. It switches to a "beep" alarm which is loud enough to wake you, but not so obnoxious that you wind up in a bad mood all day.Sound quality is SUPERIOR. And the controls are pretty obvious, and nicely lit with a gentle red glow for night useage.

However, there are a few gotchas with this product that probably will mean I will be going back to my old CD alarm clock.First, the LCD display has no "lights off" feature. For some, this will be nice as it means the display is visible even in pitch blackness. But I have a sensitivity to light that sometimes makes it hard to sleep if there is too much of it.Even the lowest light setting (there are three) is sometimes too much for me.Second, there is not a whole lot of iPod integration as far as controls go.You can turn on the iPod, wake to it, and turn it off. That's it.If you want to change the song, you will want to pick it up OUT of the iHome, change the settings on the wheel, and then plug it back in.Not a bigee, but a step down from the integration that most iPod accessories have.Third, this is NOT a "portable" solution. If you travel, this unit will be too big and bulky to bring along.

Overall, a good product which I recommend if the gotchas do not worry you.But neither of these are mentioned anywhere on the packaging or any of the reviews I have read.Buyer beware... and then enjoy!

Product Description:
With its built-in docking station and clean, contemporary design, the iHome iH5 clock radio is the perfect complement for your Apple iPod digital music player. Not only does the iH5 let you listen to your iPod music free from cumbersome headphones, it also lets you fall asleep or wake to music you've loaded into your iPod.
(The iH5 includes handy inserts to accommodate any type of docking iPod: gen 3, gen 4, iPod mini, or iPod photo.)
Immediately upon plugging it in and the clock will set itself, drawing on its factory-installed 100-year calendar (year/month/day, 2000 to 2099). The clock will maintain accuracy all on its own, even self-adjusting for Daylight Savings time and leap years.
Fall asleep to your favorite station or a carefully chosen iPod playlist using the unit's programmable sleep timer (15 to 120 minutes in 15-minute increments). Gradual Wake and Gradual Sleep features will increase (with on wake-up) or decrease (on sleep) the system volume so as not to startle you.
The clock also comes with Sure Alarm battery backup--just install 2 AA batteries to activate the feature. In the event of a power failure, or if you disconnect the AC power cord to move it, the Sure Alarm system will maintain your clock and alarm setting for the life of the batteries, ensuring that the alarm will sound at the set time.

Hi,

I bought this clock four (this is important) months ago from a brick and mortar store (not Amazon, which is selling it for about $50 less.Darn.)

The design is very good, and the interface is intuitive. It comes with a nice remote control, which is handy, although some of the buttons could be better arranged. My only other design complaint is that the tuning/volume "slide wheels" are made from the same slick surface as the rest of the unit. This makes it harder to turn with your finger than it ought to be.But these are minor quibbles with an otherwise well designed product.

Here's my real complaint: after about two months, I wasn't able to play music from my iPhone through the iHome, which let's face it, is pretty much the reason I bought it.I already had a very nice Sony alarm clock thankyouverymuch.

I really thought the problem was my iPhone, and it took me a couple of weeks for met to get to the Apple store and have the Genius test it out.He ended up trying the phone out on an identical iHome in the store, and bingo, the phone worked fine, which means my iHome was the problem (Strike 1).

I called iHome customer service, that afternoon, and they were closed (Strike 2).Apparently their customer service people aren't interested in heard from customers in California past 4 PM eastern time. Then I emailed them, and received a prompt reply the next day (better!).

It turns out that iHome products only have a 90 day warranty! HELLO?90 DAYS? I was 95 days in.Even though the unit clearly failed during the warranty period, I was outta luck. (Strike 3)

I was giving the option to have the unit repaired for a $30 fee, which shipping both ways at my expense.By then, I'm halfway to the cost of a whole new unit. The level of quality and warranty length are just unacceptable.I would not purchase this unit again, despite my happiness with the unit whileit was working.

Also, the iP99 is packed with lots of innovative features, including alarm settings to complement your lifestyle so you can wake to your own custom iPhone playlist at different times on different days, a remote that controls the unit and iPod menu functions, AM/FM radio with presets, programmable snooze settings, and SRS WOW for an enhanced audio experience. iPod, Radio or Buzzer Alarm
Wake to your docked iPod, the radio, or--if you must--a classic buzzer alarm. Whichever you choose, a gradual alarm feature gently raises the alarm volume, so it's not too jarring. Dual alarm lets you set separate wake times.
The 7-5-2 alarm settings mean you can set separate wake times, either for every day or separate weekday/weekend times. You also can wake to the playlist or song of your choice.
Sleep Features
In designing the iP99, iHome paid special attention to the other end of the alarm clock equation--going to bed. Sleep to iPod, iPhone, or radio, with programmable sleep times of 120, 90, 60, 30, or 15 minutes. Gentle Sleep gradually decreases the music volume as you drift off to dreamland.
What's more, an Adjustable Sleep volume solves an old alarm clock problem, allowing you to select a comfortable "sleep" volume level without affecting the "wake to" or listening volume levels.
Programmable Snooze
The iP99's programmable snooze feature allows you to set snooze intervals of 1 to 60 minutes, so you can milk every last second of sleep before you're late for work or class.
Play and Charge Your iPod or iPhone
The iP99's universal dock plays and charges most docking iPod models (in addition to using them for alarms), along with the iPhone. So when you wake up, your device will have a full charge as you head out the door.
Quick Time Zone and DST Switch
Traveling or moving with your iP99? Adjust the preset time to any of seven different time zones at the touch of a button. Ditto on that pesky daylight savings time.
AM/FM Radio
The iP99 delivers solid radio listening with PLL digital tuning, an external AM antenna for better reception, and built-in automatic frequency control (AFC) for enhanced FM reception.
Save your favorite stations on the six AM or six FM presets.
Big Sound, Small Package
The iP99 delivers powerful audio with stereo drivers in specially designed Reson8 speaker chambers.
Reson8 is iHome's through-body ported speaker chamber technology. Porting speakers gives better bass response characteristics and helps the iP99 deliver sound beyond its size.
Auxiliary Input
Connect external devices like MP3 or CD players to the rear auxiliary input for your enjoyment.
Full-Function Remote Control
Enjoy convenient control from a distance with the included remote--control both radio and iPod functions.

iHome iH9 Alarm Clock Speaker System with Dock for iPod (Black) Review

iHome iH9 Alarm Clock Speaker System with Dock for iPod

(More customer reviews)
I have a couple minor complaints with the iHome IH9, let's get those out of the way. First complaint: the AM reception, even with the external antenna isn't great. With the antenna it is "OK" but without the antenna it is non-existent.My previous inexpensive AM/FM clock radio (with digital tuner) did a much better job with AM. Second complaint: I wish the volume wheel & adjustment wheel (top left, top right) were "grippy-er". Laying in bed they are kind of hard to turn. Finally, with the iPod sitting above the clock it seems a touch funky and fragile, but I think it is probably fine - almost all the iPod clocks have this EXACT same design, so, I am just paranoid.

Now, for the things I like. The sound is really good. I don't think it is an "auto-set" clock, but it came from the factory already set. Keeps good time (so far). Readout is super easy to read. There are 7 brightness settings to the display, including OFF, and it fast and easy to switch between them. The fall asleep to (radio/ipod/line-in) is great, the dual alarms to (buzzer/radio/ipod/ipod-playlist/line-in) is great. The fact that either alarm can be 7-day, 5-day (weekday), or 2-day (weekend) is fantastic. The remove is somewhat useful, I guess - haven't used it much.

It is a touch pricey, I paid $90 - but I really love the features and sound. No plans to return it.

The first time I saw this item, it really caught my eye. I liked that you could turn it on its side to watch a movie! And I really just liked the look of the machine itself!! It didn't disappoint me at all when I tried it out.The sound quality is really good. I was nicely surprised. It's nice and compact so you can put it on your night stand or desk and for get it's there.I'll be starting college in a couple weeks and I'm moving into a dorm, so the smaller the better. This will be a good alarm clock for me and my room mate. With the back up battery, you can easily move it to the bathroom or where ever and not have to reset the time. There's only two cons I can come up with.1. It really bites that there's no "Next" or "Last track" buttons on the machine though. You have to use the Ipod to change songs.2. It's really annoying that the remote is not included. It's another $20 to get it.Other than that, the machine is definitely worth it!
