(More customer reviews)Half the price of my Tivoli Songbook, the PR-D5 has superior AM/FM reception, dual stereo speakers, and easy-to-use ergonomics, making it even better than the Sangean single-speaker Sonido. As a bedside radio, it has even better FM reception than my Sangean WR-2 but it lacks the WR-2's depth and heaviness, qualities I like in a bedside radio. For a lighter, portable radio with no remote, go for the PR-D5. If you want more luxury in your radio (remote, numerical volume indicator, heavier feel) and don't mind a slight compromise in FM reception, you might want to check out the Sangean WR-2, which is compatible with an upgraded FM antenna attachment.

One question many will have is why the PR-D5 goes for about 15 dollars less than the Sonido. The answer most likely is that the 2.5-inch stereo speakers on the PR-D5 don't have the richness nor the depth of the Sonido's 3-inch monoaural speaker.

Update: Ironically, I don't like listening to talk radio on dual speakers. This is not a technological issue, but psychological. The voices don't seem as focused as they do on the Sangean WR-2's monoaural speaker. So if you're a heavy AM talk radio listener, you might want to opt for the WR-2.

Second Update: To really test the FM on the PR-D5, I tried to pull in the weak college station 88.9. The PR-D5 pulled in the station with clarity, even better than my Eton S350. The verdict: My PR-D5 is my best performing AM/FM radio, even better than the Eton/Grundig S350. That says quite a lot. Even more astounding, the PR-D5 is 15 dollars cheaper.

Third Update: I brought my PR-D5 to my work office and like all the digital radios I've tried it suffered compromised reception. I succeeded more with my Tivoli Model Three (same as the Model One with the additional clock). So for your office, if it's full of computer interference, you might want to go with an upscale analog radio like the aforementioned Tivoli Model One or Three.

Creative Labs Onyx Cambridge SoundWorks Radio 705 - Large Review

(More customer reviews)I have owned a Tivoli Model One radio for about 1-1/2 years. It has been the model to compare to in its price range, praised for its sensitive, quiet tuner, balanced high quality sound and high quality wood cabinet. When I wanted a new radio for my office, I considered buying a 2nd one. I heard a Boston Receptor radio at a local dept store and thought it sounded better than the model one, but it was more expensive and had an alarm clock with many features that would go to waste in an office. I read reviews about the Cambridge 705 that, although favorable, ranked it below the Boston and the Tivoli in both sound and reception performance. When I found it at Amazon for 89.99 + 9.01 shipping I thought I'd take a chance and buy one.(I have owned other Cambridge products that always performed better that their price would indicate).I must disagree somewhat on the reviews I read about these radios. To my ears,at medium to high volumes, the Cambridge is superior in sound quality to both. It also plays very loud for its size, closer to the Bose Wave radio at a fraction of the cost. At lower volumes the Boston and Tivoli seem a bit warmer than the 705(but it still sounds fine). I will agree that the tuner is not as sensitive as the Tivolis but, this is noticeable only on the weakest of stations. The 705s rubber coated knobs are also superior to the Tivoli's somewhat slick controls. The 705 has a separate power button that glows green when "on" and amber when the sleep timer funtion is activated. Unlike the Tivoli, this allows you to leave the function switch in the preferred mode-a minor but useful advantage. The 705 has a tone control that the Tivoli doesn,t. It is mostly useful in turning down the treble that tends to vary greatly on FM stations. On a strong station it sounds best close to the max bass setting between 9 and 10 O'Clock. Besides its slightly better tuner, the main advantage of the Tivoli is its solid and very attractive wood cabinet(no matter what finish you choose.) The Boston has a more solid composite body than the 705, however the shiny onyx cabinet that houses the 705 is very well done and much more expensive looking than it appears in web photos . It does vibrate more than the others but this does not seem to affect the bass performance, which is quite impressive, especially at the higher volumes that the other units can't match. I intend to purchase another 705 to give as a Father's day present. Cambridge has these on sale until Father's day for 99.99 which I believe is the reason other distributors are offering it at reduced prices.(it was originally 119.99). If you are in the market for a good table radio you might want to grab one at this price.I was expecting a radio good enough for office use. What I recieved was a radio that I wouldn't hesitate using in my home. A solid 4 stars for the underdog.

Clok Digital Tune AM/FM Clock Radio - TCR338 Review

(More customer reviews)I thought this would be a nice clock--it had the features I was looking for: digital radio tuner, dual alarm, aux in, small footprint.Two major problems really make it unusable for me:
(1) It is amazingly bright, even on the dim setting. The entire display is back lit.I put in a piece of tinted plastic to help further dim the display, and it was STILL too bright.
(2)It is LOUD!No matter what volume setting you put the radio on, the "gradual wake" feature goes to max volume in about 5-10 seconds.I was scrambling to turn it off in the morning before it woke up the whole house. I was literally on edge in the morning because of it.
If you don't mind being startled out of bed in the morning and need a good nightlight, this might be the clock for you, otherwise, steer clear.

Crane USA CRW-2 Wellness Radio Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased this clock for a soft, muted way of telling time in the wee hours of the morning. Brightness was a big factor for me. I can't sleep with a bright clock. One of the great things about this one is that the brightness is adjustable: high, low, or completely turned off. Low is PERFECT for a light sensitive sleeper like me. Others would probably get along just fine with the high setting. I should note that this clock was not placed directly beside my bed. Instead, it is about 6 feet away, and I can read it flawlessly without eyestrain--daytime or night.

I couldn't find any information on what exactly the nature sounds are, which was disappointing. Even more disappointing were the actual sounds themselves. The first one is supposed to sound like a babbling brook; the second is a meadow with birds; and the third is a kind of waterfall sounding noise. The "babbling brook" sounds more like someone blowing bubbles in a water glass. It's very annoying, so for those who like annoying alarms, perhaps this one's for you. The meadow birds are actually not bad at all--kind of soothing. The waterfall just plain hurts my ears. I blame this on the inability to turn the nature sounds down--you cannot adjust the volume of these at all.

Radio reception is acceptable. It comes with a wire antenna, which is adequately long. It's also coated white to hide on white walls easily. The tuner is the ridged wheel style. Mine might be a little funky. One of my favorite local radio stations is 98.9 FM. It won't come in on this clock radio unless it's set at 98.8. Not a huge deal; just something to consider. The solo speaker is as to be expected. I was neither disappointed nor impressed with it. No presets or anything fancy for the radio; just AM and FM functions. I wanted to use the alarm function without any sound playing (which I will get to in a second). The radio alarm option was perfect for this. I turned the alarm on radio and just turned the volume all the way down (the radio is the only alarm function that can be volume controlled).

Why would I want the alarm function without the actual alarm? The pretty lights! One of the major selling points for me on this clock radio was the rainbow and sunrise simulated lights. The pictures do not do them justice. For the rainbow setting (which can be turned on at whim via a switch--it's not just for the alarm), it will turn on when it's time for the alarm to go off. It rotates through myriad colors (red, blue, green, orange, purple, yellow) beautifully. For the sunrise setting, approximately 30 minutes before the alarm is to go off, the dome lights up with a deep red. As alarm time draws closer, the dome changes to a lighter red, an orange, an orange yellow, and then a brighter yellow, simulating a sunrise. THIS is the effect I wanted to use without the sound of an alarm. I can look at my clock across the room and see that if a color is present, it's time to get up soon, and depending on what color is displayed, I can guess how much longer I can doze. This eases me awake, as opposed to a jarring, blaring alarm.

First-time users might have to glance through the (short) user manual before utilizing all the features. I couldn't figure out how to test the nature sounds (you have to go through the alarm and have the alarm switch on the nature sound option). User manual is easy to read, gets to the point, and covers all the bases without being annoying. Once you've browsed this guide, the clock radio is pretty intuitive.

My only complaint (other than the two disappointing nature sounds) is that my device's battery back-up function does not work. I'm guessing that it was returned once already, as there was no protective cover on the clock display, and one of the stickers was placed awkwardly on the bag packaging. There's something loose inside the clock--something pretty small--and I am guessing this is why the battery back-up does not work. Because I did not buy this clock as my main alarm and we don't have power outages often, I'm overlooking this issue and keeping the clock. If it weren't for these two items of disappointment, this item would have received 5 stars.

The time accuracy (atomic clock) is beyond compare.The AM/FM PLL synthesized radio is static free and has excellent sound. Not stereo, but still pleasing!The unit is feature-laden. I love the "Humane Waking System" which gradually ramps up the sound for both alert/radio alarms so as not to jolt you out of bed.I'm a very heavy sleeper, and the adjustable volume for both alarms makes it plenty loud to get up.The independence of both alarms makes this extremely convenient for husband/wife and weekday/weekend settings. Another nice feature is the "nap" function.Set it and the alarm goes off from 10 minutes to 2 hours later, without having to touch the normal alarms.The background light display is a pleasing pastel blue, which changes to orange leting you know that the alarm is serious! The adjustability of the display is excellent, including a dimmer at the push of a button, and completely off if you so desire. I could go on and on about the features of this unit.However, here is where the "but" comes in...the instruction manual is not the most clearly written. The most serious problem, in my opinion, was not being able to pick up the atomic signal.Sure the instruction manual warns you that it might take up to 48 hours to receive the signal.It also warns you that the unit might need to be repositioned to receive the signal.I was frustrated after not getting the signal for a couple of days.Then I noticed that the back of the radio has a circular slot for the rectangular "block-shaped" atomic signal antenna.Once I put the antenna in the slot, the signal was received, and has been maintained ever since. This was NOTstated in the instruction manual. Another minor criticism is there are 14 (7 AM and 7FM) presets, not 21 as stated in the manual.14 is more than enough for me.The alarm instructions took some patience to learn. These criticisms of the instruction manual should in no way detract from the features and quality of the product, both of which are excellent.Buy this and you will be extremely happy.Just be patient and fiddle around with it.Nothing beats trial and error when it comes to high-tech gadgets.

Tivoli Audio SongBook AM / FM Alarm Clock Travel Radio, Silver Review

(More customer reviews)With iPod auxiliary, premium speaker, and above average AM/FM reception, the Songbook is an attractive radio. I've had mine for 3 years. It locks on stations well. The speaker is not overwhelming in volume or bass but produces a warm sound. The speaker is not as rich as Tivoli's brother, the Model One, but the Songbook, perhaps because of its telescopic antenna, gets far better FM reception. One of the advantages of the silver color is that it is aluminum, not rubber like the other colors and the rubber radios hold dirt, which is not easy to clean.

If the Songbook is too pricey for you, you can get similar speaker sound and superior AM/FM reception from the similarly sized Sangean PR-D7 (3-inch mono speaker) or the Sangean PR-D5 (2.5-inch dual stereo speakers).

(More customer reviews)I've owned the set of Proton radio and slave speaker.The sound is incredible.I have placed them in my bookshelf headboard where they are a perfect fit of form and function.All the controls are extremely workable and well-thought out.But even better is the fact that you can set it and forget it.I awaken to my favorite station, with the music ramping slowly up.I got to sleep using the sleep timer.Depending on which alarm you set, 1 or 2, the sound comes out of different speakers.Here in Texas we get lots of bad storms yet I've rarely had to reprogram my Proton; it holds the settings when the power's off.I highly recommend this unit.

Sangean DT-400W AM/FM Digital Weather Alert Pocket Radio Review

(More customer reviews)This is a fine radio with very nice improvements starting from its predecessor, the Sangean DT-200VX. It is a very light and small portable radio with very good battery life that can be taken almost everywhere for full as well as easy listening capabilities.

PROS:

1) It has quite good reception on all bands (AM/FM and Weatherband). Now it also has excellent and almost completely static-free reception on all 7 US frequency channels of the standard NOAA weather-band. In addition, this radio also has the official NOAA weather alert detection capability to signal the user of impending weather disasters as well as other problematic situations such as child abductions, flash floods, earthquakes, etc. However, this NOAA alert capability is NOT the latest S.A.M.E. technology (Specific Area Message Encoding) that is available on some other table top units that can give a county by county area warning to individual users. Like its predecessor, this radio also has a monaural/stereo switch (bandwidth control) for FM listening improvement, but there is no RF (radio frequency) DX gain switch on the DT-400W as there is on the new Sony SRF-37W for example, but see Con below.

2) It has a very big and easy to read display with a battery level indicator, a lock display indicator, a 90 minute shutoff capability (that can be disabled during each listening session if needed) with an on-screen indicator, etc. It also has a clock and a backlit display, but see Con below.

3) There is a very nice arrangement (called My Favorites) for as many as 19 presets for any band in any order with simple retrieval of all presets, but only in order from the first one designated to the 19th one in a logical progression (it won't go backwards to find the previous preset for example).

4) Its deep bass boost is a very nice feature.

5) Automatic scanning capability and seeking capability, but see Con below.

6) It also has a nice and easily removable belt clip for wearing the unit for jogging or walking.CONS:

1) Backlight cannot be turned off even in daytime and even in bright sunshine conditions. It is apparently an LED (light emitting diode) with an extremely low power drain, but it seems very illogical to me that it can't be overridden when it isn't needed at all. Apparently, it is actually only on briefly while tuning the radio and then it shuts itself off after a short time, but to not be able to disable it entirely when it is not needed seems absolutely counterintuitiveto me.

2) It is certainly well built with a fully attached battery compartment door (requiring two AA batteries), but it is not as rugged as the Sony SRF-37W for example (and the latter only requires 1 AAA battery). Of course the reception and acoustics are better overall on the DT-400W so get a good case (like the Sakar International HS-10, a small hard shell case which it fits like a glove).

3) A 90 day limited warranty from Sangean America is way too short given that even the Sony SRF-M37W has a 1 year limited warranty (see my review of the SRF-M37W and also its product manual for details).

4) During automatic scanning/seeking, the audio is muted so you can't hear any stations as they are detected. Only the strongest stations are picked up during the scanning/seeking process. Of course during manual scanning the individual stations are easily heard so that you can readily pick the station you want to listen to.

5) Sangean chose to put the speaker controls on the same slide switch along with the Stereo/Mono (bandwidth) changing capability. In my opinion the arrangement was better on the DT-200V with a simple and direct push button Stereo/Mono switch on the front of the radio and not on the side with one other commonly used function.

6) As also discussed by others, you must connect the short trailing wire (that is supplied by Sangean) or else connect a set of supplied earbuds (or a more comfortable set of headphones- see below) in order to receive any FM or Weather-band transmissions at all- including the weather alert transmissions.

7) The supplied earbuds are very uncomfortable and could also be quite dangerous given the volume output that this unit is capable of with 2 AA batteries.

(More customer reviews)This is a very appealing clock radio with digital readout that gives you name of song, artist, and other information as you listen. The mono aural speaker is warm and full. The radio is attractive, solid and well-built, evincing nothing cheap or plastic-laden. The AM is very good. Most FM stations come in strong. But hard-to-get FM stations like 89.3 from Pasadena (I live 40 miles away in Torrance) requires that I move the FM antenna, but this is not a big deal, just a nitpick.

Most listeners will love the WR-2. But if you're a radio buff like I am and enjoy the outstanding FM reception of the Grundig S350, the Kaito 1101 and 1103 models (called Degen in China), then I'm afraid the WR-2 will disappoint. To be fair to the WR-2, the more expensive Bose radio suffers the same problem of mediocre FM reception.

Another important point: Because this radio has a remote control, it works great in your computer office. You can keep the WR-2 six feet or so away from your computer and avoid interference as you toggle stations and volume with your remote.

Post Script: Make sure to turn on the external antenna switch in the back of the Sangean. It improves reception by tenfold.

Update: I bought a second WR-2 (in black) three years after the first and get excellent FM reception so apparently the radio has improved in newer models. New rating: 5 stars.

Even though the WR-2 is advertised as an AM/FM radio, it offers much more than a standard digital tuner, including a Radio Data System (RDS) that displays short text messages on applicable FM stations, along with support for the Enhanced Other Network (EON) and its traffic information (available in certain regions). And unlike most tabletop radios, the WR-2 lets listeners adjust the treble and bass levels via the variable volume control. In its default mode, the rotary volume knob displays the volume level from 1 to 60. Tap it once, however, and it turns into a full-range treble control, and two taps creates a full-range bass control. Additional features include a clock with an alarm (radio or buzzer), an auxiliary input jack for connecting such devices as an iPod or MP3 player (both of which sound great through the speaker), a recording output jack, 10 memory presets that help you quickly find your favorite stations, and a full-featured infrared remote control.
A final bonus stems from the power backup function, which plays the radio for six minutes during a power failure (ideal for emergencies) and retains the memory preset and clock values for about an hour. The WR-2 measures roughly 9.5 by 4.5 by 6 inches (W x H x D) and weighs 5.5 pounds.

(More customer reviews)I spent a lot of time trying to find the perfect alarm clock for my bedroom and, as you can tell, I am still looking. The Sangean RCR-2 certainly has some attractive features like the atomic clock, which took a few hours to set itself, and the nice styling but it fails in so many areas as an alarm clock. First, and most importantly, the display is unreadable. It is very busy with lots of symbols and numbers but using very thin LCD numerals for the time and the off axis viewing angle is very small; you must basically face it head on. Worst of all, however, is the blindingly bright orange backlight with makes is impossible for night adjusted eyes to read the display if you want to check the time in the middle of the night. It is so bright as to cast shadows throughout the room. I keep it across the room but I can't imagine trying to sleep with this minor sun positioned on the nightstand.Sure, you can turn off the backlight but then the clock is invisible at night. Maybe LEDs are not cool but they make a lot more sense for an alarm clock. Also, it takes at least four button presses to turn on the alarm as opposed to one on my old alarm.

Display
Here is where the RCR-5 truly shines, as it incorporates a backlit LCD with adjustable intensity:one may adjust the backlight to suit your needs, so you have a perfectly legible, yet not too bright display (at night) which can never be "washed out", even in direct sunlight.The display even has a clever feature whereby it will illuminate to full intensity when any of the buttons are pressed, after which it returns to the user's preset intensity after ten seconds. As you can see from the product photos, the display is of a soft, warm color, most conducive to a good sleeping environment; other clock radios using bright blue or green illumination, IMHO, should be avoided if you want to get any sleep.

Auxiliary Input
Very useful for listening to my podcasts at night; when an external source is attached, the Band button will cycle through AM/FM/AU; when none is attached, only AM/FM are available, thereby eliminating "clutter" for those who do not wish to enable this feature.(Note:I'm old-school, and prefer using this method over a "Dockable" iPod solution, as I prefer to completely run my iPod's battery source to zero before recharging...)

Flexibility in Programming
Only found on more expensive clock radios, this model will allow you to use the "Sleep" feature to listen to a particular station (or podcast with the Auxiliaryfeature) at night, and then to wake to radio on a different station.In addition, all alarms allow Daily, Mon-Fri, or Single, with the Audible Alarm using a gentle "ramp-up" feature.

Reception and Speaker Quality
The radio's receiver portion of this product is very good, rivaled by only my Sony short wave receiver (a great radio, by the way!); what looks like a 3-inch speaker provides a very warm, intelligible output, very suitable for the spoken word, adequate for music.If you need a strong system for powerful music, I would suggest purchasing an additional desktop speaker setup (such as for a computer) which can be attached to the headphone output by means of a standard mini-jack connection.

Finally, a no-nonsense Sleep function
Sangean has cleverly incorporated the Sleep function into the Power button (which is gently illuminated when the radio's off); to turn the radio on or off, press the button.To use the Sleep feature, press and hold the same button to select up to 120 minutes.Simple, effective, "it just works".

Final Recommendation
Well, what more can I say?This product works for me (and I'm purchasing three more for gifts) and has a lot going for it, including high value (very reasonably priced!).Is there anything that you should be aware of?Yes:

>As described in the previous customer's entry, setting the alarm may require a few extra key-strokes, as this product offers many options when it comes to waking by either the alarm or the radio; if you do not need all of these features, you may wish to consider something of simpler means.That being said, it took me only about 22 seconds to set the alarm; for me, it was relatively intuitive and logical.

>The built-in battery back up feature only works for about ten minutes worth of backup, according to the manual; in my neck of the woods, this is not a big issue, but should be noted if you experience many nighttime blackouts where you are located.

>Even though this model is referred to as an "RCR-5", it should be noted that it does not employ an automatic time synchronization feature as is found on Sangean's higher end clock radios.(Not a big issue for me, and may actually be desirable for those of us who prefer to set our clocks 5, 10, or 15 minutes fast to "keep us on time"!)
