12-BAND AM/FM/Lwith SW1-9 Highly Sensitive Multi-band Radio Review

12-BAND AM/FM/Lwith SW1-9 Highly Sensitive Multi-band Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I know this is an inexpensive radio but I still expected more than delivered.
Cons:
1. Display screen was badly stained/clouded underneath the protective plastic.
2. Tuning on the AM band was off by 5-6 Khz.
3. Large gaps in housing seams (two pcs of the body didn't fit together well at all).
4. Reception of both AM and FM bands was quite poor.
5. Takes 2-AAA batteries, not 2-AA like the description states.
6. I returned mine for the above reasons, mostly 1 and 2.

Pros:
1. Very cool looking radio, the design sold it.

Summary:
Not recommended as it appears this radio is a good example of "you get what you pay for" and I expected more.

A nice looking product, but form should follow function....and it doesn't perform that well. Clock is somewhat difficult to read...darker than any other led clocks I own. Also, the radio is difficult if not impossible to tune. Most of my favorites come in mixed with another.Alarm works well however. And for $10 what was I expecting?
So it went in the guest room.Let them complain.

Sony LIV Kitchen CD Clock Radio - ICFCD553LIV2

First I owned the earlier LIV radio. It was only a C-note to buy, but it had a cheap plastic look about it. Most importantly, any radio is only as good as it's reception. That old one could not pull in many stations including my favorite most listened to one. The new LIV was pricier and I thought I'd try it to see if Sony improved it, or just introduced a costlier gimmick. The appearance is first rate that looks like a high-end stereo component and compliments my stainless steel appliances. The antenna is in the power cord like the old one and this cord was noticably shorter. They did something right as this unit pulled in more stations with clear reception, including my favorite station. The CD section works fine, but I use this mainly for the radio now. It sees daily usage in my kitchen and I'd recommend it highly.

I was a little shocked to see this ancient (by consumer electronics standards) product still for sale.I bought mine in Japan over ten years ago and still use it daily.I was also shocked to see a price point of $199.I don't remember what I paid for it but I doubt it was that much even 10 years ago.As a product it's been fine. It's compact and portable and puts out very good sound for its size. The one-button daylight savings time change is handy. On the downside, the display is hard to read from across a room and the controls are a little less than intuitive.

This handy travel clock-radio lets you wake to CD, radio, or buzzer and start your day with a favorite news or music station, or any track you select on a CD. The AM/FM stereo tuner lets you choose from the full range of radio talk and music programming and enjoy them in stereo sound, while the five random-memory presets provide convenient, one-button tuning to your choice of AM or FM stations. The Mega Bass sound system produces rich, deep bass tones with virtually inaudible harmonic distortion, while the built-in stereo speakers enhance the realistic listening effect with left- and right-channel speakers. The clock also features forward/reverse time setting capability for easy, speedy, and efficient time and alarm settings, and the world/local time button lets you match up time zones and automatically convert to local time. The summer time button adds or subtracts an hour from the local time setting to allow for easy Daylight Savings Time adjustment.

I bought this radio/cd for my wife to enjoy in the kitchen. It has proven a hit. Truly fine sound quality for its size and profile. ... its small profile and superior sound made this well worth the added price. Installation was fairly easy.
I actually purchased the "stock" sony model as opposed to the "Liv" version ... It is silver and looks a bit less "hip".

Sony ICF-C773 Dream Machine AM/FM Clock Radio With Fifteen Station Presets Review

Sony ICF-C773 Dream Machine AM/FM Clock Radio With Fifteen Station Presets
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When it comes to consumer electronics, I expect a certain amount of embellishment in the product portrayal, but with the ICF-C773, Sony has come precariously close to the realm of blatant false advertising. From the misleading description to the blatantly false picture, nothing about this clock delivers what it promises.

Based on the description, I *thought* that the clock would gradually ease me out of sleep, with a warm soothing light and soft music. The Amazon product description talks about a "calming effect" and adjustable illumination.Sounds nice, doesn't it? Instead, when this thing goes off it is like the apocalypse has finally arrived. The harsh, alien, LED lights will blink on and off, and if you combine that with the godawful alarm tones, you will find yourself leaping out of bed and looking for a weapon of some sort. Infuriatingly, you have NO control over this blinking feature, other than to turn off the light completely.

Right now, I bet you are thinking to yourself: "Well, at least it looks cool..." Alas, no. It seems that Sony could give Maxim magazine some tips on airbrushing. The clock looks NOTHING like the picture. The sides of this thing are pure, bright white, from top to bottom. But what really stung me is the LCD display. In Sony's artistic rendering, the display is pure black and the numbers are pure white. This grossly misleading picture caused me to assume that the clock would just light up the numbers, like older clock radios do. This method produces easy to read numbers during both day AND night while producing a minimal amount of extra light at night. In reality, the entire display glows blue-white and the numbers are a slightly lighter shade. During the day you can barely see the numbers and at night you can read a book by the light this thing puts out. Thankfully, Sony included a low setting for the screen, which is OK for night, but makes the clock completely unreadable during the day.

Then there are the buttons, buttons, buttons. This thing is covered with buttons, and in what I am sure is some fiendish attempt to drive me to insanity, the buttons you will use the most are located on the back of the unit, where you cannot see them. Prepare yourself for countless moments of frustration as you fumble around the back of this thing pressing buttons until you get the right one. And while doing so, be careful not to bump the analog (not digital!) wheels that control the radio volume and light brightness.

This clock is a huge disappointment, not just because of the reasons above, and not just because of the grossly inflated price, but because it teases you with cool features that just don't deliver. Avoid this clock at all costs.

This is a good item if you are just interested in listing to the radio(talk shows ,baseball game and music). Channels are grounded and precise. The speaker sound is very clear, with adjustable sound volume. No need to use the headphones unless you want privacy.
Far superior to the JWIN JX-M3; I have both.
I'm just not sure what X is for in X-BBS, or the D is for in D-BBS or what the difference is between the JWIN JXM20ORG and this JWIN radio. They look exactly the same, but have a big price difference.

Sony ICF-M1000 Table Top Radio Review

Sony ICF-M1000 Table Top Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This radio from Sony is placed to compete with similar products from Tivoli (Henry Kloss Model One) and Boston Acoustics (Receptor Radio). All of these products are single speaker (mono) AM/FM radios that contain no CD or cassette players and have no remote control. If that is not what you are looking for in a radio, this product is not for you; however, if you are looking for a simple tabletop radio, continue on.

Sony hoped to cash in on the popularity of simple table radios, however their offering falls short of its competitors. The radio is gloss black with a black fabric front that hides the speaker. It is significantly larger than the other radios in this class, about double the size of either the Kloss or the Receptor. Despite the size of the cabinet, the speaker is roughly the same size as those found on the other radios. The LCD display is small and somewhat hard to read from certain angles (there is an acrylic prism sitting on top of the LCD that reflects the image forward and upward). There are three knobs on the front that control tuning, volume and tone. The radio is built well, but I think the black fabric makes it seem a bit cheap. Removing the fabric cover exposes the cheap wood interior and lowers the aesthetics even further.

By itself this radio has a decent sound, and the tone control allows for tweaking of the sound quality. However when I compare the sound quality to that of the Kloss and Receptor, this product again falls short. This radio lacked the bass response of its competitors, despite its much larger size. Midranges were decent, comparable to the others (talk radio sounds almost the same among the three radios). Trebles were decent, although slightly muddled unless the tone control was set to high. On the plus side, the tuning was accurate and the reception clear, probably the best of the three, although all are very good.

The Sony radio has line-out/line-in 1/8" jacks in the rear for connecting to an mp3 or CD player (as does the Kloss, but not the receptor). There are no alarm-clock functions on this radio, which further limits its usefulness.

In conclusion, this would be a very decent radio if it were fifty dollars. However, Sony has set the price so that it competes with radios that are far superior to it. If you are to spend this kind of money on a table radio, I suggest you look elsewhere (I recommend the Receptor Radio).

Sony ICF-CD543RM Kitchen CD Clock Radio (Silver) Review

Sony ICF-CD543RM Kitchen CD Clock Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I tried other radios in the kitchen, but none could compare to the sound of this unit. FM reception's pretty good too. The "kitchen friendly" controls are easy to clean. Mounting is done by drilling three holes, for which it has a paper template, and it has adjustable spacers to accommodate cabinets with recessed bottoms. It's about 11-1/2 inches deep and just an inch or two wider.

I don't seem to get any weather band channels, and the TV channels I get are very quiet so I have to remember to turn the sound down before switching to FM or CD. The timer's a nice feature for the kitchen but seconds can't be set and it takes a lot of turning to get to longer bake times, like an hour or more. The magnetic remote's also nice but you have to be able to see the sensor and stay within about 45 degrees for it to work.

Overall I'm very happy with it. The sound is great and makes spending all day around the kitchen less lonely, plus it doesn't take up any counter space. I do feel like I paid a small premium for the name Sony though.

Sangean HDR-1 Table Top HD Radio Receiver Review

Sangean HDR-1 Table Top HD Radio Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After owning a Sangean WR-2 clock radio for a year and a half and growing more fond of it, I decided to get another upscale radio for my office, a radio with a remote control so I could avoid computer interference by keeping the radio a good 6 feet away. After reading about HD radio and Sangean's entrance into the market, I decided to take a chance. Worst case scenario, I figured, is that it would be another high-grade radio like my Sangean WR-2. Like the WR-2, the HDR-1 has a high-grade feel, a solid construction, memory presets, a remote control, and strong sensitivity on AM and FM. However, the HDR-1 is definitely an upgrade and you might consider that it has the following advantages and differences:

1. Two speakers instead of one.
2. Easy-to-use (simply plug in) AM external antenna for hard-to-get stations.
3. HD quality is clearly discernable, clear, full, no static, no "birdy," no chirps.
4. Some HD stations have multi-broadcasts.
5. Most functions have to be performed with the remote. For this reason, I don't see this as a bedside radio. Who wants to squint at their remote in a dark bedroom? More appropriate for a bedside radio is the Sangean WR-2 or the Eton Sound 100. But for office or anywhere that requires a distance between you and your radio, the HDR-1 is an excellent choice.

Update: Be aware that in AM it takes a few seconds before the radio "kicks in" to digital mode. The sound is so good it's hard to listen to non-digital AM stations. Even the strongest station in Los Angeles, KFI 640, sounds bad because it's non HD. One last point: I'm more and more in love with the speaker sound. I can't even play them as loud as I want to as I'm working when I have the radio on. But these dual speakers really shine.

Second Update: 1-19-07: After 3 weeks, I've discovered a weakness on AM: Rainy weather compromises the HD signal. This problem is compounded by the fact that the radio has weak conventional AM (much weaker for example than my Sangean WR-2 and my Eton/Grundig S350) so that when it's not in HD mode the AM sounds bad, a constant crackle in the background. FM remains strong in both HD and non HD mode, but Sangean needs to address this AM weakness.

RCA RP5620 SmartSnooze Dual Wake AM/FM CD Clock Radio Review

RCA RP5620 SmartSnooze Dual Wake AM/FM CD Clock Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Okay... so I've only had this clock for a few days now, so I can't comment on how long it'll last, but so far this is the best CD alarm clock I've been able to find for under $50 bucks!

It was important for us to get a CD alarm clock as we like to wake up to nature sounds. My old Timex had nature sounds and they sounded terrible, not to mention you could hear the speaker click on a few seconds before the alarm would go off, just enough to startle you awake.

Anyways, here's what I like about this RCA model versus a few others I tried. It allows you to wake to a CD (ability to pick from multiple tracks), color changing choices for the LCD which on dim mode is great for not lighting up a room at night! It's easy to use, I found the directions simple and understandable, I also found the wheel easy to use and not a problem to grab. The unit does make slight noise when waking from CD, you hear the drive spinning up and a slight click on the speaker, but it's not enough to wake us up. It's pretty darn quiet. The sound quality is very good compared to others in this size. By no means is it a hi-fi system, but it sounds good for its size. It has speakers on both sides so you get stereo sound versus many of the mono speaks on other clocks. I also like the generally simple square shape of the clock, others are awkward or huge! I considered some of the Sony's but they were gigantic for a CD alarm clock. The snooze is fair and is adjustable. The Philips I had snoozed in 5 minute increments and could not be adjusted at all, not to mention the screen was way too bright even in dimmed mode.

The RCA does have a gradual wake up, but it only works on the buzzer. It takes about 40 seconds to reach full volume. I tried a Philips that had gradual wake as well, and it took about 15 seconds to reach full volume. Both too short of time in my opinion. Both started at a medium volume and rose to loud. Wish they'd start at zero volume and rise over 2-3 minutes. Since we're waking to CD's it really doesn't matter. As long as the CD motor and speaker noises don't wake us up before the sound starts playing. I customize my CD's to fade in over 5 minutes so gradual wake isn't super important to us, but it is a nice option to have. The graduake only works on the buzzer for this RCA. I also like that the RCA has battery backup and the alarm will still sound if the power is out.

The RCA only gets 4 stars because the graduake feature only works on the buzzer mode, and the buzzer is nasty. It'd also be nice if the LCD had the option of orange and red to choose from. You get red when the alarm goes off, but not as a stable color choice. Setting the alarm times takes awhile as the forward and back buttons control just that, there's no independent hour and minutes adjustment... so you may have to hold the buttons down for a while. It'd also be nice to see what CD track is playing at any time, versus just for a few seconds when the new track begins. The RCA doesn't have a date display so I guess I'm out of luck if I forget what day or year it is. Otherwise, it works, it sounds better than most small clocks, and the little screen is super cool with decent color choices and won't blind you at night in dim mode! But hey, it's an alarm clock! :p

Update May, 2008: The other one thing that is slightly annoying, is the viewing angle. Other than straight on, I would say if you go beyond 30 degrees to either side you can't read the display. So far the alarm clock hasn't failed us. :)
