i purchased this item as a gift because of the features it claimed to have... the battery back up, and in particular, the DUAL ALARM.
the clock radio that was delivered, which looks identical to the one sold here, is unfortunately,
a single alarm. no how come that is???

Ford Thunderbird Retro Neon Alarm Clock Radio with CD Player - Blue Review

Ford Thunderbird Retro Neon Alarm Clock Radio with CD Player - Blue

We got this for my son for his birthday as a combined CD-player, alarm clock, analog-clock so he can learn time, pseudo-nightlight. The functions work well and it looks great, particularly the neon ring around the edge (which was actually so bright we couldn't use it as a night light).

The negatives: the plastic parts are a little on the cheap side, and in particular we have had problem with the mode selector switching all by itself between "off" "radio" and "CD". We fiddled with it to make it stick a little better, but it still has to be adjusted every time the radio gets jostled.

I bought this as a gift for my nine year old daughter. It has been a great purchase. After showing my daughter how to operate the different functions, she has been an independent user. This alarm clock allows my daughter to listen to music on the radio or CD player. She can choose to wake up to music, radio, or buzzer. The size is a plus; it has replaced her oversized radio/multi CD player, which was too bulky and had too many functions. The large #s are easy to read and can be dimmed w/dimmer button. The blue # color is a winner;it is different from the usual red or orange and is her favorite color. The sound quality is great for the product.

Product Description:
Take your wake-up music out of the hands of DJs and create your own morning soundtrack with this jWin CD clock radio. Compatible with CDs, CD-Rs, and CD-RWs, the JL-CD811 plays both prerecorded and custom-burned albums, so you can build song compilations on your computer and listen to them through the radio's side speakers. As an alternative, you can turn to the digital AM/FM tuner to enjoy such standbys as NPR, talk radio news, and drive-time morning hosts, or simply set the alarm to sound an old-school buzzer each morning. And thanks to such CD playback options as repeat (one and all tracks) and random play, the device excels in non-alarm locations as well, such as in kitchens or garages. All this in a stylish, modern housing that takes up a minimum of space (the device measures 8.66 by 3.31 by 7.86 inches).
Additional features include a dual alarm function, which sounds two different alarms each morning so users can wake up on their own schedules; an easy-to-read oversized LCD screen; an adjustable sleep timer (59 minutes maximum); and a snooze alarm. The device runs on AC power but includes a 9-volt battery backup that preserves the settings should the power fail.

I purchased this CD clock radio because I found it difficult to sort through all the mixed reviews on everything else.

On the whole, I am very happy with it.It is easy to use, has a dimmer so I can sleep and am not bothered by the display, and the CD seats securely so that it does not bounce around as they can sometimes do in these small, inexpensive devices. It woke me right on schedule and was easy to wake up to.

The only drawback, and I guess you can't get everything in a device in this price range, is that the sound quality, particularly at the low levels I often use in my bedroom, is quite airy sounding.

If you want good sound -- or you "want it all" -- this is not the device for you.If you want a workable and inexpensive CD clock radio, this is a good choice in my opinion.

My old GE AM/FM/cassette clock radio finally died so looked online and in stores for a replacement without much luck. I had only 3 requirements: dual alarm, battery back-up and CD player (I have a Toshiba Gigabeat mp3 player so an ipod dock is useless to me). Most clock radios that met my needs cost $100 or more or were flea market brands that I knew nothing about. Then I found the Emerson Research CKD5811. This thing is damn near perfect! Not only does it have dual alarms, you can set each one for weekdays only, weekends only or everyday. And it also has a nap timer. Not only does it have battery back-up, it has a pre-installed lithium battery for the SmartSet time/date/day of the week functions and a 9 volt battery connection for the radio/buzzer/CD functions. Not only does it have a CD player, it plays CD-R/RWs and it actually sounds pretty good. You won't mistake it for an expensive home audio system, but for a clock radio, it's not bad at all. And on top of all that, it only costs $60 but yet feels like it's well made. So far I have only 2 complaints: the antenna built into the power cord doesn't have the greatest reception and even on the low setting, the LED display is too bright. But overall, the CKD5811 gets 2 thumbs up from me.

Product Description:
With Emerson's award-winning and patented SmartSet technology, the flashing "12:00" display is a thing of the past. On the first use of the CKD5811 Digital Tuning CD Clock Radio, it immediately sets itself to the correct year, month, date, day, and time in the Eastern Time Zone. If you live in a different time zone you make a simple, one-time adjustment to select your own zone. It also adjusts itself automatically for Daylight Saving Time and Leap Year. This clock radio features a bright blue LED display, with dimmer control. The dual alarm system allows you to program both alarms to operate on weekdays only, weekends only, or all seven days. Wake to your favorite music station, morning news, the buzzer or to your favorite CD. You can even select the specific track that you want to wake up to. Set the Nap Timer buzzer alarm to wake you from a nap of up to 99 minutes without having to change your normal alarm settings. The CKD5811 allows you to program up to 10 AM and 10 FM stations and 20 CD-tracks with a single track and all tracks repeat playback. The clock radio features a long-life lithium back-up battery that will back-up for as long as 5 to 8 years.

Sony ICF-CD853V AM/FM/TV/Weather Clock Radio/CD Player Review

Sony ICF-CD853V AM/FM/TV/Weather Clock Radio/CD Player

I've owned the "Liv" version of this alarm clock, same model just different color, for about 6 months now. I initially liked the digital tuner, CD-RW play ability, 3 alarms, and 3 Tuner function. Also I liked the compactness of it and it's small "footprint".
I'm afraid I must rate it unacceptable however, I'll explain why. First I have a problem with seeing the time on the LCD, being backlit makes it hard to read the numbers- even being placed directly across from my bed, it's also difficult to see at certain angles too (it completely disappears) I believe if just the numbers themselves (not the whole screen) were litthen this would be a solution. Secondly, I think the "buzzer" is way too polite or cute and could easily see someone sleeping thru it. It's not volume adjustable either. Lastly, and probably most important, this thing has only a 1 min internal back-up if the power fails. That is a critical design flaw in my opinion. In other words, if the power happens to go out for anytime longer than just 1 minute while you're sleeping count on oversleeping, being late, and seeing a flashing "12:00" to greet you when you wake. Like I said, this is simply unacceptable. I really don't understand why sony didn't just incorporate a 9V back-up like other alarm clocks use. In closing, I wish I never bought it, but oh well, I've learned my lesson. Please steer clear of sony alarm clocks until they improve these sort of design flaws.

I loved the picture of this item...I had just the place to put it in my home where it would look great. It does look great. It just hardly works. The whole thing only weighs a pound or two...this should have clued me in right away when unpacking it.The switches have an imprecise and awful feel and seemvery delicate. The sound quality is very poor (Remember those less than $5 transistor radios?) and the reception is worse.Even the strongest stations in my area only come in with a great deal of fuzzy sound and you can always hear the radio stations near them in the back ground.I haven't bought anything electronic that was this bad in years.Don't be fooled by the good looks...in this case beauty really is only skin deep.

RCA RP5620 SmartSnooze Dual Wake AM/FM CD Clock Radio Review

RCA RP5620 SmartSnooze Dual Wake AM/FM CD Clock Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Okay... so I've only had this clock for a few days now, so I can't comment on how long it'll last, but so far this is the best CD alarm clock I've been able to find for under $50 bucks!

It was important for us to get a CD alarm clock as we like to wake up to nature sounds. My old Timex had nature sounds and they sounded terrible, not to mention you could hear the speaker click on a few seconds before the alarm would go off, just enough to startle you awake.

Anyways, here's what I like about this RCA model versus a few others I tried. It allows you to wake to a CD (ability to pick from multiple tracks), color changing choices for the LCD which on dim mode is great for not lighting up a room at night! It's easy to use, I found the directions simple and understandable, I also found the wheel easy to use and not a problem to grab. The unit does make slight noise when waking from CD, you hear the drive spinning up and a slight click on the speaker, but it's not enough to wake us up. It's pretty darn quiet. The sound quality is very good compared to others in this size. By no means is it a hi-fi system, but it sounds good for its size. It has speakers on both sides so you get stereo sound versus many of the mono speaks on other clocks. I also like the generally simple square shape of the clock, others are awkward or huge! I considered some of the Sony's but they were gigantic for a CD alarm clock. The snooze is fair and is adjustable. The Philips I had snoozed in 5 minute increments and could not be adjusted at all, not to mention the screen was way too bright even in dimmed mode.

The RCA does have a gradual wake up, but it only works on the buzzer. It takes about 40 seconds to reach full volume. I tried a Philips that had gradual wake as well, and it took about 15 seconds to reach full volume. Both too short of time in my opinion. Both started at a medium volume and rose to loud. Wish they'd start at zero volume and rise over 2-3 minutes. Since we're waking to CD's it really doesn't matter. As long as the CD motor and speaker noises don't wake us up before the sound starts playing. I customize my CD's to fade in over 5 minutes so gradual wake isn't super important to us, but it is a nice option to have. The graduake only works on the buzzer for this RCA. I also like that the RCA has battery backup and the alarm will still sound if the power is out.

The RCA only gets 4 stars because the graduake feature only works on the buzzer mode, and the buzzer is nasty. It'd also be nice if the LCD had the option of orange and red to choose from. You get red when the alarm goes off, but not as a stable color choice. Setting the alarm times takes awhile as the forward and back buttons control just that, there's no independent hour and minutes adjustment... so you may have to hold the buttons down for a while. It'd also be nice to see what CD track is playing at any time, versus just for a few seconds when the new track begins. The RCA doesn't have a date display so I guess I'm out of luck if I forget what day or year it is. Otherwise, it works, it sounds better than most small clocks, and the little screen is super cool with decent color choices and won't blind you at night in dim mode! But hey, it's an alarm clock! :p

Update May, 2008: The other one thing that is slightly annoying, is the viewing angle. Other than straight on, I would say if you go beyond 30 degrees to either side you can't read the display. So far the alarm clock hasn't failed us. :)

I have finally come full-circle:I started with a Sony DreamMachine about 10 years ago, and after going through a couple of other brands/configurations, I'm finally back to a Sony.

This is a nice unit -- decent sound, OK radio reception, good CD player, great features. Although the color is listed as "white," it's really more of a light putty color, very pale gray.

The biggest advantage of this unit over others I've tried is EASE OF USE and set-up.The "owner's manual" is small because everything is so straightforward and easy to find/operate.

Initial set-up takes less than a second:the clock arrives preset to the correct time in EST; all you do is set the time zone by hitting the button marked "time zone," and voilĂ  -- the correct time pops in.Setting the alarm is also easy - took less than a minute to get it ready to go.

There are three light settings: really bright, reasonably bright, and backlight only, controlled via the "snooze" bar.The snooze gives you 10 minutes additional sleep time -- my last unit was 9 minutes, and I've had others with as few as 6 minutes.Ten "feels" just right to me.I can fall asleep to a CD, and wake to the "buzzer," which isn't really a buzzer at all -- more like a "chirp" that gradually gets louder, another nice feature. There's also a "nap" feature -- set it to your desired nap length, and it will wake you up without disturbing your alarm setting.

And, best of all, unlike other Sony models, this one has battery backup! If there's a power outage, you're safe. This is a big thing for me -- we have power outages 3-4 times each winter.

Very nice unit, well worth the money.

I did a fair amount of research both online and in local stores to find the best CD alarm clock for my money. Most of them seemed either way to expensive or cheaply made. As soon as I saw and tested out this unit, however, I knew it was a winner. Now after having purchased it and used it for a week or two I'm really very satisfied. This unit is built to last and has surprisingly "big" sound for its size. The CD player doesn't hum or whir loudly, the display is nice and big and the features are pretty easy to use.

A couple features that I don't think you'll find out about by reading the spec. chart are as follows:

-You can set both of the alarms to CD (which many other models boasting dual alarms won't allow) and even to the same track. The second alarm just overrides the first if it's still going.

-Buzzer alarm doesn't get progessively louder but does get progressively faster, which is nice.

-Snooze button works in 10 min. increments.

-CD lid is not spring loaded and must be opened and closed manually (which was actually one reason I liked this model, seeing as how nearly all of the other models seemed to have flimsy and often very slow opening mechanisms).

-Display can be seen fairly well even from an angle (which was a problem found with various other models).

We bought this for a bathroom radio and works well for that.We wanted digital tuning with presets so we could switch between several stations easily. After we got it, we tried it as out alarm clock but it only lasted one night.

The first problem is the blue backlit LCD display. It only has two brightness setting and they are both way to bright for a bedroom. It could work as a bright night light, but I recommend you don't face it towards the bed.;-)

We blocked the light for the night because what we really liked was the digital volume control. We thought it would let us set the radio volume each night without guessing how loud it would be in the morning. So the next morning we were rudely blasted awake.Reading the manual I found out the volume is factory set to fairly loud then gets louder if you don't turn it off.So if that is the right volume for you, you're in luck.If you think it's too loud (like we did), then you're out of luck.

So we have a nice bathroom radio/CD player. But for us the alarm is no good.

This is a clock radio for the serious radio guy.It is a bit on the beefy side for the nightstand, but that's where it will provide the most pleasure. It has several thoughtful features. You can adjust the brightness of the digital read-out.I found the medium setting to be just fine. The digitally-tuned radio provides good reception. One complaint I have about most clock radios today is that they are puny when it comes to pulling the stations in.This one does an adequate job with both AM and FM, at least in my neighborhood.Of course, it has nice pre-sets for favorite stations. The CD player sounds good, with or without the bass boost. You can select CD shuffle, repeat, etc.One small complaint would be with regard to the volume control. It is a thumbdial on the side towards the back. You have to fumble a bit to find it in the middle of the night, and we all know that if you are listening to radio in the middle of the night you don't want it to blast. If you are changing from station to station or to CD, there will likely be a big difference in volume that will have to be dealt with. All in all, a heavyweight entry in the AM/FM/CD clock radio field. There is no earphone jack, but that may not matter to most people. There is also no battery back-up, but the radio retains its memory during a short power interruption.

I have been looking around for a CD player/IPOD speaker combo for a long time now. Most others that I've seen were either too pricey, or too bulky, or had too many bells and whistles that I didn't care about, or had the IPOD speakers but no CD player, etc. I needed it to be compact so that it would fit into my home office space, but I also wanted good enough speakers so that I can fully enjoy the music.

I found this nifty little system and gave it a shot, and I've been very happy with it. It works well with my older version IPOD Nano (the system comes with several 'inserts' that you can sit on the IPOD base so that it holds your IPOD in place). As far as I know this should work with various versions and generations of the IPOD - Touch, Nano, etc.Again, I have a 3rd generation Nano and it works great.

The system itself is very easy to figure out. This is a CD player, clock, radio and IPOD speaker all in one. You just push 'power' and a button to select what you want to play - radio, cd player, Ipod. You can control your Ipod from the buttons on the system. The sound quality is pretty good - I am no expert, but I like what I hear. This system is also compact and can fit easily on a nightstand, small desk, kitchen corner, shelf unit, etc. It plugs into an electrical outlet but can also be used with batteries if desired.

Again, for $50, this was money well spent for me. I'm very pleased with this and highly recommend it.

This is a nice clock for the office, but I don't depend on it to wake me up. I chose this clock because of the dual alarms and iPod connection. The buzzer alarm is not very loud and turns off automatically when the radio alarm goes off.The radio is not good - very bad reception that fades in and out without moving the dial or antenna wire.I'm going to find a better alarm clock and take this to the office as a desk clock & iPod speaker. The good features: dimmer for the display, 2,5, 7 day alarms, automatically updates with Daylight Savings change and you can adjust the volume for the sleep setting without changing the alarm volume.
