(More customer reviews)Half the price of my Tivoli Songbook, the PR-D5 has superior AM/FM reception, dual stereo speakers, and easy-to-use ergonomics, making it even better than the Sangean single-speaker Sonido. As a bedside radio, it has even better FM reception than my Sangean WR-2 but it lacks the WR-2's depth and heaviness, qualities I like in a bedside radio. For a lighter, portable radio with no remote, go for the PR-D5. If you want more luxury in your radio (remote, numerical volume indicator, heavier feel) and don't mind a slight compromise in FM reception, you might want to check out the Sangean WR-2, which is compatible with an upgraded FM antenna attachment.

One question many will have is why the PR-D5 goes for about 15 dollars less than the Sonido. The answer most likely is that the 2.5-inch stereo speakers on the PR-D5 don't have the richness nor the depth of the Sonido's 3-inch monoaural speaker.

Update: Ironically, I don't like listening to talk radio on dual speakers. This is not a technological issue, but psychological. The voices don't seem as focused as they do on the Sangean WR-2's monoaural speaker. So if you're a heavy AM talk radio listener, you might want to opt for the WR-2.

Second Update: To really test the FM on the PR-D5, I tried to pull in the weak college station 88.9. The PR-D5 pulled in the station with clarity, even better than my Eton S350. The verdict: My PR-D5 is my best performing AM/FM radio, even better than the Eton/Grundig S350. That says quite a lot. Even more astounding, the PR-D5 is 15 dollars cheaper.

Third Update: I brought my PR-D5 to my work office and like all the digital radios I've tried it suffered compromised reception. I succeeded more with my Tivoli Model Three (same as the Model One with the additional clock). So for your office, if it's full of computer interference, you might want to go with an upscale analog radio like the aforementioned Tivoli Model One or Three.

Cons:
1. Display screen was badly stained/clouded underneath the protective plastic.
2. Tuning on the AM band was off by 5-6 Khz.
3. Large gaps in housing seams (two pcs of the body didn't fit together well at all).
4. Reception of both AM and FM bands was quite poor.
5. Takes 2-AAA batteries, not 2-AA like the description states.
6. I returned mine for the above reasons, mostly 1 and 2.

Pros:
1. Very cool looking radio, the design sold it.

Summary:
Not recommended as it appears this radio is a good example of "you get what you pay for" and I expected more.

The radio station that shows on the front window always screw up. I get some stations though. It would be good enough for those listening to a few stations (not radio surf) and stick with them. I bought it for the speaker feature. Not many small or tiny radios have the speaker function, most require a headphone. I give it a small credit for its overall small size and the decent sound that comes out of its tiny speaker.

(More customer reviews)My review is based on a refurbished product that I won in an online auction for much lower price. I am very satisfied with the product considering the amount I have paid for it. But, I am giving only 3 stars considering the real price of the product.
It is true that the mounting template that comes with the product is wrong. I had to make my own template. However, the mounting hardware includes three sets of spacers and two sets of screws that you can use in any combination to suit to your cabinet. Mine worked very well and is quite stable. I like the fact that it does not occupy any space on my kitchen counter top.
My wife said that the CD didn't work at one point. Then when I checked it, it was working fine. FM reception is not satisfactory. One of our favorite stations is not picked up. Manual says that the power cable should be stretched (I believe it acts as antenna), but I don't like the cable hanging all over the kitchen counter.
The instruction manual could be improved. Product is much bulkier for the sound it produces. There is a holder for the remote control at the bottom. It is still not clear to me as to how I can place the remote in the holder. (Manual says nothing about this.) The way I have put it now makes the buttons on the remote press against the bottom surface of the product. You must use only the remote control to utilize some of the features such as setting the presets.
Overall, I like the product, but they could have done a much better job.

Jensen Portable Self-Powered AM/FM/NOAA Weather Band Radio - MR-720 (Black/Silver) Review

(More customer reviews)I was frustrated that there were no description for this item while other similar radios had tons of feedback.So I took a shot in the dark and ordered this one.

Upon opening the package there are instructions for plugging in the battery to be charged by the dynamo.The instructions tell you what position to put the switches while charging the battery.Not included in the product description is that the product "should" require about 3 minutes of winding to get 10 minutes of radio life.That seems rather short to me for the effort.Meanwhile - it also says that if you charge the radio with an AC Adapter(not included) after 24 hours charge - you will see 1 hour of play time. That seems to indicate that the best the battery would do - (if mine was chargeable) is 1 hour straight play after a full charge.That seems to me a terrible ratio.Regardless - the charging indicator never lit up - I switched switches a few ways - and after 5 minutes of winding without the charge indicating lighting up - it had not charge to power the radio.

All other features tested with 3 AA batteries plugged in

The display is digital, however the tuner is analog.It is possible to easily lose your station - however if you are careful upon release of the tuner - your station should stay.So the dial allows you to "find" your station instead of go exactly to the tuner like most modern car radiosallow.

AM and FM worked fine - AM stations came in pretty fuzzy - but most do in the High Desert of California.FM was clear on the local stations

NOAA - the Weather stations were all static except for one - which was clear with very minor static to be heard.Could be my area doesn't really support those stations

The siren worked.(They bundle these sirens with these radios - I don't think anyone really wants one)

The Flashlight worked, didn't strike me as amazingly bright but it was functional. Nothing wrong with the Flashlight at all.

I set the clock - but did not test to see if held the time after removing the batteries.

I returned the product - as the entire reason I bought this was I was looking for a "good" wind up radio - so far every one I see reviewed has some flaw - either the amount of winding required to hold a charge or doesn't get reception.As this one would not even begin to charge the rechargeable battery it was worthless to me - also - the un-advertised limitations to winding vs charging/play time were skewed vs my expectations.Let alone that a 24 hour charge would only provide 1 hour - this is ridiculous - you get far better time out of standard AA Rechargeables.

It is POSSIBLE - that I was just unlucky with the rechargeable battery on my radio - but over all - unless you like winding 3 minutes for 10 minutes of air play - I would recommend no one buy this product.

I gave this 2 stars instead of 1 simply because the other features worked fine under AA power.However the time (and in my case utter brokenness of the rechargeable) to recharge and sustain play time are poor.

(More customer reviews)The Bose Wave Radio II is easy to use, has top-of-the-line speakers and has a high-quality build. I use mine as a TV stereo speaker. The auxiliary input works for that function and what I like is that it doesn't take up a lot of space next to the TV. Indeed, incredible sound for the size of the speakers. So why only four stars, not five? Because the Bose, for all the money it costs, is not a top radio performer. It has only average AM reception with its internal ferrite antenna and worse its FM relies on the power cord for what is truly a lame "antenna." So as a speaker, the Bose is great but as a radio it is well below par. For hooking up to your TV, the Bose is outstanding. But as a bedside radio? No way. You would be better off buying a 159-dollar Sangean WR-2, a 259-dollar Sangean HDR-1, or a 159-dollar Tivoli Songbook for your bedside. But if you're integrating the Bose into your TV home entertainment system and you don't mind spending the money and you're not fastidious about your FM reception, then you will enjoy the Bose.

(More customer reviews)This is a good item if you are just interested in listing to the radio(talk shows ,baseball game and music). Channels are grounded and precise. The speaker sound is very clear, with adjustable sound volume. No need to use the headphones unless you want privacy.
Far superior to the JWIN JX-M3; I have both.
I'm just not sure what X is for in X-BBS, or the D is for in D-BBS or what the difference is between the JWIN JXM20ORG and this JWIN radio. They look exactly the same, but have a big price difference.

Naxa NR-716 Blue AM/FM Portable Mini Alarm Clock Radio w/Earphones Review

(More customer reviews)I have owned many dozens of radios. I just received this Naxa NX-716. The first thing I noticed that all the components were really cheap (battery door, belt clip, volume control) and from experience, I know they won't last long. But the big - and I mean big - problem is the tuning. Although it is digital, it has an old style tuning wheel. For whatever reason (probably because it is a piece of junk) it only plays the most powerful stations. In other words if I go from the lowest frequency to the highest I only receive about five stations (as opposed to over 20 on any other decent radio. I will never be able to report on battery life because I will never use this piece of garbage again. A true loser. The junky earbuds fit my other pocket job, so I can probably salvage something out of this mess. I knew it was cheap going in, but I never knew a company would release something on this very low level. With batteries installed, I guess it could pass as a light paper weight, but that's about all you get. By the way, it looks very thin in the photo - not so thin. From front to back of clip, it's over an inch thick. And the reason they don't show an enlarged image is that all those fancy buttons on the front do very little - five are for the clock, one turns the power off, one turns FM radio on and the last one turns AM power on. What a joke! And just one last kick in the pants - I ordered black and got blue.

(More customer reviews)I understand that you shouldn't expect a lot from the radio that lists under $15 but I believe that manufacturer should deliver on the basic functionality. None of the short wave bands works, all you get is a lot of static and some distorted FM transmissions (yes, on SW band). Also, I've noticed that the the frequency bands don't follow standard convention, which could make some of them pretty useless (if they were working).
I own several portable AM/FM/SW radios and, although some of them have better SW reception than others, I've never had an item that claims SW coverage but has none.
On the positive note, AM/FM seems to be OK.

Emerson RP6251 Portable Weather Clock Radio Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this Chinese made radio quickly, without any research because I needed a radio to take to a construction job I was heading to. This radio is about the size of a book and fairly light weight even with batteries. Overall, I think this radio is overpriced by about $5.

What I like (pros):
The tuner and volume controls are analog wheels on the side of the unit. I prefer analog tuning and volume control because I feel that I have more control over it and can get exactly what I want. The volume control is good and does not dramatically change the volume with subtle wheel rotation.

The tuner scale if fairly accurate on FM and on the lower 1/2 of the AM band. The upper 1/2 of the AM band is not too accurate (showing 1080 AM as somewhere around 1600 AM). The literature doesn't specify the frequency range for this radio; however, I was able to receive the local Smooth Jazz station at 87.7 FM and there were broadcasts that I could receive even below that frequency. The FM appears to stretch up to 108 MHz which is an average range for FM. AM seems to go from about 530 (or below) to 1710 or so; an average range for AM too.

It has a digital clock with a date (month/day) function. Pushing the Mode button on top displays the date for 1 second. There is also a yellow button to turn on the backlight for the clock. The light is a soft indigo blue lasting approximately 8 seconds.

The other thing that I REALLY like about this radio is that the power cord is permanently attached to the radio (no wall wart adapter) and can be folded and stowed in the batter compartment. This 6 volt radio can also work on 4 AA size batteries. I don't know how long the batteries last as I have always used this radio with AC power.

What I DON'T like (cons):
First off, weather is a very important part of life here in Alaska. The NOAA weather service has stations broadcasting here that can be heard from nearly anywhere in the state (in my area on 162.550 MHz). This radio which boasts instant weather reception (with a button press) does not pick up ANY weather broadcasts on ANY of NOAA's frequencies. Once the weather button is depressed, you can fine tune the weather receiver between 162.400 - 162.550 MHz. Even using the weather tuning dial (located on the back of the radio), I was unable to hear ANY weather transmissions--only static. The telescopic antenna was fully extended and I moved the antenna and the radio to different positions to try to receive a NOAA broadcast but I only received static. For comparison, I have a handheld, programmable scanner in the same room as this radio and it can receive the NOAA station without any trouble. The BIG selling point for the radio beyond simply being a portable AM/FM radio is that it should receive weather. It does not. Perhaps, I have a faulty unit. For this price (and quality) it's not worth my time to bother returning it or trouble shooting it. Considering the weather feature is a major selling point for this radio, the quality control department should have discovered this problem before it left the factory. Either Emerson quality control is poor or this product is poor. Either way, the weather function on these radios is not dependable.

With the unit turned OFF, if you depress the weather button, the weather function turns on at FULL VOLUME and you cannot turn it down. If the unit is ON, then you can adjust the volume of the weather function to your liking.

Speaking of volume, this has about a 2-1/2 inch speaker and it distorts above 2/3 volume. So you can't get very loud with this radio without distortion. My Eton FR-250 was much louder.

Overall reception is mediocre. I detected static and/or distortion on many of the stations on both AM and FM. All but the most powerful stations had some level of static. Also, this isn't a great AM (or FM) receiver as it only received the closest and most powerful stations in the area. There is minimal tuner drift requiring some slight re-tuning occasionally. For the most part, it holds the stations you tune in. My Eton FR-250 received AM stations from roughly 200 miles away. This radio only received AM stations within about a 12 mile radius.

There is an earphone jack on the side of the unit. This is an EARphone jack and not a HEADphone jack. The audio only comes out of the left ear piece. This is the 21st century! Aren't we beyond this yet? Why are electronics manufacturers still making radios with left channel only mono? It shouldn't be that difficult or expensive to send mono to both channels. This very outdated feature is an annoying disappointment.

This radio is light weight and the switches are dials on the front that you have to grab and twist. I have this radio sitting on a counter top and I always have to operate it with two hands because it's so light and has a poor center of gravity (more of the weight is at the top of the radio). Also, the power and band dials are rather wide (not narrow enough to easily "pinch" with the finger and thumb) so when I grab a dial to turn it (power or band) the radio slides away from me so I'm forced to hold the radio with one hand while I operate a switch with the other. With a radio this shape and design, it may have been smarter to put the controls on the TOP of the unit rather than the front.

If this radio was lost or stolen, I would not buy another one. For the price range, I think there may be better options available--in hindsight, I would have rather bought the Sony ICF38 Portable AM/FM Radio (Black); however, I realize that radios are expensive to begin with and an increase in quality often brings an increase in price. Even with all the mp3 and computerized technology available today, the cost of radios is continuing to rise every few months. Overall, I would not really recommend this radio for most applications. DO NOT buy this radio if you need weather service broadcasts--that feature simply does not function.

This is a great radio. I've owned it for nearly a week now and it's worked flawlessly. I was looking for a radio for my desk at work and I couldn't have made a better choice. Over the past few weeks I read every review I could find about every internet radio on the market. I finally decided on this one. I really love it. The sound is great but don't expect to be using it on full volume to cover your entire house.Here is my list of likes and dislikes and I hope it helps.
Like's:
-The size was perfect for my desk
-It looks very stylish
-I fired up the radio and had it working within minutes without reading the manual
-It was very easy to register at [...] and automatically download my radio stations and streams.
-I added some personal streams and they appeared on the screen of the radio within minutes.
-It was very easy to browse stations around the world without the use of my [...] account.
-The Audio sounded really good. Especially for the size of the radio
-WIFI setup was very simple. I moved it from one network to another and it remembered both password keys (WEP & WPA)
-The signal strength was really good especially with an internal antenna
-Navigation on the screen was very simple.
-When available it scrolled song or audio information across the screen. E.g. I tuned into aircraft traffic control after I added it to own streams after finding in on a website and within minutes weather information was scrolling across the screen.
-The remote is simple to use
-External input for an MP3 player, etc is a great addition
-It can stream audio from just about anywhere.....Radio Station Streams, Pandora, Sirius, Your PC, any MP3/REAL Audio/WMA stream off the net....

Dislike's:
-The headphone jack is on the back. I use my headphone a lot and it's a pain having to pull the radio forward each time I want to plug them in. The Aux (External) input should be on the back and the headphone input should be on the front.
-Although it's good that the radio is light, it tends to slide a little when I press the select button at times.
-I looked at the manual after I got everything working and it's laid out OK. They could lay it out just a little better.

Conclusion.

The radio is well worth the money. It's very easy to use and setup. The sound is great. The menus are easy to use. It's built well. In all it's a fantastic radio. If I were purchase another radio for my desk, beside my bed or on a table in the lounge room, I would buy another one of these for sure. In fact, I'm thinking about it right now. I give this one 5/5.

Sangean DT-400W AM/FM Digital Weather Alert Pocket Radio Review

(More customer reviews)This is a fine radio with very nice improvements starting from its predecessor, the Sangean DT-200VX. It is a very light and small portable radio with very good battery life that can be taken almost everywhere for full as well as easy listening capabilities.

PROS:

1) It has quite good reception on all bands (AM/FM and Weatherband). Now it also has excellent and almost completely static-free reception on all 7 US frequency channels of the standard NOAA weather-band. In addition, this radio also has the official NOAA weather alert detection capability to signal the user of impending weather disasters as well as other problematic situations such as child abductions, flash floods, earthquakes, etc. However, this NOAA alert capability is NOT the latest S.A.M.E. technology (Specific Area Message Encoding) that is available on some other table top units that can give a county by county area warning to individual users. Like its predecessor, this radio also has a monaural/stereo switch (bandwidth control) for FM listening improvement, but there is no RF (radio frequency) DX gain switch on the DT-400W as there is on the new Sony SRF-37W for example, but see Con below.

2) It has a very big and easy to read display with a battery level indicator, a lock display indicator, a 90 minute shutoff capability (that can be disabled during each listening session if needed) with an on-screen indicator, etc. It also has a clock and a backlit display, but see Con below.

3) There is a very nice arrangement (called My Favorites) for as many as 19 presets for any band in any order with simple retrieval of all presets, but only in order from the first one designated to the 19th one in a logical progression (it won't go backwards to find the previous preset for example).

4) Its deep bass boost is a very nice feature.

5) Automatic scanning capability and seeking capability, but see Con below.

6) It also has a nice and easily removable belt clip for wearing the unit for jogging or walking.CONS:

1) Backlight cannot be turned off even in daytime and even in bright sunshine conditions. It is apparently an LED (light emitting diode) with an extremely low power drain, but it seems very illogical to me that it can't be overridden when it isn't needed at all. Apparently, it is actually only on briefly while tuning the radio and then it shuts itself off after a short time, but to not be able to disable it entirely when it is not needed seems absolutely counterintuitiveto me.

2) It is certainly well built with a fully attached battery compartment door (requiring two AA batteries), but it is not as rugged as the Sony SRF-37W for example (and the latter only requires 1 AAA battery). Of course the reception and acoustics are better overall on the DT-400W so get a good case (like the Sakar International HS-10, a small hard shell case which it fits like a glove).

3) A 90 day limited warranty from Sangean America is way too short given that even the Sony SRF-M37W has a 1 year limited warranty (see my review of the SRF-M37W and also its product manual for details).

4) During automatic scanning/seeking, the audio is muted so you can't hear any stations as they are detected. Only the strongest stations are picked up during the scanning/seeking process. Of course during manual scanning the individual stations are easily heard so that you can readily pick the station you want to listen to.

5) Sangean chose to put the speaker controls on the same slide switch along with the Stereo/Mono (bandwidth) changing capability. In my opinion the arrangement was better on the DT-200V with a simple and direct push button Stereo/Mono switch on the front of the radio and not on the side with one other commonly used function.

6) As also discussed by others, you must connect the short trailing wire (that is supplied by Sangean) or else connect a set of supplied earbuds (or a more comfortable set of headphones- see below) in order to receive any FM or Weather-band transmissions at all- including the weather alert transmissions.

7) The supplied earbuds are very uncomfortable and could also be quite dangerous given the volume output that this unit is capable of with 2 AA batteries.

CC SWPocket AM/FM Shortwave Pocket Radio Review

(More customer reviews)CCrane/Redsun (its Chinese manufacturer) definitely has a winner with with the CC-SWP(Pocket) radio! I needed a small AM/FM/SW radio for travel and have compared several portable receivers including the Kaito KA11, Grundig G6 Aviator, Grundig YB-550PE, Sony ICF-SW35, Grundig eTraveller VII, Kaito KA1101, Kaito KA1102 and the Eton E100, etc. I am still not completely done with all my evaluations, but I definitely think that the CC SWP (CCRANE Shortwave pocket) or the Redsun RP-300 radio (available directly from China) is a great, extremely small (and one of the smallest available!) and also inexpensive and yet a very excellent receiver! I am extremely impressed right out of the box how well it performs even for quite weak signals with both very good sensitivity as well as selectivity.

PROS:

1) A single conversion, PLL (Phase-locked loop), fully digital pocket-sized radio that comes with a velcro slip case, carrying strap, earbuds and a VERY readable manual heavily edited by CCRANE (available on-line on their website too).
2) Excellent weak signal reception on ALL bands (am/fm/sw1/sw2). It really performs very well!
3) It has a fine and very useful tone switch (Music/news) with stereo through the earbuds as well as a two position Local/DX switch (RF gain attenuator for SW frequencies). This "tone" switch works well on both FM as well as on SW frequenices, thus providing a very effective frequency filter for detecting weaker signals on SW.
4) Lock switch and backlight control (with 8 second duration orange backlighting illuminating the display, only from the left side however).
5) A dedicated DISPLAY button with a different set of information provided by sucessive key pushes with the radio either on or off.
6) Numerous tuning methods are available including a fine tuning knob for AM and SW and including an ATS (automatic station retrieval tuning system), but unfortunately NOT for the automatic storage of available radio frequencies, direct keyboard frequency entry, etc. Coarser tuning is also available from the up/down scanning keys themselves. FM frequencies however only have the coarse tuning step available (0.10 MHz) regardless of the tuning method used.
7) Very high quality and very readable display with many many icons for indicating battery life (at a low battery condition) and a signal reception TUNE icon (as on the two digital Sony radios still available) and that works extremely well, wide/narrow (Music/News) tone filter setting (AM/SW), etc. Clock time and station frequency are not displayed simultaneously, but can be found on two separate DISPLAY screens.
8) Very long battery life (up to ~70 hours) using only 2 AA batteries
9) Easy channel memory presetting and automatic preset recall system using the tuning knob for the recall of 200 (00-199) preset memory locations.
10) It has an easy to use reset control pin hole on the bottom of the radio.
11) It has an internal group of setting for storing key performance features such as 9/10 kHz steps for international travel, 12/24 hour world clock time, wake-up alarms with times and a stored radio frequency or separately using an internal buzzer alarm, sleep mode (0 - 90 minutes in 5 minute increments), etc. These items are indicated on the unit's dedicated DISPLAY key indicated earlier above.

CONS: These are all extremely small however and of no great significance to me whatsoever!

1) Smallish speaker, but the sound quality is very good for its size.
2) Volume controls are a little awkward and uneven in level changes. 16 digital levels are also indicated on the screen. In addition, on other radios switching bands from SW to FM for example can be a very instantaneous ear blasting situation, but not so on the CC SWP radio which has a time delay built in between switching the individual bands giving the user a reaction time to change (usually lower) the volume levels. If the uneven volume levels are of concern to you a $7.95 volume control switch can be bought directly from CCRANE to adjust the levels analog-style with a "potentiometer" {pot) and the volume buttons on the keyboard once set initially can be left alone entirely. Plans are also apparently underway for a second version of this radio to be issued by Redsun in China with the volume control level unevenness issue due to be corrected. Personally I have not found this issue much of a problem at all especially with the easily connected volume control switch which is inserted in series along with the earphones for easy listening.
3) Most keys are initially hard to get to function unless a significant pressing is made. As time goes on they are definitely getting easier to push much more reliably however.
4) Shortwave reception is done in two very broad, but separate bands with a small frequency gap from 7.50 to 9.0 MHz (this gap region is NOT a super important part of the overall SW radio spectrum however). The two bands for SW are SW1: 2.30 - 7.50 MHz and SW2: 9.00 - 22.00 MHz which covers the vast majority of the available shortwave meterband spectrum.
5) It doesn't recharge the batteries internally and the battery compartment door is NOT attached to the radio, but the door nonetheless fits very snugly as the unit is quite well made and yet also very inexpensive compared with many other radios.
6) There is no external antenna jack available, but the internal ferrite rod antenna and the telescopic whip antenna seem to both pick up stations very reliably.
7) Band scanning is a little bit slow compared to several other portable receivers, but reception is NOT muted during scanning so stations can be very readily identified for listening).
8) FM stereo reception is always supplied to the earbuds. There is no control switch to ever be able to turn it off. For the stronger FM stations that is just fine, but for very weak FM it is of course somewhat problematic.
9) It doesn't come with an AC/DC adaptor charger unit, but one is available at least and quite inexpensively.
