(More customer reviews)The best thing that I can say about this is that other reviewers on this site shared my opinions about how terrible this product really is. At least I know that it wasn't something that I did wrong!

This product is really terrible and it gets one star simply because there is no option to give it zero stars.

First, the set up instructions are totally worthless. No text, just pictures that don't explain the details at all.

The cable fitting is on the back of the set which requires that the set be not installed against the wall, and it means that the set cannot be mounted flush with a kitchen cabinent. That's bad design for an under-the-counter unit. I went to Radio Shack and purchased a little 90 degree angle coaxial cable adapter that helped somewhat, but it didn't totally solve the problem.But I shouldn't have had to do that.

Then there's the channel setup.That's a nightmare. The auto scan doesn't work very well, and it assigns channels to weird frequencies.It misses some of the channels and there appears to be no way to recapture them manually.Those channels that are located by the auto scan are not tuned precisely and the manual fine tuning adjustment is very cumbersome, and it must be redone for every frequency.I worked on it for a couple of hours before I had to take a break, and I'm still not even half way done.It might have gone faster if there had been any instructions, but of course, there weren't any.

Several other reviewers noted that this TV won't work with digital cable. I don't know about that because there are no instructions!

There is no contact information included for a technical assistance telephone line. Some of the other reviewers noted that they had called customer assistance. Hooray for them, because there was no contact information included in my package. The company must have been so overwhelmed with customer assistance calls that they stopped giving out the number.

If that were not enough, after all of that, the picture screen died after less than 24 hours of use.That could simply be a sample defect, certainly, but combined with all of the other problems I am very discouraged.Of course, there is no warranty information included and no information of where to send the product for service or exchange, which happens to be the reason why I checked here on line. I still haven't located the contact information, but at least I found this review site where I can warn the world about this stupid set.

All in all, I must say AVOID THIS PRODUCT LIKE THE PLAUGE.

Sony ICF-CD555TV 7-Inch Under-Counter LCD TV/CD Clock Radio Review

(More customer reviews)I have been shopping for several months for an under-cabinet LCD TV to replace our 18-year-old 5" RCA tube-type TV in our kitchen, which has served us well but has developed annoying on/off button problems and now looks old, clunky out-of-date.
Our requirements for a replacement unit were as follows:
1. Small, sleek, unobtrusive, LCD design that would blend in under our white cabinets
2. CD player so my wife could enjoy her books-on-CD in the kitchen(DVD and radio would be a plus but not essential)
3. We wanted to be able to view both local channels as well as satellite channels without needing to also install a DirecTV decoder box (this would take additional space -defeating our compactness goal -- and require more complicated wiring, not to mention monthly charges).
4. Quality (and warranty) that would ensure it would last several years.
5. Price under $500.
6. Given the limited selection and the poor quality reviews on other models, I needed to be able to examine it in person before buying.
I looked at these options:
1. Audiovox VE-1020 (and its older/smaller siblings).It way too pricey at $600-700 and read too many `poor' reviews on audio quality and overall durability.
2. RCA BLC524:Screen too small, and `poor' quality reviews, plus could not find it in a retail store.
3. Motorola/Moxell Tech KA-A13:Sounded good, reliable manufacturer, but could only find its announcement as it is not yet available.
4. Standalone 13" LCD (Gateway, Aquous, Sharp) with a separate swivel mounting bracket.I eliminated this option early because it would be too large, too expensive (~$100 for the bracket alone!), and it most cases would not include a CD player.
I bought the Sony as soon as I found its availability was advertised at a local electronics retail store.Bought it with an inexpensive 5-year extended warranty.
It's been in place for 2 weeks and we *like* it - it is living up to expectations, despite a couple of design flaws -- the absence of which would have earned the unit *five* stars.
First the flaws-all minor:
1. Fit and connections.As an earlier reviewer on this site pointed out, its installation is a tight fit under our cabinets, leaving only about an inch clearance to plug in the coax and a/v connectors.But this was easily remedied by purchasing right-angle adapters (Radio Shack, $4 each) that can be screwed in after installation with the 1" clearance.These redirect the cable and RCA connectors downward, making attaching the cables post-installation easy.Sony would do well to include these right-angle adapters.
2. Installation instructions.The alternative is to connect all your cables *prior* to installing the unit - something the instructions did not point out.In fact, the instructions could be improved in various areas.For instance, while the unit comes with variable-depth spacers so that installation under cabinets with doors that overhang the cabinet bottom,if you have flush-mounted doors (as we do), you *don't* want to use the spacers at all.Well, the instructions don't suggest this option, leaving you to think that the spacers are required in all cases.For me, this meant re-installing without the spacers, a minor hassle.
3. No built-in TV antenna.Unlike our old RCA, this unit does not have a built-in extending-wand antenna.This makes it a *requirement* that you connect TV and/or A/V inputs to another signal source to receive *anything* on the TV.While many people may be planning to do this, it *does* raise the ante on hooking it up.Sony would have a more versatile product for less experienced people if they included an optional "single rabbit ear" antenna that could be plugged into the TV/cable connector.
Now the good features:
1. TV:Sharp, noise-free wide-format picture, with settable options for standard 3x4 picture size and two wide-format variations.Just the right size.When not in used, screen is easily folded into a cavity under the unit and latches mechanically (more securely than magnetically, which may also wear out).
2. Sound:Perfect for TV viewing and CD story listening, and quite decent for FM or CD music, both in volume and fidelity. Two 3" speakers main the sound forward and downward, and the bass extender works as advertised.As long as you don't expect home theatre quality sound from this unit, you should be quite satisfied.
3. CD Player:Quality feel of its slide-out tray.Plays commercial and my home-recorded MP3s flawlessly.
4. Remote:Small, intuitive, well-constructed.Its bottom magnet attaches to our refrigerator nicely.
5. AM/FM presets:5 of each, easily set, with manual tuning buttons on the unit and the remote.
6. TV/Video switch:Easily switches from the antenna/cable input to the a/v inputs.This is important, as the way we wired the unit, it only takes my technology-challenged wife one button click to switch from local channels to satellite channels coming in from our home theatre system.
7. Clock:Intuitive and easily set.
8. Timer:Doubt we will use - or care about -- this feature.
Bottom line:We like it a lot, both how it looks and how it works.The Sony name (and their 1-year manufacturer's warranty) - coupled with the inexpensive 5-year extended warranty we bought - should give us several good years of service...until it is again technologically out-of-date and needs upgrading again!

I actually purchased the "stock" sony model as opposed to the "Liv" version ... It is silver and looks a bit less "hip".

Philips 7-Inch Digital TV Clock Radio AJL750/37 Review

(More customer reviews)The vertical height when the screen frame is down is 9.5 inches. I went to Best Buy and measured it.
I have been researching all of the available under-cabinet TV-clock-radio units, and none seem to provide this specific dimension.

I am looking for one for my home office. I have 7.5" between the bottom of a wall shelving unit and the surface of my desk, which would put the TV at eye level behind and to the right of my computer. That way I can watch my favorite night time shows and still get some work done.

The screen itself is 3 5/8" X 6"; kind of small, but that could be okay if the res is sharp. The BB demo was not hooked up, so I could not evaluate the resolution.

My current setup is a 5 year old BusLink LCD TV connected to my cable hookup through an adapter into the A/V input jack. A wireless headset is also plugged into the TV so that I can walk around the house and still listen to the show.

From this configuration I have learned a few things. The TV needs a direct and firm cable connection. Running it through an adapter into an A/V jack just weakens the signal too much. Sometimes the signal to the BusLink is perfect [only after having run the cable through a Motorola Signal Booster] and sometimes the image and sound are 95% static and snow, usually somewhere in between. Sometimes a slight turn of the connection seems to help; sometimes not. Some channels are better then others. So, a direct and firm cable connection is an absolute necessity.

I have also learned to take a close look at the remote. Most of the under-cabinet pics provided do not show a close-up of the device. My BusLink remote has blisters for buttons. In time, they tend to dry up and pop, making them useless, so that I have to reach forward to the TV itself to, for instance, change to a higher channel (the CH- blister is still intact).

So, the remote must have real buttons that cannot wear out and the coax cable hookup must be built in. This Philips TV seems to have both of those features, but it will not fit into my 7.5 inch vertical space.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this unit to replace a previous Audiovox unit that failed after 2 years. While I preferred not to get another Audiovox due to that experience, there are not a lot of alternatives for an undercounter unit.I considered the Sony much too bulky, and the Philips unit only comes with the iPod slot which I don't want and consider annoying, so it's Audiovox again.After 3 weeks, I am satisfied with the unit. It is much sturdier in construction than the previous unit, and the design is sleek and handsome. The controls are well laid out and intuitive.Picture quality is only fair (using an analog cable input), but acceptable. When viewing a DVD, picture is actually very good, but who watches a DVD in the kitchen?Sound quality is also fair, about what I expected at this price (this is NOT a premium sound system).

Installation was easy, but I installed under a cornet cabinet, or it would have been a challenge.Who knows if this unit will last longer than the previous unit's 2 years, but at half the cost of the Sony, it seems worth the risk.

Sony ICF-CD543RM Kitchen CD Clock Radio (Silver) Review

(More customer reviews)I tried other radios in the kitchen, but none could compare to the sound of this unit. FM reception's pretty good too. The "kitchen friendly" controls are easy to clean. Mounting is done by drilling three holes, for which it has a paper template, and it has adjustable spacers to accommodate cabinets with recessed bottoms. It's about 11-1/2 inches deep and just an inch or two wider.

I don't seem to get any weather band channels, and the TV channels I get are very quiet so I have to remember to turn the sound down before switching to FM or CD. The timer's a nice feature for the kitchen but seconds can't be set and it takes a lot of turning to get to longer bake times, like an hour or more. The magnetic remote's also nice but you have to be able to see the sensor and stay within about 45 degrees for it to work.

Overall I'm very happy with it. The sound is great and makes spending all day around the kitchen less lonely, plus it doesn't take up any counter space. I do feel like I paid a small premium for the name Sony though.
