OK, I know what many people are thinking when they see this. "$120 for an old style radio?" This little radio is amazing and sounds great! The tuner is very sensitive and very well made. This is not like tuning a clock radio, not even close! The whole radio has a high quality feel to it.

The sound quality, although mono, it excellent for this radio. It's not Bose quality, but it's not Bose price either. It will fill a room with clean sound, just don't expect anything window-rattling.

My wife and I are big NPR listeners and we really enjoy this radio. And if you don't like listening to radio all the time, there is an auxiliary port to plug an MP3 player or some other external device.

A great device that you can only appreciate by buying it and seeing for yourself.I also have the Kloss Model One and I prefer this radio to it, but not by much. They are fairly close in performance

Price paid:$180

I like this radio a lot.I am slightly--only slightly--disappointed that the sound is not more impressive. The sound is very good, but not as jaw-dropping as the Bose Wave or other tabletops I've heard.I have trouble finding the right bass/treble setting. But for this price I'm happy with the sound.

The 820HD looks great. It's very modern looking and is not over-buttoned.There are a lot of useful, easy to use functions. You can display the time, radio info or graphic EQ.There are separate bass, treble, and "loudness" controls to suit your taste, but I do have trouble finding the right balance.I use this in my office so I haven't used the alarms or sleep timer.

I haven't had too much trouble tuning in stations, but I'm right in the city so I expect that. The sound quality of HD Radio does vary from station to station--some stations sound thin. This is not a reflection of the radio itself. The HD2 programming is great because it's commercial free (for now).

Overall, I'm happy with this good looking radio.HD Radio is fun and the 820HD also sounds great with my iPod.For the money, it's great.

Did you know there are more than 800 million radio receivers in service in America today? Virtually all these radios operate using analog broadcast/reception technology that dates back to the 1960s. Today, thousands of radio stations are upgrading their broadcast technology; hundreds are currently broadcasting with digital HD Radio technology. New HD Radio technology enables AM and FM radio stations to broadcast their programs digitally for superior FM and AM sound. Not to be confused with subscription-based radio, the Cambridge Soundworks 820HD can receive both AM/FM analog and digital radio stations that are free of charge. What HD digital radio provides is FM stations now with CD-quality sound, AM stations now with FM-quality sound - all with crystal-clear reception with virtually no audio distortion. Another benefit of digital radio is the radio station's ability to transmit additional information along with the music signal. Simultaneously, one station can offer several audio channels as well as on-screen data. You can see the song title and performer. News channels might offer financial and traffic updates viewable on your radio display. In a sense HD does to radio what HD does to TV. It makes it better to use and enjoy. Since HD Radio is a free broadcast, all you have to do is get a new HD Radio and the Cambridge Soundworks Radio 820HD is the best HD table radio available. And you'll continue to enjoy the same radio programming but it will sound better than you've ever heard before. Nextplay Fashion iPod Docking Clock Radio - NP109CR Review

We bought this alarm clock for our daughter. We didn't get it on Amazon, but I was so put off by this product that I decided to leave a review here anyway. We originally thought it was really cool when we opened it because it came with tons of accessory "docks" to fit almost all types of iPods. It has a couple of major flaws though.

1. When the alarm goes off it starts at a low volume and then within 5 seconds it's blaring as loud as the volume can go. It does this in all modes (Radio, iPod, Buzzer). There is no way to change this and you can't effect it by adjusting the volume before the alarm goes off.

2. It has an Audio Out port on the back for attaching headphones, other equipment, etc. The only problem is, when you connect the headphones sound still comes out of the speakers too. To me, this is a major flaw.

I'll be trying to return this product to the store as soon as I can find the box. It took us a week or two to discover these flaws, so hopefully the store will take it back.

TEAC R2W Premium Edition AM/FM Mono Clock/Radio (White) Review

TEAC R2W Premium Edition AM/FM Mono Clock/Radio

They are wonderful! I bought an extra one for my living room!

In case you haven't seen the photos, these are the units with the handle on the left side of the unit (from the front) with a round blue display on the right side of the face. They have a single speaker but the sound quality is superb. You can get a powerful sound out of them. I don't have any issues with the "click" settings for the volume - for me the change is gradual enough that I get the volume level I want. They really are solid pieces - metal cases with a powder-coat finish and solid rubber feet - just a very quality look and feel to them. They can be set for two separate alarms, and you can hook up an MP3 player, etc up to them for playback. The cord for this is included but is only about 6". I'd say radio reception is average - the same as I get from my other radios, and fine for me. I'm going to also use the second unit as an auxiliary speaker for my laptop. AND they have a built-in backup battery unit that is always charged up when it's plugged in. You can completely disengage the cord and use it as a portable radio out on the deck! One thing-if you need it really dark for sleeping you may not like these - the display is a pretty blue but gives off enough light that you don't want it facing you - it's pretty much a night light. The settings are straightforward but you do need to follow the instruction manual.

I checked them out at other vendors and they "list" for $169. They actually are even cheaper now than when I bought them - just under $50 from North Star Electronics through Amazon as of 01-23-2006. The rules say I can't list the URLs but you may want to look for the "no picture" listing for this better price!

Michael Graves Kitchen CD Stereo Clock Radio Review

My review is based on a refurbished product that I won in an online auction for much lower price. I am very satisfied with the product considering the amount I have paid for it. But, I am giving only 3 stars considering the real price of the product.
It is true that the mounting template that comes with the product is wrong. I had to make my own template. However, the mounting hardware includes three sets of spacers and two sets of screws that you can use in any combination to suit to your cabinet. Mine worked very well and is quite stable. I like the fact that it does not occupy any space on my kitchen counter top.
My wife said that the CD didn't work at one point. Then when I checked it, it was working fine. FM reception is not satisfactory. One of our favorite stations is not picked up. Manual says that the power cable should be stretched (I believe it acts as antenna), but I don't like the cable hanging all over the kitchen counter.
The instruction manual could be improved. Product is much bulkier for the sound it produces. There is a holder for the remote control at the bottom. It is still not clear to me as to how I can place the remote in the holder. (Manual says nothing about this.) The way I have put it now makes the buttons on the remote press against the bottom surface of the product. You must use only the remote control to utilize some of the features such as setting the presets.
Overall, I like the product, but they could have done a much better job.

Naxa NR-716 Blue AM/FM Portable Mini Alarm Clock Radio w/Earphones

I have owned many dozens of radios. I just received this Naxa NX-716. The first thing I noticed that all the components were really cheap (battery door, belt clip, volume control) and from experience, I know they won't last long. But the big - and I mean big - problem is the tuning. Although it is digital, it has an old style tuning wheel. For whatever reason (probably because it is a piece of junk) it only plays the most powerful stations. In other words if I go from the lowest frequency to the highest I only receive about five stations (as opposed to over 20 on any other decent radio. I will never be able to report on battery life because I will never use this piece of garbage again. A true loser. The junky earbuds fit my other pocket job, so I can probably salvage something out of this mess. I knew it was cheap going in, but I never knew a company would release something on this very low level. With batteries installed, I guess it could pass as a light paper weight, but that's about all you get. By the way, it looks very thin in the photo - not so thin. From front to back of clip, it's over an inch thick. And the reason they don't show an enlarged image is that all those fancy buttons on the front do very little - five are for the clock, one turns the power off, one turns FM radio on and the last one turns AM power on. What a joke! And just one last kick in the pants - I ordered black and got blue.

The feature of never having to set this clock is, needless to say, pretty cool. The date and day of the week are also helpful. The indoor temperature is less helpful -- my heading and A/C pretty much take care of that.
The one thing I find irritating about this clock is that it has a very small viewable angle. That is, if you look at it from more than, say 25 degrees off the normal, all of the digit segments are about equally dark, making the time impossible to read.I'm sure the clock would be nice on a desktop, but on the wall it's not so helpful.

Acoustic Research Tabletop Radio with Docking Station for iPod and MP3 Players

When I saw this product on the AR web site, I was immediately interested because it was a TABLE RADIO, for goodness sakes, with tube technology.I'm an audiophile and I currently own an integrated amp with tubes, and absolutely love the sound it creates.I am extremely pleased with the performance of this radio; it BLOWS AWAY the silly Bose Wave for half the price, and an iPod dock with two additional inputs to boot. The tuner is the best I've seen in years, and the remote is nice. The only caution is that the amplifier section is so powerful that it can overdrive the little speakers at high volumes creating distortion, but that occurs at the point where it's really loud.If you want a nice table radio with versatile, usable features and great sound, this is definitely it!

Uniden 100-Channel Clock Radio Scanner

This is a very good scanner. The instructions are not exactly "clear as a bell", but if you've ever had a scanner before you should be able to get the gist of the operation. {To program, press PGM, enter the frequency and the memory location you want, then press PGM again.}When it is in the search mode, you can press the "bank number" (1-10) and enable/disable that bank. You can enter 10 frequencies per bank, you can set one frequency per bank as a priority channel. The weather band and tv/fm radio bands work ok.I love the fact that it runs on the batteries when unplugged, and then when you plug it in it switches over to ac power - although you're not quite sure which it's running from since there's no indication. The alarm is a bit on the weak side, but then you're probably not buying it to be an alarm clock.

The Uniden Clock Radio Scanner is a multi-featured conventional channel scanner allowing you to store and then scan up to 100 channels distributed over 10 banks. If you know exactly what you want, direct channel access let's you quickly dial in to your favorite channel. For faster scanning, you can even use a channel/frequency lockout function to skip over stored frequencies.
This clock radio scanner has all the functions of regular radio/alarm clock. The scanner, in standby mode, displays the time. The alarm clock can sound up to 20 minutes or be shut off manually. A convenient snooze button lets you silent the alarm for an extra five minutes.

Sangean PR-D7 AM/FM Digital Rechargeable Portable Radio Review

Sangean PR-D7 AM/FM Digital Rechargeable Portable Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently read analysis of the Sangean PR-D5 vs. the Sangean PR-D7 radios. The reviews missed the point:These two Sangean radios target different market niches and needs. The PR-D5 is essentially a table radio while the PR-D7 targets folks that need a radio for domestic travel.I'm sure the engineers at Sangean see it this way.Why not buy both radios?

The Sangean PR-D7 has a clean crisp sound with very low noise floor on AM and FM bands, a great improvement over Sangean radios of similar size such as the ATS-505 or the ATS-909.BTW, I've tuned in all the major stations in the greater Phoenix area without a problem including the hard to catch 89.5, a classical station.

I have been very surprised at the overall performance of the PR-D7 radio and listen to this radio on a daily basis. The Sangean PR-D7 ($59) does 90 percent of what the Trivoli Songbook does at 25 percent of the Songbook's $200 price tag.

Still, the PR-D7 could use a multi-voltage AC adapter and a lock switch to be a complete global travel radio (like the Sangean ATS-606).Also, when traveling, cloth pouch would be a really nice touch. And while I'm making my wish list, the PR-D7 in a red or yellow case would be neat and easy to spot in a hotel room so you don't leave it behind.

One of the things I like about this radio are the controls, easy to learn and use, plus you can see the frequency and time on the display.

Update September 2008:I just recently purchased Sanyo's Eneloop AA rechargeable batteries for my PR-D7 giving me greater flexibility whenenjoying this wonderful portable radio.I highly recommend Sanyo's Eneloop batteries.

Last week, from my greater Phoenix location, I picked KNX 1070 Los Angeles about 10PM in the evening.

Update October 2009: After owning this radio for 2 years, my little PR-D7 fell off a second story balcony and is now in pieces, so I ordered a second PR-D7 this morning.I suffer from cancer and kidney disease, so I've been in and out of the hospital several times this year, each time, my little Sangean PR-D7 went with me.

One of the neatest features of this PR-D7 is the no hassle recharging of the AA batteries, the radio automatically does this for you!!!

BTW, I ordered this radio from Amazon on a Friday morning and received the radio the next Tuesday morning. How's that for service!!!

SANGEAN WR-11 AM/FM Table Top Radio Review

SANGEAN WR-11 AM/FM Table Top Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this radio for my 84 year old understandably technophobic Mother.Simplicity was the order of the day.Old fashioned knobs and station indicator fit the bill perfectly. The receiver section is pretty good.My Mother lives in a rural area where most major markets are 60+ miles away.FM stations from as far away as 35-45 miles pulled in with simple wire antenna that is include and all of the AM stations that were tradionally available in her area were received with good quality.

Speaking for myself, the audio has too much bass.Combine that with the absence of a simple tone knob to allow the user to change the bass/treble balance leaves me scratching my head and wondering what the people of Sangean were thinking when they decided a tone knob wasn't necessary.I might be tempted to plug the bass port on the back of the radio with something to see if that cuts down the amount of bass output if I had bought it for myself. It's not for critical music listening but isn't bad for background music and listening to the news.

But it made my Mom happy to have a radio that she knows how to use.And the audio quality deficiency doesn't bother her. When she was a kid audio quality from electronics was crappy. For this purchase, the 3 star rating reflects my Mother's positive comments minus my critical remarks about audio quality.

Surely they can find a spot for a tone knob.

Boston Acoustics HSOLOMDNT Horizon Solo AM/FM Radio With Auxiliary Input (Midnight) Review

Boston Acoustics HSOLOMDNT Horizon Solo AM/FM Radio With Auxiliary Input
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had my Horizon Solo for a week now and can say that it's a huge leap better than its older brother the Recepter and the Tivoli Songbook and the Sangean WR-2, which I sold and replaced with my Horizon Solo.

Here is where the Horizon Solo shines:

1. Its AM/FM tuner is on steroids. Most of the time I don't even have to elevate the FM wire antenna to get hard-to-get Los Angeles stations such as 89.3, 88.9, and 103.1. The FM blows away the more expensive Tivoli Songbook and Sangean WR-2.
2. The AM tuner sounds like stereo with no background noise. This is truly amazing. The AM is far better than my very good Sangean WR-2.

3. The speakers are bigger and fuller than the already good-sounding Recepter and bear in mind the Horizon Solo is fifty dollars less.

4. The interface is easy to use. Like the Recepter, you use a rotary dial to tune up or down while scrolling through the 20 presets.

5. The radio is relatively small and leaves a small footprint on your bedside table.

6. Unlike the more expensive Recepter, the Horizon Solo has a headphone jack in the front.

7. The AC cord is two-prong and small in size, not one of those big fat wall-warts that take up half your available outlets.

8. Holding the bezel dial, you can't "twist" the radio into the horizontal or vertical position.

9. Marketed as a "custom" radio, the front grill can be removed and replaced with loud vibrant colors though truth be told I'm happy the with the dark "midnight" color.

Yes, I do notice a couple of bugs in my new model. Twice after turning off the radio, the radio was still on so I had to turn it off a second time. Also the time display is five minutes slow while listening to the radio and then when you turn the radio off the time is accurate again. I don't know if this is a bug particular to my radio or a general problem.

Bottom-line: As a radio enthusiast, I own over 50 radios and I will go out on a limb and say this is the best AM/FM clock radio I have ever purchased. In a market where clock radios usually have substandard reception or where the better radios cost $150-200, the Horizon Solo is the new champion on the block.

Update: Bought another Horizon Solo for my work office, an environment hampered by electronic interference and the Horizon Solo is doing very well, picking up Los Angeles stations 88.1, 103.1, 89.9 91.5 and other FM stations with outstanding clarity. My officemates are so impressed, they want to get one also.

Another Update: After 3 months, my second Solo got frozen on the 17 increment of volume control. After much experimentation, I discovered that the only way to "unfreeze" the volume is to unplug the unit for several minutes and then plug it in again. I hope I don't have to do this again or at least not often.

Nine months later it continues to be my favorite radio. The volume control can also be de-activitated by holding lowering volume to ZERO; then you hold the on button until the radio beeps; then you increase the volume to full blast or whatever limit you want. Then you turn off radio and turn on again. Boston Acoustics sent me these instructions after I contacted them. Since I've done this, the problem is gone.

Sony Under-Cabinet Kitchen ICF-CDK50 CD/Clock Radio (Silver) Review

Sony Under-Cabinet Kitchen ICF-CDK50 CD/Clock Radio

(More customer reviews)
I have been looking for an inexpensive radio for my work bench for quite a while. What I really wanted was an AM/FM radio that I could mount out of the way and that also supported an input for my MP3 player.I was starting to think that no such item existed until I came across this radio - so I bought it and mounted it under my work bench.

The sound quality is good for a radio in this price range and there is a handy battery backup for whenever the power gets cut momentarily (which is fairly common out there just because I'm always dinking around with stuff).I also love that my MP3 player hooks up so easily, which gives me acces to pretty much all my music when I don't feel like listening to the radio.I kind of doubt I will ever use the CD player.

Unfortunately, I immediately found that the quality of the FM reception was so poor I couldn't stand to listen to it (AM was fine). After a couple of days of playing around with the position of the power cord, I realized that the problem was feedback from the battery charger for my cordless drill that is plugged into the same outlet.Once I realized that, I changed how everything is plugged in and now the FM reception is very good :).It's too bad this doesn't just have an external FM antenna so people don't run into this problem - I docked a star just for this reason.

I'll make one more comment about the more expensive version of this radio, the ICF-CDK70.When I was having all the reception issues, I thought I'd go give that one a try and I realized that this model (ICF-CDK50) is better in pretty much every way as long as you don't care about the CD changer. The ICF-CDK70 is bulkier, it does NOT have a battery backup, it still has the FM antenna in the power cord, it uses the same speakers, and it doesn't have the handy preset buttons for radio stations. In some ways, I can't believe they call it an upgrade! If you are considering one of these, I highly recommend sticking with this model.

Overall, I'm very happy with this purchase.

Sangean RCR-5 Digital AM/FM Clock Radio Review

Sangean RCR-5 Digital AM/FM Clock Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have nothing but praise for the Sangean RCR-5 clock radio.Specifically, here are the most noteworthy aspects of this truly amazing product:

Display
Here is where the RCR-5 truly shines, as it incorporates a backlit LCD with adjustable intensity:one may adjust the backlight to suit your needs, so you have a perfectly legible, yet not too bright display (at night) which can never be "washed out", even in direct sunlight. The display even has a clever feature whereby it will illuminate to full intensity when any of the buttons are pressed, after which it returns to the user's preset intensity after ten seconds. As you can see from the product photos, the display is of a soft, warm color, most conducive to a good sleeping environment; other clock radios using bright blue or green illumination, IMHO, should be avoided if you want to get any sleep.

Auxiliary Input
Very useful for listening to my podcasts at night; when an external source is attached, the Band button will cycle through AM/FM/AU; when none is attached, only AM/FM are available, thereby eliminating "clutter" for those who do not wish to enable this feature.(Note:I'm old-school, and prefer using this method over a "Dockable" iPod solution, as I prefer to completely run my iPod's battery source to zero before recharging...)

Flexibility in Programming
Only found on more expensive clock radios, this model will allow you to use the "Sleep" feature to listen to a particular station (or podcast with the Auxiliaryfeature) at night, and then to wake to radio on a different station. In addition, all alarms allow Daily, Mon-Fri, or Single, with the Audible Alarm using a gentle "ramp-up" feature.

Reception and Speaker Quality
The radio's receiver portion of this product is very good, rivaled by only my Sony short wave receiver (a great radio, by the way!); what looks like a 3-inch speaker provides a very warm, intelligible output, very suitable for the spoken word, adequate for music. If you need a strong system for powerful music, I would suggest purchasing an additional desktop speaker setup (such as for a computer) which can be attached to the headphone output by means of a standard mini-jack connection.

Finally, a no-nonsense Sleep function
Sangean has cleverly incorporated the Sleep function into the Power button (which is gently illuminated when the radio's off); to turn the radio on or off, press the button. To use the Sleep feature, press and hold the same button to select up to 120 minutes.Simple, effective, "it just works".

Final Recommendation
Well, what more can I say? This product works for me (and I'm purchasing three more for gifts) and has a lot going for it, including high value (very reasonably priced!).Is there anything that you should be aware of?Yes:

>As described in the previous customer's entry, setting the alarm may require a few extra key-strokes, as this product offers many options when it comes to waking by either the alarm or the radio; if you do not need all of these features, you may wish to consider something of simpler means. That being said, it took me only about 22 seconds to set the alarm; for me, it was relatively intuitive and logical.

>The built-in battery back up feature only works for about ten minutes worth of backup, according to the manual; in my neck of the woods, this is not a big issue, but should be noted if you experience many nighttime blackouts where you are located.

>Even though this model is referred to as an "RCR-5", it should be noted that it does not employ an automatic time synchronization feature as is found on Sangean's higher end clock radios.(Not a big issue for me, and may actually be desirable for those of us who prefer to set our clocks 5, 10, or 15 minutes fast to "keep us on time"!)

I hope this helps you in making the right decision! All the best!

Sony ICF-C218 Automatic Time Set Clock Radio (White) Review

What I like about this alarm clock: doesn't take up much room on my nightstand, the time is preset at the factory so all I had to do was set my time zone, the alarm doesn't jolt you awake - it starts out slow and quieter gradually getting faster and louder, you can choose how long you want your snooze to be, and it is so easy to figure out - I first saw this item at Target and was able to figure it out right there while displayed, quite a few of the others baffled me.

Other info: only one alarm time can be set
