12-BAND AM/FM/Lwith SW1-9 Highly Sensitive Multi-band Radio Review

12-BAND AM/FM/Lwith SW1-9 Highly Sensitive Multi-band Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I know this is an inexpensive radio but I still expected more than delivered.
Cons:
1. Display screen was badly stained/clouded underneath the protective plastic.
2. Tuning on the AM band was off by 5-6 Khz.
3. Large gaps in housing seams (two pcs of the body didn't fit together well at all).
4. Reception of both AM and FM bands was quite poor.
5. Takes 2-AAA batteries, not 2-AA like the description states.
6. I returned mine for the above reasons, mostly 1 and 2.

Pros:
1. Very cool looking radio, the design sold it.

Summary:
Not recommended as it appears this radio is a good example of "you get what you pay for" and I expected more.

Tivoli Audio Model One AM / FM Table Radio, Classic / Walnut Review

Tivoli Audio Model One AM / FM Table Radio, Classic / Walnut
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Several years ago I inherited a KLH 21--the inspiration for Henry Kloss' current Tivoli Model One.It is among my most cherished possessions, but sentiment aside--this radio is an advancement of the KLH "original" in nearly every aspect.

Audio tonal quality is much like "beauty"--it's in the eye (or ear) of the beholder.Considering the price and genre of this radio--I consider its audio fidelity to be exceptional--powerful and very pleasing.I prefer its design objective that incorporates ONE superior amp and speaker--opposed to TWO lesser channels for stereo.I've never been able to rationalize a "stereo" design where the speakers are separated by only eight-inches of face-plate!

FM RECEPTION:I own way more than my fair share of radios. Is this product on par with the classic $1500-dollar McIntosh MR-78?Not at all, but remember--Amazon is asking you for a mere $120 to own this radio.Within all reasonable considerations--FM performance is excellent.I suspect the criticism of FM reception you read here is due to a couple factors that are not the fault of this radio.First, NO GOOD FM TUNER can tell the difference between a weak distant station and all the "RF trash" generated within your environment by computers, "smart" appliances, and security systems. In fact, a superior tuner is MORE prone to such interference.Secondly, EVERY GOOD FM TUNER requires a good antenna--lose that included 12-inch "rat tail".I use a C Crane "FM Reflect" tuned wire dipole which terminates directly into the 75-ohm coaxial external antenna connector on this radio.FM sensitivity, selectivity, and capture ratio are very good.I routinely receive distant signals with good quality, and I have NEVER seen this radio overload from a strong local signal at a reasonable distance from its transmitter.

AM RECEPTION:My major criticism of this product is ironically my major accolade!Out of the box, this radio is unresponsive to all but the most powerful AM signals, and it IS NOT equally sensitive across the full 540-1700kHz band. This deficiency CAN be rectified with a $40 addition of the Terk "AM Advantage" inductively-coupled loop antenna.Set it atop or beside this radio, and the AM reception character changes dramatically.Maybe there is a "blessing" in this design--as there are NO "whistles", intermod, or overloading apparent on this radio's AM band reception! With the exception of a very few (and expensive) specialty receivers--the Model One provides the finest AM audio I have found in a mass-market radio. If your option for music lies on AM, you will be very pleased with this radio!

My favorite feature is the very smooth 5:1 geared ANALOG rotary tuning. It's generally accurate, and the wide bandspread and variable-intensity tuning light make it a joy to use.Analog tuning is technically superior in EVERY respect to today's commonplace "digital" tuning.Inconvenient?Maybe ever so slightly, but worth the minimal effort.

FINE PRODUCT... An easy FIVE-STAR recipient!

Product Description:
Where performance and simplicity are paramount but space is sparse, the Model One table radio fits the bill. With just three knobs, it is the antithesis of today's ever more complex electronic products. The Model One gets more stations than other radios because of its state of the art, Henry Kloss designed discrete-component FM tuner using technology originally developed for cellular telephones. This technology gives better FM reception and increased clarity on closely spaced stations. Features include a furniture-grade, handmade walnut wood cabinet that doubles as an acoustically inert housing and a heavy-magnet, long-throw 3-inch speaker which provides musically accurate tonal balance and bass response. Its large analog tuning knob with geared-down 5:1 tuning ratio permits easy and accurate tuning. The amber tuning indicator lets you know when you've achieved proper tuning. Built-in AM and FM antennas provide satisfying reception, while a rear 75-ohm jack allows connection of an external FM antenna in difficult reception areas. Also provided is a headphone jack, auxiliary input to connect an iPod, MP3 player or portable CD player, and a record output for recording, or to use the Model One as a high-quality outboard tuner.

Boston Acoustics HDUOMDNT Horizon Duo Speaker System (Midnight) Review

Boston Acoustics HDUOMDNT Horizon Duo Speaker System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I already own two Boston Acoustic Horizon Solos, which I bought on Amazon for about $85. One is in the bedroom and the other is in the workout room. My friend urged me to get the two-speaker Duo, so I finally capitulated and use it in the kitchen. My review will be based on my comparison between the $85 Solo and the $115 Duo.

Speaker Sound: The Duo wins. While I love the Solo's full high-fidelity sound, the Duo speakers really fill the kitchen with ease.

AM Reception: I'd have to give a slight nod to the Duo. In the kitchen I had to rotate the Solo to fine-tune 570AM. I don't have to touch the Duo. This is fortunate because the size and shape of it make it impractical for rotating the radio to maximize AM reception from its internal ferrite antenna.

FM Reception: The Solo wins. Probably they get equal FM, but the stereo speakers on the Duo highlight background static more easily. This is only a problem once in a while when I listen to 89.3 KPCC. I'd still give the Duo an A minus grade on FM.

Remote: The Duo has one and the Solo does not.

Ease of use: The remote on the Duo allows you to bypass the toggle mode switch on the radio. Some people don't like changing the mode by hand. But on the Solo you toggle your presets, whether they're AM or FM, in the same preset mode, so you don't really miss the remote.

Conclusion: These are both great radios for their price point. For a bedside radio, I'd go with the Solo because it takes up less space and you can rotate it easier to optimize AM reception. The Solo is loud enough for big rooms as well and its speaker isn't as prone to static as much as the Duo's.So on balance I think most people will be better served getting the $85 Solo, which I give an A grade. The $115 Duo gets an A minus because of occasional FM static on weak stations.

UPDATE: JULY 14, 2009:

I own two Duos, one bought in September of 2008 and one bought in March of 2009. Both had to be returned because the AM stopped working. This may be due to the intense heat generated by these radios even when the radios are turned off. The replacement radios (I had to pay $20 for shipping) generate the same heat and I fear their AM will fizzle out as well. This is a real shame. While this is the best sounding radio I've ever owned, its heat and AM problem compels me to tell consumers to stay away from the Duo.

In contrast, the smaller version, the BA Horizon Solo is great. I own two and in the last year and a half I've had no problems. Get the cheaper Solo. Great mono speaker sound and better reliability than the Duo.

Homedics HMDX-C20 Speaker Dock for iPod with AM/FM Clock Radio and Nature Sounds, Silver Review

Homedics HMDX-C20 Speaker Dock for iPod with AM/FM Clock Radio and Nature Sounds, Silver
Average Reviews:

Features I like:

*sound options!I can fall asleep or wake up to nature sounds, my iPod, radio, or alarm.

*size and shape -- smaller, more stylish than the clunky, traditional rectangular clock radios, and so it fits nicelyon my small nightstand

*iPod docking station can be modified with the various inserts included to accommodate any type of iPod.

*3 settings for the back lighting on the time -- bright, slightly less bright, and "off" -- a big plus for those who don't like the glare of the clock radio in the middle of the night.I use the "off" setting for the weekends . . . then I know that I really don't have to get up!Yaayy!

Only problem with the "off" setting is that you can only see the time in a light room, not in a dark room.I don't like the light, but I also am one of those people who needs to glance at the time during the night. I have always remedied the problem of excessive glare by draping a small piece of sheer colored fabric across the front of any clock radio that I've ever owned . . . softens the light but I can still see the time.

The one feature I don't like:

* mirror-like finish shows every dang fingerprint and smudge!A little artistry is required when wiping clean or you will inadvertently click on the buttons and change your settings.

All in all, not a bad clock radio! If they could just tweak it a bit (like making a dimmer setting that would be genuinely dim but still show the time in a dark room, and losing the smudge-prone finish) it might be a near perfect product.

I bought this clock for my daughter after I had received a different projection clock as a gift.My daughter really likes the on-ceiling display of the clock. The only drawbacks:the projection device does not swivel left and right. That would help in positioning the on-ceiling display a little better. Also, you must set the projection clock separate from the regular clock-radio clock.Other than that, I would recommend.

Philips AJ3600 Time Projection Clock Radio Review

I just received this clock yesterday and have already fallen in love!

To avoid hitting the snooze or reset button(s) and never waking up, I keep my alarm clock across the room from my bed. This way I wake up enough to get out of bed and walk across the room before I hit any buttons. As my eyes are getting older it has become increasingly more difficult to focus on the clock when I wake up in the middle of the night.

When I decided that a projection clock would solve my problem of focusing on the clock in the middle of the night, I started to look around for one and I was not pleased with what was out there.I did not need nature sounds, nor did I need a light to turn on as part of the alarm.I do not have an MP3 player to dock into my clock, and I do not need a complete weather report when I open my eyes (LOL, I will find that out soon enough when I shlep out of bed and let the dogs outside!).I do not need to know what time the alarm is set (Ijust like to be reassured that it is on), and I am perfectly capable of pressing a few buttons to set the time all by myslef.

This little guy projects the time and whether or not the alarm is on...the two things that I am most interested in when I open my eyes in the middle of the night. The projection can be moved 180 degrees and the further away you project the time, the larger it is.It has an adjustable backlight on the face so it is not too bright. It has an AM/FM radio with ten station presets, and when the alarm is set to chime instead of the radio, it starts gentle so as not to jar you awake. It does have two alarms, but instead of having a choice of alarm types (chime or radio) Alarm 1 uses the radio and Alarm 2 uses the chime. The chime is a little bit quieter than I am used to, but it woke me up just fine this morning.

So far (after one night) I love this clock, it's a great price, and I would defiantly recommend it!
