Cue Radio Model r1 Table Radio with iPhone/iPod Dock and Dual Alarms (White) Review

I have owned my Cue Radio Model r1 Table Radio for seven months and absolutely love it!The sound quality of this unit is impeccable.I primarily use the radio at my office, but its compact size and portability have allowed me to take it with me on trips as well. The radio came along on my most recent ski trip and drew the rave reviews of my friends, who were amazed at how this small device filled a large room with rich, beautiful sound. In addition to listening to broadcast radio, I use the r1 to play my iPod and Sony MiniDisc player, and the radio functions smoothly and effortlessly under all formats. The sound that the r1 produces with my acoustic rock MD recordings, in particular, is nothing short of stunning. The radio's operation is intuitive, the AM/FM tuner is far stronger than the Sony boom box I formerly used in my office, and the display is easy to read.I have become addicted to glancing at the song and artist tags whenever I hear a new song.In short, the r1 is an outstanding table radio, and I would strongly recommend it to anyone who appreciates amazing sound.Enjoy!

GenevaSound S HiFi Docking Station with FM and Alarm for iPod/iPhone (Black) Review

GenevaSound S HiFi Docking Station with FM and Alarm for iPod/iPhone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Geneva Lab is known for setting an early high fidelity sound standard for iPod docking speaker systems, and their latest little tabletop device does not disappoint. It offers a surprisingly rich sound from such a small box, and it has a very simple and elegant design that balances nicely with the aesthetics of the iPods it is designed for -- I've got a couple of nanos and an iPod touch, and it works great with all of them. It's about 5 inches tall, nearly double that wide and 7 inches deep, and comes in white, black or red.Just the size for a desk or a dresser -- it would fit nicely and look good in an office or a bedroom or kitchen.I've got the white one and I like the way it looks on my dresser. It's almost an insult to call it a "dock" -- it is much more elegant than almost anything on the market, and unlike most of the docks available at the big chains it has a solid heft to it (it's about 7 pounds), clearly designed with quality in mind. What I like even more is the way that it fills the room with sound -- I've had a couple of iPod docks before and neither nearly as nice as this one, and none came close to the range and depth of sound as this one delivers easily.Admittedly, neither cost this much either, but with GenevaSound you're paying for what seems to me a nice balance of form and function. The reason to buy an iPod (over cheaper mp3 players) is that you value simplicity, elegance, and great sound -- and if you value those things, the Geneva S delivers, and while it's not inexpensive it's not cheap either.

Speaking of functions, it's not just an iPod dock.Like any dock it can play from and charge your iPod.But it's also an FM radio with a digital tuner; plus it doubles as an alarm clock that you can set to wake you up to your favorite song on the iPod; there's also a stereo mini plug for auxiliary input. One minor oddity -- owing probably to the fact that these things were designed in Switzerland -- is that the clock won't do standard 12 hour time - it's set to 24 hour military and can't be changed.Another minor annoyance is that it comes with just a single adapter, for iPhones, and while the dock will take most standard adapters for various iPod sizes, it's a bit of a pain to seat them and to remove them once you've seated them. The manual says just to click them in gently, but I find that when I tried to seat my adapter the mount kept trying to flip over, and it took a bit of doing to get it to click in there.Still that's a fairly minor thing, since once you have it in you're not likely to need to bother again.Since I've got a few different kinds of iPods I decided just to take off my adapter and mount things directly without them. That means there's a bit more wiggle room for the iPod, but since most iPod functions can be controlled from the remote or on the system panel, there's no need to touch it once it's mounted. The dock itself swivels closed when not in use but swivels open when you hit the mode button. The system as a whole can be set directly on a flat surface, on its four little rubber pads, or can be attached to an included silvery stand that elevates it about 3 more inches.

There's a metallic grating that covers the dual speaker system in the box, and a red LCD display shows through the grating on the upper right hand of the box.The display shows the time, or the radio station, whether the alarm is set or not; it indicates the volume when you change it - on a scale from 1 to 100 - and indicates treble and bass values - that range from -6.0 to +6.0; it also indicates which function you've switched to when you change, say, from the radio to the iPod as source for your sound. The coolest feature, though, is the touch sensitive controls on the top of the box. When you touch the region in the upper right hand corner of the top, it lights up to look just like an older generation iPod, complete with back and forward and menu buttons, a power button, and a scroll wheel for volume. These buttons actually control the iPod itself when you have it docked. All of these functions and more (e.g. bass and treble control, programmable radio stations) can be controlled through the remote, but since I tend to misplace my remotes I find it comforting that most of what you need to do with this dock can be done with buttons on the unit itself - one of my pet peeves is dvd players and other devices that can't be properly controlled from the player itself without the remote, but in this case most everything can be done from the touch controls on the device.

But what about the sound? Obviously this is the most important feature, and the GenevaSound S performs well here -- I was kind of hoping for a more expansive, deeper, sound but it is better than anything of this size that I've tried. The basic design of the Geneva speakers is built around what they call "Embracing Sound" - which means, basically that there is a closely spaced set of dual speakers, and that manages to fill the room with a stereo sound. In this case there are two 3" full range woofers, each with a capacity of 15 watts.I was surprised to notice that there is a genuine left to right depth to the sound, and I didn't expect that out of such a small system. The levels are quite good, too -- at least in a small room, and especially if you're not the kind to "blow it out."You're not going to be able to run a house party with this little box - and I find that the sound it delivers is at its highest quality when you have the volume up to about 60 on a scale of 1 to 100. Much higher than that and I began to detect minor imperfections, and an occasional rattle. At 100 it is extremely loud, but for most types of music I've listened to the speakers seem to show their limits at that level. After a few tests, I decided to keep it more in its medium range.Still, for my bedroom and my office, which is where I've mostly had a chance to try this out, it delivers more than enough sound. At 60 it is quite loud enough in my room and I wouldn't dream of going louder than about 40 in my office. Even in my living room, the medium level is more than adequate for ambient music.

About the video: I created a little stop motion animation of the process of opening the box, to show what it comes with and how it's packaged, and after that I have a brief video demonstration of a few of its major features. Most of my review is here, and the video is intended as just a quick illustration.Obviously, there's no way to give any real sense for the sound of this device in a video review since it would only sound as good as YOUR speakers.

To sum up: the GenevaSound S looks great, and sounds good for such a small system; highly recommended for those who want a compact and elegant sound solution for a small to medium-sized room, and especially for those who subscribe to William Morris's principle that you should "have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful."If you need it really loud and immersive, though, with soul shaking bass and immersive sound, you should probably look elsewhere (or get a bigger one, like the GenevaSound L).

Product Description:
From the Swiss firm that first introduced luxury audio fidelity for iPod systems comes the new GenevaSound S - bringing great sound, style and simplicity to the bedroom, kitchen, office and more. GenevaSound S sounds better and does more than any single-function iPod dock on the market, some of which cost 30% to almost 100% more. With more features than single-function docks, GenevaSound S includes the new PowerDock connector, new TouchLight controls, and a digital radio tuner with alarm clock. TouchLight controls are invisible until a hand reaches for the cabinet. Not just eye-catching, it offers extensive control of the iPod menu. (Competitors have limited iPod controls.) When the iPod/iPhone is removed, the motorized PowerDock spins closed and the protruding iPod/iPhone 30-pin connector, a sensitive part, disappears into the cabinet, protecting it from damage and dust. GenevaSound S also comes with a table stand, allowing the user the choice of elevating the system, so it takes up less space on a nightstand, a counter or a desk. The digital radio and programmable alarm make it the best-sounding, simplest iPod clock radio ever, a product segment littered with low-fi sound and eyesore design. It's the first with solid stereo sound and fine design lines.

Grace Wifi Radio (ITC-IR1000B) Review

Grace Wifi Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been listening to internet radio for more than 5 years, and have been exploring the purchase of a stand-alone wifi radio for the last two.The market has either been high-end ($300+ for the Roku Soundbridge or the Revo Pico), products with flaws (check the reviews for the Torian InFusion) or not a true standalone device (requiring that your computerbe on, works only with open networks, etc.).
When I saw the Grace Wifi Radio at the $170 pricepoint,I decided to give it a try.I opened the box about an hour ago,and within 10 minutes had it set up,working with my WPA protected AirPort network. Sound is good;this isn't hifi, but like 90% of internet listeners I'm no high-end audiophile. The stations available through the Reciva server simply blow my mind (think thousands instead of the hundreds I normally look through on iTunes). I can see myself playing with this for weeks, cranking the dial like a kid with his first shortwave.
Note this is a very simple radio; only 5 presets,no equalizer, no dancing visuals, no ipod dock..... And I haven't tested its capability to play audiofiles sent by iTunes(that's not what I bought it for). But all in all I'm very pleased, and while decent wifi radios will probably be available below $100 before the year is out,I'm glad I didn't wait.

Grace Digital Wireless Internet Radio featuring Pandora and NPR (GDI-IR2000) Review

Grace Digital Wireless Internet Radio featuring Pandora and NPR
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
UPDATE: I was so happy with my first IR2000 I purchaced another one for home.

This is a great radio. I've owned it for nearly a week now and it's worked flawlessly. I was looking for a radio for my desk at work and I couldn't have made a better choice. Over the past few weeks I read every review I could find about every internet radio on the market. I finally decided on this one. I really love it. The sound is great but don't expect to be using it on full volume to cover your entire house. Here is my list of likes and dislikes and I hope it helps.
Like's:
-The size was perfect for my desk
-It looks very stylish
-I fired up the radio and had it working within minutes without reading the manual
-It was very easy to register at [...] and automatically download my radio stations and streams.
-I added some personal streams and they appeared on the screen of the radio within minutes.
-It was very easy to browse stations around the world without the use of my [...] account.
-The Audio sounded really good. Especially for the size of the radio
-WIFI setup was very simple. I moved it from one network to another and it remembered both password keys (WEP & WPA)
-The signal strength was really good especially with an internal antenna
-Navigation on the screen was very simple.
-When available it scrolled song or audio information across the screen. E.g. I tuned into aircraft traffic control after I added it to own streams after finding in on a website and within minutes weather information was scrolling across the screen.
-The remote is simple to use
-External input for an MP3 player, etc is a great addition
-It can stream audio from just about anywhere.....Radio Station Streams, Pandora, Sirius, Your PC, any MP3/REAL Audio/WMA stream off the net....

Dislike's:
-The headphone jack is on the back. I use my headphone a lot and it's a pain having to pull the radio forward each time I want to plug them in. The Aux (External) input should be on the back and the headphone input should be on the front.
-Although it's good that the radio is light, it tends to slide a little when I press the select button at times.
-I looked at the manual after I got everything working and it's laid out OK. They could lay it out just a little better.

Conclusion.

The radio is well worth the money. It's very easy to use and setup. The sound is great. The menus are easy to use. It's built well. In all it's a fantastic radio. If I were purchase another radio for my desk, beside my bed or on a table in the lounge room, I would buy another one of these for sure. In fact, I'm thinking about it right now. I give this one 5/5.

Logitech Squeezebox Radio Music Player with Color Screen (Red) Review

Logitech Squeezebox Radio Music Player with Color Screen
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a long time owner of Squeezebox products and was pretty excited to find out about the little table top Squeezebox Radio model.I picked one up and thought I would share my thoughts.

The first thing you notice is how much heft this little player has.It is really well built and the fit and finish is superb. It has plenty of weight and solid rubber feet so that it won't skid around on your night stand or table top.The screen looks great and all of the buttons have a nice solid tactile feel.Compared to many other cheap wireless network streaming radios, this device feels an entire order of magnitude better in its construction quality. The only disappointment here is the lack of back lit buttons, for using the radio in low lighting. It's also worth noting that the entire radio has a high gloss finish that will be a magnet for fingerprints.Looks great though!

The biggest challenge for most consumers with this device will be the initial set up.You need to create an account at [...] in order to set up your new Squeezebox Radio. The device uses this connection to play free internet music services as well as download software updates, etc, to the Radio.I already had a Squeezebox account so this was not a huge challenge for me, but it might be for some people who might be confused that they need to set up an account before they can use the device. There is an option to set up the account from the device itself.Don't do this (it is slow and tedious)!Go to the website and set it up in a few seconds and then just type your login and password on the device.

Other than the laborious task of entering my full email and password for [...] the rest of the setup is very easy. The Squeezebox Radio supports push to connect wi-fi set up which is common on many newer model wireless routers. It's similar to programming a garage door opener.Simply point the Squeezebox Radio at your wireless network and for 120 seconds it will try to connect with the push to connect functionality. Then just push the connect button on your router and it's automagically all set up.

Once set up the Radio will update its firmware and reboot, a process that takes a few extra minutes. After that you are good to go.

In addition to the many built in free online services, you can also play your own music through the Squeezebox Server application.I run the Squeezebox Server application on my HP EX495 Windows Home Server but you can also run Squeezebox Server on any Mac, Windows PC or even Linux box (there are even installable distributions for many Network Attached Storage units). This allows the Squeezebox Radio (and any other Squeeze players) to access all of the music on my home network. It's absolutely wonderful to be able to take the little table top radio anywhere in the home and listen to your entire music collection.

Sound quality is very good, easily enough to fill a small to medium sized room.It gets quite loud with little to no distortion and the controls are easy to use to change tracks, change volume, etc.Wireless strength is superb.I get a full signal anywhere within about 40 feet of my router, and the radio works anywhere on my suburban property with no audio hiccups or dropouts.

In addition to the intuitive controls such as "home", "play", "stop", "back", etc, the unit also features six programmable "preset" buttons similar to what you have on a car radio.Setting these up is a bit more of a challenge than you would expect. You are supposed to be able to hold these down on any song, album, playlist, etc, that is being displayed in the radio menu and have it added as a preset.Unfortunately some items don't add correctly and must first be programmed as a "favorite".It turns out that you can only add favorites for some items (such as playlists) from the Squeezebox Server web based menu, which is quite inconvenient.I don't doubt that Slim Devices (the arm of Logitech that makes these devices) will fix this soon enough.

Other minor glitches include some weird alarm behavior (it will show the time of the alarm when it is going off but strangely won't show the current time, which is annoying if you have hit the snooze button a few times and need to know what time it is), some auto dimming issues (the auto dimming works great but gets almost TOO dim in a dark room to see the radio) and a few other very minor nits.

Slim Devices have a long history of enhancement and improvement of device firmware, so I would expect a lot of these issues to be worked out in the coming months.Additionally there will soon be a battery pack and small infrared remote for the Squeezebox Radio available as a $[...] add on purchase.Personally I think at $[...] the Radio should include these items, but considering the great sound of the radio, the high quality screen and the superb fit and finish it is justified that this device costs as much as it does.

Also worth noting is that if you have an iPod Touch or iPhone you can get the iPeng application $[...] from the Apple App Store which makes controlling and programming your Squeezebox Radio an absolute breeze.iPeng is really a must have if you have these devices and want a wonderful pocket control that works from anywhere in your home.Beats the pants off of what Sonus has to offer!

//Update 1 (Nov 2nd 2009)

Yesterday my SB Radio lost all of the preset buttons which is most annoying. It also turns out that many of the requests for fixes around the alarms functionality have not been addressed and don't appear to be scheduled to be addressed in the next release or two of the software. If your primary use will be a night stand alarm clock I would recommend holding off for now until Logitech addresses alarm functionality issues. If the issues are not resolved I will reconsider my four star rating as it should then be a three star product.

//Update 2 (May 13 2010)

Logitech has not only not fixed many of the initial annoyances with the SB Radio, but newer firmware has in fact made the product less stable and reliable. It still does an admirable job of playing your local music library if you run the SB Server on a PC or Mac in your home, but the network streaming functionality seems to be having issues and I've found the alarm to be terribly unreliable.I would now under the current circumstances rate this only 3 out of 5 stars. It's really a shame too, as the "Slim Devices" that originally brought us these problems was very open and communicative about issues and what was being done to fix them.Logitech has little interest in relaying useful information to its beta testers, err, customers and instead gives us the run around with if and when issues will ever be remedied.

I just got this radio a few days ago.It was pretty easy to set up and use.I have wifi in my house so I am using it wireless. The sound from this little radio with a metal covered speaker is surprisingly good for music. It can be hooked up to my stereo, but I haven't tried that yet.It also has an FM clock radio with a fold out antennae on the back.

The directions explain how to get a code for the radio. Then you enter that code in a specific website on your computer and choose stations. You can group them any way you like. When you tune the radio to Favorites, your selections are there. Automatic sync. If you want to listen to a station that is not on that website, you can add it by entering the URL.There are four buttons for pre-sets.For Favorites, which I've organized by genre, you turn the main knob and press the center of the knob for each menu. There are ways to search for stations on the radio itself as well.

I wanted an internet radio because I missed certain stations that I moved away from. Now I have those and reggae from Jamaica, talk from Seattle, and I am finding new stations all the time.

Aluratek AIRMM01 Internet Radio Alarm Clock with built-in WiFi (Black) Review

Aluratek AIRMM01 Internet Radio Alarm Clock with built-in WiFi
Average Reviews:

Think about the humble clock-radio.Everybody has one. They've scarcely changed in the last two decades. They have poor sound quality. Are usually in a bedroom where radio reception can be poor--and are usually given only a crummy wire antenna sticking out the back. With some, you can play a CD, just as CDs are being superseded by other digital music. Few can access the wealth of programming on satellite. Not a twenty-first century device.

This device brings the clock-radio into the 21st Century. It connects to your Wi-fi at home, and delivers almost any radio station you want from around the world.

NPR junkies can choose from a brace of stations, and the worldwide selection is superb--let me recommend Radio National and Directions in Groove from Australia, KQED and WNYC (the AM version; you'll get AM radio in hi-fi!), Deutsche Welle in English, Radio Netherlands, and of course, the BBC.Living in a non-English-speaking country, it's a real life-line for me.

It solves an issue that has vexed me with conventional clock radios I've owned.Reception problems. With an internet radio, the signal is as strong as your home wi-fi.

No need for an integrated CD.You can play music wirelessly from your computer or a USB stick.

And for a small speaker, the sound is remarkably good. You can plug it into your hi-fi if you wish, for even better sound.

It gets five stars, but not without a couple of glitches. The radio updates the station list automatically, but if a station changes its website in between software updates, you might miss out for a while. The menus are elaborate and can be a bit complex until you get used to them--and that includes the one you use simply to turn the alarm on.And the backlighted time displays ONLY when the radio is actually on; though I expect that glitch to be fixed in a software update.
