Bose Wave Music System - Graphite Gray Review

Bose Wave Music System - Graphite Gray

Wanting to replace the boombox in my kitchen with something premium, I decided to compare my boiled-down list of tabletop radios- the Cambridge Soundworks 740 and the Bose Wave CD. If you could only have seen the looks my wife gave me as I sat and AB'd them. :)

I was initially impressed by the Wave's good looks... until I took out the 740. It made the Wave look more like a plain-old clock radio. Although the front display on the 740 is more attractive, the Wave was easier to read when standing on angle to the unit. The 740's display of CD Text and FM radio song/station info is a really nice feature. The buttons on the 740 are arranged in a logical order with fairly easy to read function descriptions. The absence of buttons on the Wave is unfortunate. I'd rather not have to rely soley on a remote control as my only means to control the radio. Both remotes are pretty similar, but the Wave's did work a little better at further distances and angles.

The 740 can store more radio stations than the Wave, which I realized when I ran out of buttons trying to program the Wave. Speaking of radio, the 740 required more messing with the antenna to pull in the stations that the Wave was able to pull in without an antenna. The 740 comes with FM and AM antennas. The Wave comes with nada.

The sound quality difference is evident even before adjusting the settings on the 740. The Wave sounded good but the 740 was much better. Turning-on the subwoofer and setting the bass to -3 gave the best sound, IMHO. I was appalled to realize the Wave comes with no treble and bass controls- only a talk-radio feature that acts like a loudness button only when the radio is in use, not the CD.

Unfortunately for the 740 and in-line with many other comments about it, the CD transport failed to take my disc. I was very gentle at first then became more aggressive as I figured I'd have to return it anyhow. Well, when I moved it to another room it magically started working. Maybe it isn't as mechanically reliable as the Wave, but I'm willing to take my chances. This potential issue is the only reason I'm not giving five stars. I haven't noticed the clock losing time yet as other reviewers have noted.

In summary, the 740 is sounds better, has more features, and is more attractive than the Wave. If the Wave was $250 I might have kept it instead, but at $500 this A/B comparison is over and Bose has one more open box to contend with.

Yes, you read that right. But before I get to the review, a confession:

As a life-long audiophile, I have long felt that Bose represented the pinnacle of overpriced hype and underwhelming sound quality. The true genius of Amar Bose, in my opinion, is that he has created a distinctive "Bose sound" that appeals greatly to mass market consumers who don't know any better. Spend some time listening to truly good audio systems, and you'll quickly realize that Bose is a high-priced, superbly marketed joke. And unfortunately, I have to live with Bose mediocrity on a daily basis in the form of a Bose audio system "upgrade" in my Acura MDX. (Which I was forced to take as part of the touring package.) It cranks out 'okay' sound at best, and is no where near as good as "stock" audio systems in some of my previously owned vehicles. The most positive thing I can say is that my Acura Bose system sounds better than the Bose system in my friend's Mercedes.

By now you should be getting the idea that I'm the last person in the world inclined to give a Bose product a compliment, no less a five star review. What happened? Well, I was looking for a compact, one piece music system for my home office. And in the world of audio, I realize there is no such thing as a free lunch--designing such a system requires that sound quality be compromised to various degrees along the way. So I certainly wasn't expecting this unit to sound anything like the $10K Sonus Faber speakers in my main rig. What I wanted was good quality sound that, muscially speaking, got the important things right, with no obvious "wrongs."

With these parameters, I quickly realized that there are not many systems out there worth considering. The Cambridge Soundworks 740 soon became my top contender, but I wasn't really happy with it. Yes, it's got bass to spare, but it's bass that I find to be somewhat out of balance with the overall sound, and there's simply no way to tame it. And so, begrudgingly, I decided to give Bose's "New Wave Music System" a listen--after all, I could return it if I didnt like the sound, which I fully expected to be doing. And yet, nearly a month after it arrived in my home, I'm here to sing its praises.

Simply put, the New Wave Music System sounds better than I ever imagined possible with a unit of this size. It's extremely musical and just sounds "right," (whether it be rock, hip-hop, jazz or classical) with many sonic strengths and no obvious flaws. It will easily fill an average-sized room with music, and there's no sense of strain as you push it to higher volumes. For many if not most consumers, the New Wave may be as much "music system" as you'll ever need. One of the downsides to the audiophile pursuit is that you increasing tend to listen analytically, rather than for enjoyment. With the New Wave system, I've rediscovered the pleasure of just popping in a CD and letting it play. I"ve also found both the AM and FM receivers to be quite good, as well.

I really like the sleek, compact design, though I suspect I'll be cursing the "no buttons" approach the first time I (inevitably) lose the remote. And, being always suspicious of Bose's motives, I suspect this design may have been driven by bean counters who saw a way to reduce manufacturing costs by eliminating all on-case controls.

Is it overpriced? Well, if you're the type of person for whom "good enough" is usually good enough, you may want to look elsewhere. But for a product that I truly enjoy using on a daily basis, this was well worth the price. And compared to the insanity of high-end audio, where a 1 meter interconnect can run 3,000 bucks, $500 is downright reasonable.

Overall, I give the New Wave a "Bravo, Bose!" and I'd encourage any audiophiles looking for a small second system to give this a listen. You can always return it within 30 days, but I'd plan on it being a keeper.

Boston Acoustics Horizon Trio Clock Radio w/ CD Player (Mist) Review

Boston Acoustics Horizon Trio Clock Radio w/ CD Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I already own one Boston Acoustics Clock Radio and decided to purchase another which plays CDs.

Unfortunately, there is a manufacturing glitch by which the audio mutes briefly at the end of each track when playing a CD straight through. This might not be noticeable on CDs where there is some silence between tracks. But on many classical CDs where there is continuity of music between tracks, this results in missing about a second of music at each track change.

This was confirmed by BA (because it always "searches" for the next track) and I found it unacceptable. So I had to return it.

However, if you are not into classical CDs, then this is otherwise an excellent CD/AM/FM clock radio. The sound quality is superb as one would expect from such an expensive item. I did find the snooze bar for the alarm a bit too sensitive, which on two occasions caused it to snooze for 15 minutes instead of 10.

Bose Wave Radio II - Graphite Gray Review

Bose Wave Radio II - Graphite Gray
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Bose Wave Radio II is easy to use, has top-of-the-line speakers and has a high-quality build. I use mine as a TV stereo speaker. The auxiliary input works for that function and what I like is that it doesn't take up a lot of space next to the TV. Indeed, incredible sound for the size of the speakers. So why only four stars, not five? Because the Bose, for all the money it costs, is not a top radio performer. It has only average AM reception with its internal ferrite antenna and worse its FM relies on the power cord for what is truly a lame "antenna." So as a speaker, the Bose is great but as a radio it is well below par. For hooking up to your TV, the Bose is outstanding. But as a bedside radio? No way. You would be better off buying a 159-dollar Sangean WR-2, a 259-dollar Sangean HDR-1, a 159-dollar Eton Sound 100 (my favorite for its retro look) or a 159-dollar Tivoli Songbook for your bedside. But if you're integrating the Bose into your TV home entertainment system and you don't mind spending the money and you're not fastidious about your FM reception, then you will enjoy the Bose.

Product Description:
The Wave radio II delivers deeper tones and crisper, more accurate audio performance than the original. The key to the improved sound is the new dual tapered waveguide technology, exclusively from Bose. Engineers re-sculpted the interior of the Wave radio II to accommodate not one, but two 26" folded waveguides. These dual waveguides amplify the low-frequency output, reproducing musical notes a full one-half octave lower than the original Wave radio. The result: Instruments like kettle drums and bass guitars have a more natural presence. With such accurate sound reproduction, you can appreciate more of the intricate nuances of many instruments, including the human voice. You may even hear details in music that you've never heard before. There's also a new equalization feature for talk radio. It automatically compensates for the artificially boosted low frequencies found in some talk radio programs so announcers sound more natural. The Wave radio II is simple to use. Instead of buttons on the unit, everything is conveniently controlled with a well-organized credit card-sized remote. And setup is easy too. The digital FM/AM tuner, amplifiers and speakers are all built into the unit. Just unpack it and plug it in to enjoy Bose quality sound. The display panel is large and bright, with big, bold text that's easier to read from across the room. It displays more information now too. Radio station, current time and alarm setting are all shown simultaneously. You can also use your Wave radio II to enjoy lifelike sound with your TV, VCR, DVD player or computer, thanks to the auxiliary input jack. Or plug your headphones into the convenient headphone jack for private listening. You can even place the Wave radio II near your TV or computer monitor because the speakers are magnetically shielded to avoid interference with the picture image.SPECIAL OFFER: Receive a free premium backlit remote when you purchase by 3/31/09.

Cambridge Soundworks Radio I765 Blk with A/v Entertainment Review

Cambridge Soundworks Radio I765 Blk with A/v Entertainment
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I compared various radio/CD/iPod dock products based on features, price and customer reviews and decided to try Cambridge Soundworks and compare to Bose Wave radio/CD. Originally, I looked at CD 745i, but they had special for i765 so decided to give it a try. I have put i765 next to new Bose Wave radio/CD and listened to various music, CDs and radio stations. Here is brief summary of winning device by category:

Features: CS i765 - has integrated iPod dock, can play DVDS, can adjust bass, treble, etc.

Sound: Bose Wave radio/CD- its sound is clearer, sounds closer to real performance, has less unwanted interference/resonance

CD: Bose - better sounds almost across the board - more natural and crisp sound across musical genres - jazz, pop, classical, perhaps for some hard rock fans, CS could sound better

Radio: Bose - better reception, out of the box and with antennas

iPod: CS i765 - iPod dock integrated and included.
In summary, both of these are solid performers, with Bose having better sound, but Cambridge Soundworks more features and almost half the price.I have not yet decided which one I will return.

I hope that CS improves the sound more and that Bose starts to offer integrated iPod dock at more competitive pricing - after all there are number of other players now in the market: Denon, Polk, Boston Acoustics, Onkyo, etc.

I had been searching for this product for awhile.I own a Cambridge Soundworks 88 and it is still my favorite radio. Now that I own an iPod, this seemed like the perfect fit.It was !For the price, I believe this is the best iPod/AM/FM/Clock Radio system out there.Functionality is easy. The sound coming from this small but solid unit is what won me over. The X-Fi Crystallizer [whatever that means?] works, you will leave it on.The Surround function is questionable [leave it off].
Remote is great - and big !Bottom Line, great sound [a la Cambridge], great functionality, Great Value!
