(More customer reviews)When I initially got this item I was ready to send it back. The gradual volume increase and the back light I thought were going to be big issues for me. BUT...! But then I test drove it for a week just to see how it would go. The result - the ultimate in effectiveness: it wakes me up. It works. It does what an alarm clock is supposed to do. I'm afraid I must keep it.

What I initially thought were cons but decided otherwise:
* The back light. I really wanted to be able to look up from bed and see the time. Why now I'm not sure - in the middle of the night is it really important to watch the clock? In the evening, I don't need to worry about the time - I need to go back to sleep. So the back light and ability to turn it off are consequently a PLUS for focusing on sleep.

* The gradual volume increase. Contrary to what has been posted, it is not 3 seconds to max volume. It's 3 seconds before it goes up to the next level. So actually you have about 45 seconds or so before it gets uncomfortably loud. It wakes up the person who has a hard time waking up.

So all in all
* the sound quality = awesome,
* waking up to my favorites songs is a TREAT and a great way to start they day,
* display, clear and includes the date,
* backlight can be turned completely off so you're not obsessing about the time,
* effective gradual increase in volume,
* doesn't take up a lot of space,
* the height of the time display is a plus for me.

I hate to admit it but this clock works. It's not the sound of the ocean or waterfalls playing for 30 minutes, it's an alarm clock designed to wake you up.
